Post your vector requests and recently done vectors here.
>Previous thread → >>1859371

READ THE OP BEFORE POSTING!

>Before requesting, here are some tips:
– Request an image ONCE per thread. Do not bump or second - once is enough.
– Check the lists below to see if your request has already been previously fulfilled.
– All requests are welcome, within reason, but remember:
– The poorer the quality of an image (in resolution and drawing ability), the less likely it will be picked up. The more detail seen and higher the resolution, the better.
– Full-body images preferred. Images cut off on 3 or more sides are very unlikely to be picked up due to their limited usage; keep this in mind when finding an image to request. (Hair or skirt edges that are barely cut off don't usually count)
– Requests for removing the background from an image (called a RENDER) and resizing requests should go to the IMT threads.
– Refrain from using renders for requests. Try to find the original non-rendered image; it is easier for vectorists to work with.
– Note: Overly complicated images are unlikely to be picked up due to their nature. IF your request is taken, please have patience.

Asking those with experience:

1) Where do you start with the lines? Do you make the hair first? Do you go from the foreground to the background?
2) Is there a trick to maintain the same width on the lines? I usually use the drawing method from the tutorial, but I find it kinda wasteful since if I make a little adjustement, I might end up having to adjust everything again. Should I just put up with that? Does Inkscape have a function that would help?
3) How diligent are you with nodes? In which cases would you use a lot and where would you use a couple (like in the tutorial's hair lines)?

If you really want to go all out on helping me, could you describe how would you deal with a project like this >>1866454
Nothing too fancy, just how would you plan it were you to do it.

And before anyone makes claims, here's the attempt--that was eventually dropped--from a year ago
>>
>>1866495

1) I always start from hair and work down, but that is just me. It doesn't matter.

2) Practice. Making fills is a skill you need to learn, and that takes numerous vectors to get right. Don't cheat and use strokes, unless you're working on something mechanical. You pick a thickness you like for hair, skin, clothing, etc. and match it for that given area. You then simply look at the lines and make sure they match throughout each given area. Fix it if they don't. Note this takes a lot of time, so if you find it wasteful to make adjustments, this isn't for you. If there is no complex coloring, lineart will always be the most time consuming process for that very reason.

3) Always minimize nodes. Some areas will require more nodes, such as long hair, or fingers, but the ultimate goal in each area is to use the least amount of nodes possible. Always make sure all nodes and handles are parallel at all times as well.

Also start with a simpler anime screenshot image, and practice off of those for the first 5-6 vectors, before moving on to more fanart. Refer to this post for some examples and an .ai file to see nodes and handles: >>1864354. It should open fine in Inkscape.
>>
>>1866495
>1) Where do you start with the lines? Do you make the hair first? Do you go from the foreground to the background?
There is no "good way" to start, I tend to just go top to bottom on lines and then top to bottom with color.

>2) Is there a trick to maintain the same width on the lines? I usually use the drawing method from the tutorial, but I find it kinda wasteful since if I make a little adjustement, I might end up having to adjust everything again. Should I just put up with that? Does Inkscape have a function that would help?
you just have to get used to it, after a while it isn't as big a deal as you make it out to be now, I know, I have been in your place frustrated with lines too.
>3) How diligent are you with nodes? In which cases would you use a lot and where would you use a couple (like in the tutorial's hair lines)?
Only as needed. Sometimes I will make a long stretch and then add nodes until I get the curves I want. That is how I keep my sanity with logs lines like hair (fuck long hair).

>If you really want to go all out on helping me, could you describe how would you deal with a project like this
start with the bangs and then the hat, it keeps you from having to adjust endpoints constantly.
I would finish the hair but you may want to do the arm first. Either way, draw the lines through the arm and then cut the lines off, it gives you smooth lines. Just continue down, you could even do closest shaped first then farther one after, it can help as well.
>>
>>1866495
Because I am a lot different (read: insane) than everyone else, I'll add my answer, as well.

I'm not answering in a 1-3 categorization, because for me, each vector is different, depending on my needs for fulfillment.

For example: I usually will work in a top-to-bottom for the lines, and then bottom-to-top for the colors.

Generally.

Depending on the complexity, like with roses and hilights, etc. I will also work in a "front-to-back" method, depending on my layers, and what lines and colors need to supersede.

