Post your vector requests and recently done vectors here.
We are having a vectoring contest! See details here: http://fav.me/d7cbq0z
Previous thread -> >>1663118

PLEASE READ THE OP BEFORE POSTING!.

Before requesting, here are some tips:
-request an image ONCE per thread please, and yes, that includes bumps
-check the list below if your request has been fulfilled before
-removing the background from an image is a RENDER, NOT a vector. There is a separate thread for renders called the Image modification thread (IMT), please take render requests there
-refrain from using a Render for a request and try to find the Original non-rendered image as it is easier for the Vectorist to work on
- nobody will waste time trying to vector trace poor quality images, so try to supply screenshots in decent quality
-note that overly complicated images are unlikely to be picked up by their nature
-do not request images that are "cropped out" on multiple sides, meaning images whose characters do not appear in full. One side cropped is usually fine, two depends; something like minor cropping of the hair on one side is generally ok as well

Check these places before requesting:

I get virtually the same thing as him from just exporting normally, with just a smaller file size than his (841 kb). I did notice that the file size from the previous thread is over 300 kb smaller than mine. I then exported it with Art Optimized (Supersampling) (in the Anti-aliasing section when exporting) and got the same quality and file size as the one you were linking previously.

Are you using that setting for your export? If so, change it to Type Optimized (Hinted) and you should be fine. It even becomes less of an issue at 600 PPI.
>>
>>1666766
yeah you probably don't need to change it to 16bit, I was under the wrong impression that it would help reduce banding but apparently it doesn't work that way.

Here is mine exported at 72dpi type optimized.

>>1666777
I'm a dumb ass.
>>
>>1666769
Yeah, the only things that I know of that help reduce banding is either using more colors in gradients, similar colors, gradient mesh, or using noise filters. Noise filters seem to have the best effect, but unfortunately rasterize an image.

So long as you don't have a TN monitor or a really large simple gradient with 1 or 2 colors, it shouldn't be a problem. Some people notice it more than others though.
>>
>>1666779
I think it's monitor related as well, on my laptop which is still 1920x1200 but has higher ppi since it's 15" they all look fine...
>>
>>1666782
A lot of it is monitor related. I usually work on my 29" 2560x1080 which comes to 109dpi and does not have the
greatest colors. I move the images I work on to my 15" 2880x1800 which is 220dpi and has much better colors,
including black since it is glossy, and decide if there is too much banding there. You would be amazed how much
you can tell just by seeing it on a different screen even on the same computer. I have changed gradients based on
the banding seen on the good resolution monitor. I like monochrome clothing so banding can be a real issue.

>>1667376
Brilliant, John. Now take that, and apply it to a vector that you're going to submit to the contest. I guarantee you'd finish before I do.
>>
>>1667220
it was me but I don't really like that image, you're free to take it.
>>
>>1667382
Find me an image worth doing then. I've already gone through well over 30,000 images to no avail. I don't think I'm really into this category.
>>
>>1667390
John.. your last one Deko okayed while you were on stream. Get with the program - you have already done one worthy of judging for this competition. 8P
>>
>>1667398
I don't waste time putting things in that wouldn't win. It was a simple one that I did for fun and sillyness.
>>
>>1667399
Whether you think it'd win or not, I still think you should enter it. More people will see that vector if it's in the contest journal entry on the front page, and consequently be lead to your other vectors. You'll be able to share your work with more people. My last contest entry didn't win, but I'm pretty sure I still get most of my page views through that image.
Personally, I don't think my entry even has a shot at placing this time around, but that won't stop me from entering it (so long as I finish it...). Your vector is already done, might as well just enter it.

It's the angle - it actually is supposed to be like that for her cheek.the greys on her abdomen and gloves are being worked in - this is still a Work In Progress, I still have todo the hair shadows, skin tone and eyes (anything that is light grey/washed-out)

And Again: I need to know about the things I asked about, because THOSE are the places I am working on currently, so anyinput on those points is appreciated...

