I hate the use of the word "porn" for things other than sex pics/vids now. It's such a lame ass Reddit thing. Earth porn, sound porn, science porn, whatever the fuck. I get what it's going for but it's fuckin stupid. As the contacts disconnected, the voltage between them was still huge enough to create a channel of ionized air so the charge could continue to flow - that's the arc you're seeing. Anon's talking about the smoke from the building moving not the camera. Many witnesses say a coordinated explosion went off in the lobby of the north tower as the south tower was hit. I've often wondered if this video is proof of that or if the shock wave of the south tower was powerful enough to effect the smoke of the north tower. Who knows?

>>1860722
Because the object (aircraft) is moving faster than the speed of sound in a given medium (air). The speed of sound is the speed at which compression waves travel through a medium. In a standard atmosphere at sea level (1013.6 mb/ 29.92 in Hg and 15°C/59°F) the speed is approximately 340 m/s or 761 mph, varying with temperature.
Pic related; this aircraft is travelling faster than the speed of sound at sea level, or >661 knots. The compression wave distorts to a cone shape at speeds >Mach 1.0, and behind the high-pressure bow wave is an area of low pressure, where the vapor cone sometimes becomes visible. The noise of the aircraft is delayed because the compression wave ("noise" or "sound") follows at an oblique angle, just like the wake from a boat does not reach an observer the moment it passes by; only with aircraft it is 3-dimentional cone rather than a chevron-shaped wake

This is what commercial SONAR sounds like underwater from a swimmer's perspective.
SONAR stands for Sound Navigation and Ranging, which uses generated compression waves and subsequent echos to identify and map it's surrounding. It uses a powerful speaker to beam out a signal at a given frequency, and a sensitive microphone to pick up echoes between pulses. The time in which it takes for the pulse to return defines the distance from the microphone. A composite image is formed by plotting the returns with respect to distance in a specific dimensional plane, and thus the seabed or column of water below the ship can be mapped for objects on the sea floor or fish in a specific area and at what depth.
Pic related is an example of a chirp, or a continuously varying frequency. A basic SONAR can broadcast in a single frequency, but as water density changes the return is distorted, thus ruining the generated image. To more accurately scan the area, a chirp can be used to compensate for this density as some frequencies are less susceptible to distortion. It broadcasts one signal, listens, and plots the return for that frequency, then the next pulse uses a different frequency (typically higher), and the process continues through the frequency range, typically ~150kHz-220kHz or so.
Kinda spooky, really.
>>1864162
1. Neat
2. What's making the sonar near a group of tourist divers
3. Is it as loud as the video or louder?
>>1864182
Seawater is about 800 times more dense than air, so the transmitted compression waves (sound) travels much more efficiently, and therefore further. The ship does not have to be right next to the swimmers to be clearly audible. The equipment could be more than a mile away.
The actual audio would be louder, as reinforcing/waterproofing materials act as audio insulators, muffling the sound. This is commercial SONAR equipment; active SONAR on a military submarine is extremely dangerous as the broadcast is very loud. If a listener were within a mile or so it would cause physiological damage. Most time they use broadband passive SONAR, but they are equipped and occasionally use active SONAR.
Anyone have the banshee's wail it was like something on fire. sounded super fucking spooky.

May I ask how you know this information? How can humans hear sound waves with a frequency in the range of 150-200 kHz when the maximum frequency humans can hear is 20 kHz? Also why would a ship use its sonar equipment so close to divers, that's much too dangerous. If it where a fishing vessel using the sonar close by looking for fish the frequency needed to find fish would be even higher because fish don't reflect sound really well.
I'm also sceptical that you can hear the sonar equipment from a mile away. That seems pretty stupid considering the only way you want to look with commercial sonar is down (assuming you are using the sonar for surveying or fishing purposes).
>>1856685
>Fucking genius
Most models couldn't actually turn them off, so level flight was accompanied by a constant screaming noise, hellish for the crew
>>1833798
That could have been a lot worse than what most people realize. I work on the base and I remember them doing the cleanup. There were several very large pieces of shrapnel near the hydrazine and oxygen fueling tanks. If it pierced even one of them there would have been nothing left of the Island.
The explosion even busted windows in Chincoteague, which is a few miles away.
>>1870118
The source I was referencing for the chirp information was describing a 130-210 kHz frequency range, but that isn't necessarily the standard. Long wave sonar can be 1-5 kHz and medium would be in the 5-15 kHz range, so the 150-200 kHz is on the high end. Different frequencies will yield different resolutions at different distances, but many are well within the range of human hearing.
At 235 decibels it can be quite damaging, even at a distance. Granted, that is probably a high statistic, but it does the submarine no good to only detect objects 200m out. They will use long wave sonar that can travel quite a long distance (3:14 from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMe7TovEneA)
https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/does-military-sonar-kill/
The instrument may broadcast a signal in one direction (typically straight down) but just like any other noise it can bounce off surfaces and echo.

the plane has broken the sound barrier, so it's essentially flying in front of it's own sound relative to a stationary point. The sound hasn't caught up to it yet.
>>1871184
That's a hybrid fuel rocket that burns paraffin and N2O, so there's no turbopumps. The N2O is just pressurized and released through channel(s) in the solid paraffin.
I believe the sound is the nitrous oxide rushing through the combustion channel(s) in the solid fuel. For a brief second you see the oxidizer exit the engine in a puff of gas, just before the igniter is triggered.