I recommend that, before you even THINK about setting any lines, just look at the objects made by the lines, to find out which thing best suits your needs for thicknesses, colors and objects overlapping one another.

Finally, the best "trick" I can find for line consistency is the mouse thickness and zoom levels. If you make a hair line at "X" thickness (the mouse pointer) and "Y" zoom, you know the exact thickness each time. After a while, you'll be able to start eyeballing them like a champ.
Hope this helps...

I have a good idea how to make them, it's just that the software I normally use doesn't have all the functionality to do them right. I can do simple gradients fine, but for shaped ones I'd need to rasterize something, since I can't make vector masks or vector blurs with it.

As an example, I did some gradient stuff for the background objects of this Scanty & Kneesocks scene you might recognize. These ones here are all vector data.

What exactly would going a whole thread without the request achieve? do you think you are being generous? if you are willing to do the vector just do it instead of spouting nonsense that helps no one and wastes.

I dunno, teach you some patience?

>>1866495
Personally i tend split up the image in layers that are on top of each other (more or less) and then do the lineart for any of them completely before moving on to the next, usually from simple to more complicated, although that depends on my mood.
Take >>1866091 for example: on the lowest layer are the wings, then comes a body layer, one layer for the foreground (the bed or whatever that is), another body layer for the right arm and leg that go in front of some of the stuff on the first bed layer, a layer for the hair and another bed layer for the stuff in front of the right arm. In this case i started with the body, then did the hair, the bed and lastly the wings, although they're arguably not the most complicated part of the image.
As for keeping line thickness stable, for this image i used strokes first ( see >>1864696) and added fills around them later.
The result isn't completely uniform, but i'm out of practice. I used to do that without strokes as help.

As already said, use as few nodes as possible. If a line gets a little smoother as a result so be it, unless it looks out of place now.
>>

>I dunno, teach you some patience?
This isn't how these threads work. He can refresh his request as many times as he wants, as long as it's once per thread. If anything, he's been anything but impatient by requesting this image over and over for almost a year, if not more.

Hey,
I just wanted to kindly request this picture.
Ok, two on one, but for my use it would be needed:

I want to print a dakimakura cover of her. Since I haven't found this cover on my favourite shop, I searched google for some, but only found it in shops I don't really trust.
So, it would be very nice if someone here could do this,

Regards

What's the deal with strokes? Why do you consider it cheating? Is there a technical reason why it shouldn't be used? I mean, tools are tools, if they make your job easier, aren't they preferable?

That might not be how you do things, but just like the requester is free to ask, so is the person who chooses to vector it. If he wants to set a rule before he does it, what's the problem? It's between him and the requester.

>What's the deal with strokes? Why do you consider it cheating? Is there a technical reason why it shouldn't be used? I mean, tools are tools, if they make your job easier, aren't they preferable?

Because of the finished product.

As I have said time and time again: Strokes-only don't always translate an image to good vectors.

Look at the differences between the rei guy's fill versus vectors, then expand the images a few times, and you'll see the blunt ends not only look like ass, but the uniformity of them makes the image go into "uncanny valley" range, because they don't look organic/imperfect.

Yes, they are tools and I will say it again: You don't use a fucking screwdriver to do what a hammer or wrench does.

Sure, it's up to him. That's not what my point was directed at; any requester can re-request for as long as they have the patience for it. I don't see why there should be any issue with that or even how that would mean someone is being impatient.
>>
>>1866694
If you don't use a tablet regularly already, it will just hinder you.

For people who do digital art all the time anyways, it's quicker and more convenient, but it's a huge learning curve.

I need this logo vectorized (i.e. not pixelated) for a school project and I remembered they had vector threads here on /w/.

As long as it's transparent and has clean lines, I really couldn't ask for anything more.

All those "free" sites make you jump though hoops and I'll be the first to admit that I'm illiterate with even the most basic image-editing software.

Something to try:

Since the bracelet is transparent: make the lines for it thinner than the skin, to enhance the transparency. (Don't remove the lines - copy them to 2 new layers (using the copy in place" on each layer, hide the top (thick) ones, then thin out the bottom ones. Switch back-and-forth between them to see which one gives the best affect. (yes affect - this is aesthetics and not the actual effects to get the affect.. you know what I am saying...)