>>
requesting Chitoge
>>
>>1667601
i didn't want to be mean, it's just the way i feel about your work.
>>
>>1667614
You weren't being mean, you were just commenting on shit that wasn't done yet. The gloves and bodice are going to be the darker, almost black color I have been using, so yes: the boobs part needs to be darkened. Again: THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS. If you have issues with things that are "done" like the wrinkles, please let me know. Otherwise, if it is not done, wait and see if the color is better WHEN THAT PIECE IS COMPLETED.
>>
>>1667605
>Is there actual text on the seal on the book?
All the "text" is unreadable on the original, but on the vector, it isn't.

The seal's text is the opening text for every WH40K book (about it is the 40th millenimun, etc...) and the stuff on the gun, I decided to make thus:
Near the Skull:Destroy the heretics, Purge the unclean, Crush the Xenos Forthe emperor

The text under the bolt slider basically says "Point the barrel towards the unclean. Pull the trigger. Reload as needed."

Finally, the stuff in grey says Sacred militia, priestess squadron.

If I had known what the original artist put, I would have done so, but I think that what I put fits for a "promo image" for the inquisition.
>>
>>1667636
I think I have the majority of the armor done. Here is a comparison shot of the original on the right, and mine on the left. I was thinking of keeping the lighter grey top, but having it all be the darker color seems more in line with what the inquisition would have of their people.

I'm still working on the gloves, which are going to be the darker colors on the wrists/pads of her gloves, if anyone asks.

Comments or thoughts on coloration? I want to know, before I start putting in the more complex shadows for her rosary beads, belts, etc.

I also dislike the color of the book, and I am thinking of changing it to another color. Suggestions? Thoughts?
>>
>>1667717
Can you post the original pic? I kinda want to make a wallpaper out of it now
>>
>>1667725
Sadly, I don't have it. When I post the .AI it will have it in there.

This is the closest I canfind - the resolution is smaller than what I was working with...

http://www.zerochan.net/1102057
>>
>>1667717
I'm certainly fine with some recolorization, since the original is faded, but it may be too dark. The dark melds too closely to the light and loses its shininess, which mainly appiles to the black and gray parts. This makes it difficult to see contrast from light to dark. So the sheen for the pants, the highlights on the breasts, the highlights for the... pipes under her neck, the grenade etc. should have a greater contrast.

Only other issue i see would be the gmesh under her arms for the inside of the robe. Once you start crossing lines or have lines really close together , it creates a lot of weird pixelation that makes the coloring more awkward.

Other than that, its looking good. Interested to see how you color the hair and eyes.
>>
>>1667731
That's fine, it's more than big enough to make a wallpaper out of. Thanks.

Jesus, I wish my image was going as easily as this one is. I'm spending more time tweaking colors and gmeshes than anything else.

I think I'm going to work on the hair and skin next, just to give myself a break form the armor.

also, to give it contrast, I''d make the ribbons on her hairpin a different, contrasting color. As it is, they kind of just blend in because they are too similar...

>>
>>1668412
> Also that lamp with be gmesh hell, pic related.

Actually, that doesn't even need a gmesh - make the darker bits all the dark orange color as an overall overlay, then add in a gradient with several color points, and you can get away with it.

It's a heck of a lot better than how I had to do the wing on the fleur de lis on her armband or the armband's gold trim - that's several gradients stuck together and the angle rotated and adjusted. If I had done a gmesh, I'd still be on the first few feathers, if not the first part of the band...
>>
>>1668423
unfortunately I want the dark to fade out in 2 directions, in and up, so I am not sure it would work but I will try it.

Think of the rims in terms of "slices"

Each one of those dark lines across can be individually made. Also: think about using transparency to lighten it up by doing like 50% transparency near the top and bottom, and moving to less, the closer they get to the center/middle can help as well.

It's harder to explain here, but look at it with this in mind, and it should help some. I hope.

The source material for this is very intriguing. I don't know if I agree with the level of saturation on the colors thus far, but you are probably still in the early stages on some coloring and shading. You've done a great job depicting different textures and materials, from metallic to leathers and cloth.

>>1668277
This looks so amazing! I love the gradation into transparency with the hair! I look forward to the end result.

