I'm living the dream now; it's too bad you can set Ctrl+# to switch to the corresponding tab like in Chrome.

I didn't follow any guides but I can tell you what I'm currently using.

The bar at the top is a custom version of the Übersicht nerdbar.widget, using kwm to determine the active screen/space (a little buggy)

This is the iTerm2 fork I'm using.

For screenshots/recording/uploading/converting to webm I use a couple of bash scripts I wrote and for the notifications I'm using growl/growlnotify.

For the occasional tiling I use applescripts bound to my numpad using quicksilver.

I've been using awesomewm but would like to try something new. I've tried i3 but it didn't feel as extensible as I would like it to be. However, I do like the layout modes. Would have liked to see some default layouts I could switch between for when I don't need manual tiling.