Try dark green colored lines on tht bracelet If those are still 100% opacity and the inner green color is transparent llike you have it, it should be fine. The divider on her left sleeve and shirt should have thinner lines I think. You have thinner lines on every other inner part of the shirt.

That's not how the word works. I mean, I get what you are trying to say, but "affect" is a verb and "effect" is a noun. Effect is correct in that case, even if the word has connotations that doesn't exactly match what you normally apply it to in terms of graphics. Following your method, you are effectively "affecting" the effect.

Finally being on the computer and not my phone, I can actually get a closer look at it. It looked like strokes from afar, but you did actually use fills. Howeber, don't use rounded or flat edges for any of the pieces of lineart that should end on single tip nodes, like the tips of the hair, tips of the breast lines, and tips of the clothing. If you make them rounded or flat, you make them look like strokes, which is why I was lead to believe they were when looking from afar. Use sharp edges with independent handles instead.

Something like this. You only end shapes that go into other ones as two nodes and flat. The other shapes that taper off at the corners, should be done with a single node instead.

I would go a bit larger on the hair lines so they show up.

Her bangs go over her eyes, including all of the black spots.put the hair over the eyes, use the divide tool to split the partially-hidden spots from visible ones and then mess with colors until it looks right. Tip: Divide is in the pathfinder tools.
>>
>>1868149
If you look closer, he did actually use fills. You can see a lot of line inconsistencies on closer inspection. He did the worst case scenario where he rounded all of the corners and made it look like strokes, so he wasted a lot of extra time making the fills look worse. He probably also left the stroke on on a few of the fills.
>>
>>1868227
>If you look closer, he did actually use fills.
I see it now, and agree. Still: Strokes and the stroke method DOES NOT Translate well in vectors - even if it looks like the pens used in cells...

No I don't mean the lines, I mean the shine/blush thing it's got going on; the line is too sharp between it and the shadow on her leg, and the shape feels a bit off too, maybe too perfectly round? Harder to say.

Colors mostly done. I added some shading at the leg and stomach and changed the color of what i suppose is part of the bed in front of her right leg at the right border of the image, otherwise i tried to stay close to the original image.

The wings are partially transparent.
The halo only really works with a dark background.

Does anyone see any problems with the colors so far?

>It's crazy how good you guys are at finding the little flaws.

Let's find more then.

The little design on the shoe should be going under the lineart, like the one above it. The line below that on the sole of the shoe has too many nodes. You're missing a shadow on the white part of the backpack. You're missing a shadow on the pink part of the backpack above that. You're missing some lineart and a shadow of the backpack to the left of the leg. You have a blue speck on the backpack under the leg. You're missing the blush on the knee. You should connect the hand lineart, considering you connected the leg and many of the clothes already. You're missing the blush on the arm, and a shadow on the background just to the left of that. The shadow on the skirt should be connecting to the lineart. The ribbon should be drawn such that the knot is drawn as its own shape, that the other shapes go into. The shadow on the background to the left of the face has an error that shouldn't be there. The white highlight on the face does not go past the lineart for the eyelashes. You also have shadows color peeking under the eye lineart of both eyes, and the shadow on the right should cover the skin color above the eyelash. The white of the left eye ends abruptly at the bottom and should go into the lineart. The highlight over the nose should connect to the nose and curve more. The highlight under the mouth should also curve more to the shape of the mouth. The mouth lines should curve more at the tips. Keep the handles farther from the center so you can control the tips better. The circular shape in the headband is too rough due to the amount of nodes. Minimize nodes and use the handles more to help keep the circular shape smooth.

Also, just in case you're using Illustrator, make sure Type Optimized (Hinted) is chosen for the aliasing.

Trying to vector this as a second (did one in photoshop before, but lazily), but I want to ask something - in Daul's tutorial he's doing black hair too, but he's doing the shading as part of the outline. Darken up the wings add some blue or black to the red. OR make them a very light pink almost white.

It's just your language in your browser - should be able to change it form british to english.

(to be honest: I wish it would check both and ONLY alter it if you go out-of-sequence to the rest [examples: flavor, favor, colour - then it triggers] but I digress.)

You are NOT doing something wrong. Looks good so far.