>>1668419
Same, great work on the kimono graphic! I just wish the eyes and some shading on the spear pole were better defined. Right now it looks to me like there's some kind of flower petals stuck in her eyes. A bit too busy, sharpen them up!

>>
If I may be so bold to ask, why is having portions of a character cropped off-frame such a huge no-no?
>>
Please and thank you.
>>
>>1668747
Because when I do this, I want to make something that looks good. If it looks good in a wallpaper, even better. Cropped off images on multiple sides rarely if ever let you do that. Fixing small crops can be difficult but doable, fixing large crops is mostly impossible.

It's not a limitation of the tools, but a limitation of what I as a vectorer would like to draw.

Thanks. The biggest issues is I am trying to work within a few constraints. Yes, these are personal things, but it's because of the THEME and setting; I want to stay as ":true" to that as possible.

The constraints are, in general:
* The "Setting" Warhammer 40K runs off a few set things: The inquisition is extreme, a LOT of their armor/coloration IS dark or super-saturated AND SEVERE.

I have painted some of these models, and played Dawn of War, and the inquisition models ALWAYS LOOK THIS SATURATED on purpose.

THe other constraint, is I am trying to adapt a "painting" into an "anime" With this being the case, I have to remove/lose some of the accent lines, because you wouldn't see them in anime, anyways. The best example is to look at the gold trim above the belt that is seamless colors for both sides and shading. In the original, this is all hilighted with white and black accent lines depending on if the "top" or "corners" ar in light or dark. This doesn't work well with the anime feel I have set up. If I did it this way, I would have to remove ALL the lining for the armor, and hilight it this way.

The third contraint comes from the fact that the saturation/contrast levels on the ORIGINAL are all over the place. Is it gray here and blak there? There is no real definition (especially with the cloak/cloth areas) and THAT is its own nightmare. I have averaged all the colors to the simple, saturated colors because IF I chose to give a different color pallette to this, I would only have to change up to 4 grades of color over thirty with the original.

SO thanks for the comments. I'm doing as best as I can with this stuff in mind..
>>
>>1668791
Ran out of room. To confirm this, look at any of the "inquisition" or "Sisters of battle" images, and you'll see a noticeable affection for super-saturation and black as a whole. Personally, I would have added in more of a bright or crimson red, because anything with "inquisition" in it looking like it is covered in bloood, is something to run away from FAST.

But I digress...

Ehhhh, I wouldn't say that. A good amount of lines could benefit from sharp points (the eyebrows, bottom eye lines, and mouth). The nose should be drawn as a hard line instead of a weird radial gradient. The collar for the shirt should not be connecting to the hair line. Lastly, some of the hairlines sharp points need to be messed with (bottom right and under the neck).

It is better than most new vectors, but I wouldn't say perfect. With a few fixes it will be much better.

Again, a bump is a bump. We dont' care WHO was bumping, but rather that they shouldn't. These threads are slow enough that the requests hang around for a while, even for those of us with long queues. And as stated in the original "rant", there was a mention NOT to bump not even five posts above it...

>>
>>1669224
I know it's been a varying line of opinion, but the three reasons *I* dislike bumps is:
* They really don't add anything to the request getting done sooner - how can they? They can't "supercharge a vectorerer" like in some anime. Nor is this like nominating a motion or person for a role like in politics.
* They remind me too much of the OLD days, when people would come in and say "me too" to everything, which was stupid and made a thread/request lose all context. Yes, I know I am OLD. 8P
* They promote others to follow this methodology, clogging the threads with useless bits and conversation, ergo making the thread "die" faster, ergo making the thread AND the request less likely to be seen/taken.

And yes, it's nice to see interest, and yes, it's nice to know others want it, but having one request asked for nicely really is enough, and it doesn't annoy the majority of the people looking at the thread.

But I digress...
>>
>>1669229

>>
>>1669233
LOL I dont' have a sick up my ass. He asked my opinion, I gave it.

And by the way, >>1669230 I'd like to see these for the clothing, which is where I was pointing out the uniformity of her.. well.. uniform. If this IS not strokes-turned-to-fills, it's interesting that you got them so perfect. Still: I would, if I were you, make the hair lines thinner, to give a bit more feel of "depth" to the image, but I digress..

