While the Movies are more serious with waaaay better atmosphere and music, the series is the embodiment of late 80s/early 90s try hard comic anime. On top of half the jokes not even being funny the series is over all kind of badly written. Not terribly unwatchble, but it's not anywhere near as good as the OVAs. That's what i meant by meh. Unless you like corny as fuck early 90s anime in which case it's generic to decent.