That being said: I DO have some suggestions to make it look a bit better:

* For the hair ends: While you CAN have them as they are, try playing with "V" shapes to give it different depth. IF you are unsure of what I mean, I or someone else can post an example for you (Think of the Asuka bangs from a month past, if you have been lurking that long...)
* The red line in the image (ignore it says "fixme" name - that's my "go-to name so I don't have a bajillion rogue fix images laying about) - the red line shows how you could bend the lines and still retain the shaping of the hair to be more in line with the one like it on the other side. It also make sit look less like a "puff" in her hair.

Hope this helps...
>>
>>1869125
Looks alright.

Thin the single node tips of the hair more. You want the transition to be thin at the start, thicker towards the V tip, and either thinning out again at another single node tip, or a two node shape that maintains thickness into another object. For the big round line for the back of the head, check where your nodes are placed. You can see the distance between the two nodes does not match the thickness of the handles between the next pair of nodes. Either increase the distance between the nodes, or extend the handles of both pairs of nodes to make the thickness in between match. Make sure all nodes and handles are parallel at all times.

I have a question for you guys that know the roots of CC better than I - where does it keep all the settings for things such as the selection, toobars, atc. you customize? I just got the replacement for my dead machine set up, but sadly, I did not remmember where the settings were to coy. I can still get them form my laptop, but I fogot where they are.

also: my GTX 550TI was another loss with my mobo and CPU. I have a GT 730 now, but it's not as good of a card. 8( I wish I had friends that hoarded pieces so I could get a replacement that wasn't twice what I paid for the original card.

Not bad. Here are some tips.

Keep the eyebrows consistent with the thickness of the other eyebrows you made farther above. Do not make the eyes with a single fill. Create the eyes with the circle tool, and create a shape for the eye lineart. Some anime has it where the entire eye is black, and thus it doesn't matter, but a significant amount of art has a lineart border around the coloring. This will help keep the circular shape, and you can fill and hide the coloring under it. For the face line, add indents before and after the chin. This is a characteristic of anime art, and is done so in pretty much all anime art, or at least the many that I have done. You can see it in the original. The nose is drawn incorrectly. The nose can't possibly be facing either left or right, due to the camera being straight on the character. The angle must be much closer to the center, either as a circle, or some kind of teardrop shape. Use the circle tool for the circular balls in the hair. Then, use a clipping mask to clip out the areas that shouldn't be shown under the ear. The mole on her neck should again be closer to the center, due to the camera (check the original).

The rest of the issues are due to thickness differences. Many areas of the clothing are thicker or thinner than the other. Pick a thickness for each area and make sure it matches through the entire area. The hands are significantly thicker than the rest of the lineart and look out of place. You also need to keep the tips of the fingers rounded instead of blocky, as it gives it a more feminine look. KyoAni makes pretty garbage hands though, so you will learn how to do it better with better fanart. Also, don't be afraid to give the small two single tip folds changes in direction, as it makes it more interesting. Anything else not mentioned is kinks in lineart, so make sure the handles and nodes are parallel.

I said a lot, but you're doing better than most first timers. Keep it up.
>>
>>1869240
Woah thanks.
For the mole, I just put it where the original picture had it.
Dunno why I didn't think of using the circle tool for the mochi ball thing...
And I disagree, I really like kyoani's hands. They're always really cute. But yeah, not great for vectoring probably.
As for the eyes, those two black holes are just placeholders, but thanks for the tip.

I really appreciate the help man, thanks.
>>
>>1869248
>For the mole, I just put it where the original picture had it.
The mole was placed to the left just so you can see it. It should still be placed where you have it. The angle is the more important part. The angle needs to be closer to the center rather than to the left or right, due to the camera.

>And I disagree, I really like kyoani's hands. They're always really cute. But yeah, not great for vectoring probably.
It's nothing really to do with vectoring. They just lack detail and are very simple. The more detailed hands you see in some fanart are actually much harder to vector, but they look nicer, so long as they do the fingernails correctly. You will start to notice the more you do them.

Just two things.

You didn't clip the bottom of the image properly. Unlock whatever layer you had the original image in and click it. With it still selected, go to Object > Artboards > Fit to Selected Art. The artboard should now fit to the original image. You can then go to Document Setup at the top right and click "Edit Artboards" and adjust the artboard to remove any unneeded space at the sides or top, without altering the bottom. Then when you are in the Export window, you can click the "Use Artboards" box before selecting a location to save it. This should properly cut the bottom part out.