As for the bump thing, it's been a sticking point in these threads for a long time. It's been one of the reasons WHY some people won't work on bumped requests. Iwas giving the REASONS why something happened, and the affects therein as INFORMATION.

But you, in your butthurt ANONYMOUS fashion, was thinking I was lording it over people. I put things out thare for people bluntly, yes, but it is in trying to stay OBJECTIVE instead of subjective. I point things out, and explain things (often poorly as my moniker shows) which does come off this way. If you dont' like it, dont' look at my replies. IT IS THAT SIMPLE. stop being a dumbass.
>>
>>1669234
I guess it's just one of those things that's fine until it gets out of hand. Just the notion that you are putting efforts for more than one person can be a good motivation but I wouldn't want a stupid up-vote system for requests either. I just don't think it's worth spending post counts pointing it out just yet when it only happens once or twice per thread.

Dude, You're just butthurt. Either stop reading my posts or have the balls to post with a moniker so I can ignore your dumbass, whiny comments. I NEVER said I was intellectually superior to ANYONE. you're just implying it because I happen to have a straightforward methodology.

And I have a perfect grasp of the english language: I amusing words that are easy enough to understand, AND I AM NOT WRITING A FUCKING PAPER. I try NOT to be a grammar nazi in forums, because we are all here trying to help people and have fun, and being a dumbass that has to sit thare and gripe about everything people write, and can't get the gist of what people are trying to convey, just makes YOU look like you're either, butthurt, being a jackass, or both. I feel a bit late with this now but I was going take the red pen out but ended up just making my own version of it so you can compare. I think you handled your outlines well enough for a newcomer considering the shitty resolution to work from and, like daul said, that usually the part where people fuck up the most. That being said there are a couple of ends on her hair that could look much better. Where it suffers the most are the parts where it feels like you relied on the original to guide yourself without understanding the actual composition of the picture (ex: nose, mouth, lower outlines for the eyes and shirt around the collar). That's something that you will pick up with experience and also learning the tools. You should probably aim for a much more complex image next project.

I'm not even going to bother quoting anything in all that clusterfuck, but I don't mind multiple people taking an interest in something, and to me, that is not a bump.

The actual bumps within hours of a post or within a few days annoy me, because the person doesn't know shit about vectoring and how long it actually takes. These people are too used to the 30 minute or less responses in render threads. That is just impossible for a vector. Having to retrace an entire outline and fully color the image takes infinitely longer than any render. Any decently good vector will take at least 20 hours to do, and most likely longer depending on the complexity. Not to mention most people take their time and don't work 24/7 straight, so 20 hours may be less than a day, but it may take a week or more to do. Because of that, if no one took your image, don't expect anyone to be working on it. Since this requires dedication and a lot of time, we need to like the image. Bumping it more than once in a thread will only make it less likely to do it.

PPI/DPI of a raster image is for print not screen display. Computers don't adjust to
compensate for PPI on screen... yet. Even scaling on retina/HiDPI screens use pixel
doubling to size things unless they are SVG images (SVG in a small PDF for UI
elements) in which case it scales it to the double-pixel calculated size.

>>1669340
This is why I copy/paste the vector into a smart object in Ps, I can make the thing as
big or small as I want in exact pixels without scaling a raster image.

Ai does not normally deal with things in pixels (you can set it so it does) it deals with things in units:

Maybe initially, but it would not be fair to say that for current versions of Illustrator.

to elaborate, it would be like using the wrong tool for the job, sure you can do that and you can sort of get the job done, but you won't be able to do it well. Similarly, using PPI to describe an image to be used for digital purposes works okay-ish, but doesn't convey all the information perfectly.
>>
>>1669360
>>1669367
It is almost never an issue. It is more convenient to call it something like that, even if it is wrong. It's just how we call cutouts of images renders, even though its nothing like what the original definition of the word is. Again, I'm fine with working "okay-ish". Most of the time it means what I implied earlier. There will be a few cases where it doesn't but I'm okay with that.

