If you ask me, just skip the anime and show him the manga directly. I don't really get the point of showing something worse first in order for him to be interested.

If you have to, show him from the first episode.

Can someone help me remember an anime? I only remember VERY vague details. The main character was a kid and had to battle other robots using his own robot, he had a toy of the robot which he pointed at the TV or something to control the robot. I think a recurring villain was a shark mech.