The other issue is a smaller one with the blush lines. You want the blush lines to go in a certain direction, which in this case you did. The only thing you want to do is make sure you keep the tips thin, just like how you did for the tips of the hair before. So thin tips, thicker center, to thin tips again. This will give it a more delicate and soft look versus the fatter version. This is a rather extreme example, but it should highlight why it will be important in the future.

Otherwise, it is good enough to continue. Do another 4-5 anime screenshot ones and you should get the hang of it enough to start working on the harder fanart ones.

>9 hours straight
Heh. Soon 9 hours straight might get you just some of the lineart done.

Not bad, but here are some things to consider.

On areas like the face and mouth, you have the curves a little lumpy. Try spreading the handles more to make those areas curve smoother, or removing extra nodes close by, if you have any. Always work with less and add more later, if needed. The hands also have a similar issue. You always want to be working toward less squarish fingertips, in order to give it a more feminine look.

In terms of thickness issues, there are a few. The back of the head is thinner at a couple places. Check the distance between your nodes. The collar area is thicker than the rest of the clothing. Try to match the rest of the clothing to that collar thickness. The hand thickness is much too thin. You need to think about depth when working on an image. If something is closer to the screen, then the thickness should be thicker. It looks out of place when you have thicker lineart farther towards the back of an image, and thinner at the front.

Anything else circled but not mentioned are either bad tips or inconsistency issues.
>>
>>1870104

Looking pretty good. One error I spotted was some disjointed lineart where her right eye and eyelid meets. Otherwise, a few nitpicks, like the section where are face and neck meets, try and make the end point a bit bolder so that the difference doesn't look as jarring. I'd also add the small indent like on her left eye but onto her right. Her left ear's thickness is a bit too wide compared to the one of her face. Also, the way I see it, the strap of her dress at the back should look like it's folded on itself, basically you're missing a line separating the top and bottom of it. Lastly, I'd make the nose as shown in my reference, it generally looks better done as such.

For the goggles' shading, you might want to look into gradient meshes if you didn't already.
>>

Thanks so much for the help. I'll fix everything up and look into gradient meshes when I get up tomorrow. (I don't know much about this stuff since this is my first vector). My bad, I didn't literally mean pure black in that sense. It's just that whenever you start a new project by going to file>new, it'll open the new file with a whole array of preset color swatches. The default colors in there seem to do that weird grey outline for me, I figured it might be the same issue for you. So what I meant is that you should delete to default swatches and add colors that you pick yourself instead. Pic related.

So, what seems to happen is that the "Appearance of Black" setting's replacement to rich black is faulty.
So you're right, deleting the swatch and creating a new one that is naturally #000000 is a good idea.
>>
>>1870575
Rgb is for computer screens, cmyk is for printing. If you plan on printing you use cmyk if not rgb is fine.
>>
>>1870575
>>1870587
RGB also gives you more color ranges in comparison to CMYK. I've done pretty much everything in RGB, with the conversion to CMYK having little to no noticable problems. Generally the only colors that will give you problems in conversion from RGB and CMYK will be very bright ranges of blue or green. Otherwise, you should be fine.
>>
>>1870542
What has already been said, and if you have any layers that line up EXACTLY with another one, this can happen, as well. Put it in "outline mode" and the lines that are bold-looking have overlap. IF you see this, then you might want to move the under-object under the other.

Here are some last few issues.

The iris colors within the eye are very poor and lumpy. Take advantage of using the circle tool. Make the circle shape, and get it as close to the shape of the outer iris as much as possible. Then, make a second shapes, starting outside the circle shape, that draws the internal crescent shape, and make sure the outer parts of that shape go above and around the top part of the circle shape. Then, select both shapes, open your Pathfinder box, and select "Minus Front". This should delete properly and give you a crescent shape with minimal and smooth nodes. You can then add/delete nodes and play with handles if you need to get a little bit closer to the original. Do the other iris color on top of it in a similar fashion. You can turn on Smart Guides (Ctrl+U) if you need help latching a node onto another node, or another shape.