> Maybe initially, but it would not be fair to say that for current versions of Illustrator.
No, it is still true for the current Illustrator, see the order of the units used, the focus in solely on print initially and
then dead last is digital.
>>
>>1669376
But in the digital world measurements of length such as inches are almost never used.
>>
>>1669429
That does not change the fact that Ai is built that way and used that way.

I already said I don't save that way but that is how this app works, units not pixels.

>>
>>1669347
> and hence why I don't understand the usage of the term in these threads since most of the time we would be using the images digitally not as print.

The PPI/DPI monikers are used because exporting a file is as a RASTER, so if you say "300DPI" it makes that pixel size set to print specifics
This means that a 2000X2000 image comes out differently in printable areas of either 72 DPI or 600DPI (one is HUGE and one is a little over three inches) and while this has nothing to do with displays, the images are in either Inkscape or AI which were designed for print before digital became so prominent.

I'd go into more history and reasoning for it, but TL;DR and walls of text are best left to wikipedia...
>>
Basically, DPI/PPI is used here just to have a reference point on pixel density. If, in Ai, you have an image which is 6"x6" and set to export it at 600PPI, the size of the image translates to 3600x3600 Generally setting the PPI high also reduces banding & other undesirables because the rasterization process has more pixels to play with when compressing to PNG format. 99.9% of the time vectors made here won't make it out to print, but using PPI/DPI is an easy way to communicate things on a standard level everyone understands, much like what we call renders are not actually renders. Heck, I've been in the digital art community making signatures & avatars on forums for like 10 years and that's what renders have always been called there; renders. Trying to change the language of an established community is an exercise in futility.
>>
>>1669376
>using the order of units
just because a tool was made for print first does not mean that it is less proficient/significant in the digital space. I don't understand your point here.
>>1669444
its fucking weird because DPI makes a lot of sense in print since it means the amount of spots the printer has to ink per square inch, but not at all digitally. Which is the key point here. You can "resize" a 72PPI image to a 300PPI image and there will still be the same amount of pixels in that image, it's just that that image would be translated differently to a printer.
>>1669447

>>
>>1669448
>its fucking weird because DPI makes a lot of sense in print since it means the amount of spots the printer has to ink per square inch, but not at all digitally
Actually, it does. Since Ai WORKS IN INCHES, then rasterizing it in 600PPI instantly tells you how big that export will be. PPI = pixels per inch. Stop being so fucking hung up about this.
>>
>>1669451
> Ai WORKS IN INCHES
bullshit, it can work in any unit of measurement. If anything, it works only with algorithms since that is all computer programs do.
>Stop being so fucking hung up about this.

>>
>>1669448
What's not to get? Ai was made for people to make graphics for print. We are using the application in a way
that it was not intended but the language in it did not change as it became more popular for things like logos,
icons, and web and UI elements.

We talk here in the language of the application if that is too hard for you to understand because you have not
used it I can understand but face the fact that you are in a community that does. I wouldn't bash photographers
in a photo board for using photo terms that applied to film (there are many) even though they are using digital
cameras, it is simply the language they use because it correlates to their process.
>>
>>1669453
>What's not to get?
reason being I hate "tradition" being thrown around as an excuse when there is a clear and viable alternative for the current situation. I'm not saying to discard the use of PPI.

> too hard for you to understand
Read my above comments, I perfectly understand the definition of PPI. I understand if it's just tradition, I was under the impression that there was some higher deeper significance behind the use of PPI that makes a lot of sense other than just "tradition". Lets not resort to attacks on a person's character.

Anyway, I've dragged this long far enough, sorry for spamming the thread, back to lurking.
>>
>>1669452
> bullshit, it can work in any unit of measurement.
But by default it does not and we use the terms that apply.
For example, you can't tell the app to save in 5000px, it asks for the resolution in PPI and the type of AA you want
applied, those are your choices. Screen, medium, high or other. And yes, it works in algorithms but it does not export in them.

> I haven't insulted anyone yet
You are telling a whole community they are dumb for using the units they are given to save in. It is not a
hominem argument, you are insistent that we are using terms we shouldn't despite that is what we have and that it is
stupid to not change the terms that apply to vectors.

Our use of PPI has nothing to do with tradition, it has to do with the export window. When they add
export in ____px we will change to that but until then we are talking in the language of the program.
This is much like photographers will talk about settings on their DSLRs named in ways that match the
days of film. No one should make them use terms not on their cameras just so the name is digital friendly.
>>
>>1669455

>>
>>1669466
> there's an export to web function for a reason
And that export does not work well. It can add white lines around the outlines and does all the time which
is why I never recommend using it. We are using the real export, the one under File > Export... and that
does not have the options past the one I gave you. The rest of your arguments is referring to other programs
which we are not referring to when we talk about.

> so saying, I quote "fucking hung up" is meant to contribute to the discussion in a meaningful way?

God damn, the eyes are creepy. I don't know how you can mimic the scratchiness of the shadows in the original to help it, though.

Other than that, the only issue I see is that the white highlight for the ball on her neck lost some of its shininess from the original. All the other ones are fine, but that one could be brighter.
>>
>>1669469
he does have a point though, if export does not give you fine grained control (and since save for web sucks), then I would not use the export command in the first place, rather using the other tools he mentioned.
>>
>>1669474
Most of us still use export, like the updates where the result is not hugely important. You can still catch errors.
You can also do a huge resolution export and then scale in Ps.
>>
>>1669474
>>1669476
This is exactly the case. There is no issue with how I export my images. Most of the time they are much bigger than for what people need and the people that make it into wallpapers just resize them in Photoshop anyway.

The whole argument isn't really about the best exporting program or process. It started arguing over terminology. The fact that Ai's main export that the vast majority use references only in PPI, makes PPI the main reference. Until Ai actually changes it, the terminology won't really change.

Added the missing shadows to the clips. The shadows in the middle of the chest just looked like extraneous lines to me, but I added them in anyway. Moved the eye highlight above the outline, and leveled the eyes.
As far as the colored lines, to me it looks like all the lines are the same grayish color and the apparent difference in color is due to line thickness from whatever medium the original used. Looking at the lines for the neck, they're the same color as the dress and the same color as the chin. I figured the chin and dress are the same color by transitivity. That being said, I can do a version with lighter lines for the hair and dress if you guys want.

It's good you caught yourself, but in the future, one way to keep a discussion from looking like an "attack" is to rethink your wording: A lot of how it came of had a hint of hostility due to the words you chose. Wht I suggest is next time, before hitting "Post" stop, take a breath, read it through and ask yourself "Am I saying anything like YOU ARE, or YOU MUST? or even "This is foolish/stupid/(negative emotional affect)/etc?"

That will go a long way to keeping it more "civil"

Also, does her left knee look alright? It wasn't in the original image so I had to draw it myself.
>>
>>1669914
>>1669919
Knee looks fine to me, but I'm no artist.

It's looking pretty good. Consistency is a little off with her right side being generally thicker than her left (mainly in the clothes). Only other issue is lumpyness in the lines, mainly her hair and the legs.

For the hair, you generally want to minimize nodes to just at the tips, unless its a really long line that might need some tweaking. I still recommend starting with just nodes at the tips and adjusting as best you can before you add a node. For the back hairline, you don't want to use sharp points for the little bends in the hair, as they look like awkward kinks in relatively smooth hair. You will probably have to readjust nodes and make them smooth points instead. The bottom hair on her right side is also generally thicker than the hair at the top.

For the knees, you sometimes want lumpyness or not, depending on the artist. However, I still think you are using too many nodes, and could benefit from minimizing them, especially for her left knee. The nodes on both knees are generally uneven and creating inconsistencies as well, which can partly be due to too many nodes. It makes it hard to adjust handles between the nodes and can make it uneven.

As you do more vectors, you will realize the potential of using handles to your advantage and be able to make much smoother lines. It just takes practice.

PS: Exporting in a higher resolution would be nice. Something around 300 PPI should be perfect.

I'm assuming this is the knee you're asking about... this started as a "quick fix" by simply erasing a bit of the crease between her legs but then I noticed the poor anatomy and had to take it further. I understand if you'd rather stay closer to the source material than use my suggestions here, but that is not what legs look like and it was driving me crazy.