The blush has some banding issues. Make sure you have the outer radial gradient color set to the skin color behind it, and spread the coloring a bit more. This should help hide banding. For the right arm, don't create an odd shape where it bends severely. You want there to be a clear termination for the two arm lines (see original). Instead, make them two separate shapes with one going over the other. For the left shoulder, do not have the arm line going over the collar line. The collar is on top of the clothing, so the two should be switched, with the collar line going over the shirt line. Anything else not mentioned is consistency issues, or lumpy lines.

Use RGB for the most part, as most vectors will be used for wallpapers. It allows for greater color ranges than CMYK. Also, if you right click the image and use "Open With" and select Illustrator, it will open the image as RGB by default, with none of the unneeded swatches and graphic styles.

So you guy posting actual vectors like svg, AI or something? Or just png's?
>>
>>1871314
Generally, just the PNG but most of us won't mind sharing the project file if asked.
>>
>>1871314
It's 4chan - they don't allow uploading the files for those types, so we're stuck with png for show-off purposes, but make the .ai or .svg available upon request.

Requesting, please. Thank you! I apologize for not having a png for whomever to work with.

Is this a feasible image at least? Not too difficult/poor quality?
>>
>>1871374
It can definitely be done. Actually, half tempted to do it quick before finishing an old vector.
>>
>>1870136
not him, but how do you check the distance between nodes for consistent line width? Do you just keep smart guides up all the time?
>>
>>1871469
You just look at it with your eyes. You see if it looks significantly thicker or thinner than the lineart around it. For instance, I knew where the nodes were placed in that image, and I could tell just by looking that the thickness where the nodes were placed were thinner than the space in between the next pair of nodes. Increasing the spacing by moving one of the nodes farther away would increase the thickness where the nodes are, and match the thickness around it. That's all there is to it.

You should never really use Smart Guides unless you want it to help you latch lines or colors onto other lineart or nodes. Otherwise, you should leave it off, since it will keep latching onto things when you don't want it to, and make the experience stuttery instead of smooth.

How viable would it be to vector miku and the sparkles? I assume it would take some creative work to make the lines consistent and replace the missing lines, but I would greatly appreciate it if someone took up the job.
>>
Whoa. I've never thought doing this is THIS hard.

Any tips for a newbie?

Am I really supposed to do an outline for the lines, fill the shapes and hide the outlines? Seems a little tedious.

Also, is 500px-ish okay for making vectors for a profile photo?
>>
>>1871571
Scratch that last question. I forgot I can just zoom in and vectors are just as sharp

Also, can anyone give me general tips for vectoring?
>>
>>1871593
Stop using strokes.
>>
>>1871593
Start over and don't use strokes. Read the OP.

>>1871571
Keep your nodes in pairs and their handles parallel.
>>
>>1871469
>>1871489
Also: as I have said in the past - Use the mouse pointer and zoom levels to check widths. Then stay on that zoom level for the things you want that thickness. Then as you get better, you'll be able to eyeball it a lot better.
>>
>>1871593
>How do you guys have the patience for this?
IT's a way for a lot of us to relax. It's like those people hat can do embroidery, cross-stitch, woodworking. It takes time and patience for a hobby you like, a lot of times.

And again, as everyone else has said: DO NOT USE STROKES. Read the OP, and watch the tutorials for the program you are using. Strokes should only really be used for machined items, else you'll get your image in the "Uncanny Valley" for the mind's perception. Look up that phrase on tvtropes to understand what I mean...
>>
>>1869073
Not the same anon but I'm seconding this.
>>
>>1871604
Nvm just forgot I'm not allowed to second
>>
>>1871593
If strokes are too much for you, you will never make it. Expect to work on easy images anywhere from 4-10 hours. It only continues to go up significantly with harder fanart.

Fairly messy and inconsistent.

Make sure you keep all nodes and handles parallel like >>1871597 said. You also want to start with the minimal amount of nodes. Only place nodes at the endpoints, and any major curves in the middle. Play with the handles and see what they could achieve without having to use another node. The less nodes, the less lumpy the picture will be. Don't stretch the handles too far where they begin to flatten at the nodes. Extend them only to where they keep their shape, and then add another pair of nodes in the middle, if needed.

You also need to pick thicknesses for certain parts of an image. You go all over the place. Pick a thickness for skin, hair, clothing etc. and make sure to match it throughout the entire image.

Here are a couple lines to show you what it should look like.
