>no save feature
this ruins the game
>>
>>4257658
>i'm underage: the post
>>
>>4257658
Fuck off to /v/ with your shitty b8. Game takes like 2 hours to beat.
>>
>>4257664
>accuses other people for being underage because they don't have time to sit around and play a game for 5 hours
are you NEET anon?
>>
>>4257670
literally just leave the console running so you dont lose your progress. or play it the superior way which is on an emulator, which has save states.
>>
>>4257675
>just leave your console running
are you stupid?
>>
>>4257658
The game's short, with or without the whistles. You could always play the All-Stars version which does include saving, but that comes at great expense to the game's aesthetic and sound in my opinion. Or... you could just use save states, unless you're a hardware hipster faggot. This is such a non-issue any way you slice it.
>>
>>4257670
there are fucking warp whistles
>>
>>4257682
what?
that's what we did
a NES doesn't use much power
>>
>>4257658
Nintendo obviously agrees as they included a save feature in the SNES remake.
>>
>>4257682
no but you are. what's wrong with leaving it running?
>>
>>4257712
I get a lot of power outages.
>>
>>4257716
kek
>>
>>4257658
They could have at least included a password.

>>4257687
>The game's short

I tried to do a no warp run once and it took 3 hours to get to world 6 and I had to call it quits. That's way too long to expect someone, especially kids, to have to re-play each time.
>>
>>4257658
>Game forces you to balance plaything through levels quickly, and exploring thoroughly to stock on lives and powers.
The meta game is a battle of endurance
>>
>>4257768
Because a no warp run isn't the intended way to play it. Literally everyone knew where the warp whistles were. They showed it in the first reveal in the wizard movie.

You're building up supplies to take on world 8. That's how the game works.
>>
>>4257658
use the fucking warp whistles then you pleb
>>
Using warp whistles takes less time than it would take you to save after every single stage like the bitch you are.
>>
>>4257774
You must be actually insane if you legitimately believe what you just typed.
>>
>>4257774
the warp whistles is intended for you to not have to save. got to world 5 before you had to go to bed last night? grab the two warp whistles in world 1 and youre back to where you were in less than 5 minutes.
>>
>>4257805
>>4257849
I actually agree with the guy. Warped runs will give you zero extra lives and zero items which makes some of the later levels a real drag.
>>
>>4257849
Try and warp to worlds 7 and 8 without items and extra lives, unless you are superb at SMB3, good luck beating them.
>>
http://www.nintendo.com/nes-classic/super-mario-bros-and-super-mario-bros-3-developer-interview
>Miyamoto: Back when Super Mario Bros. 3 came out, everyone was stressed because they couldn't save, with some even saying they played it through without ever turning off the power! (laughs)
>Miyamoto: But this time you've got four Suspend Points. Even better, you have four for each of the 30 games.
>Miyamoto: So I hope players will save all they want to relieve the stress they felt before.
>>
>>4257768
>They could have at least included a password.

Too many variables for item stock. They COULD do passwords but they'd be 9000 characters and you'd be bitching about that
>>
>>4257920
>>4257882
this is a fair point, though. there is however the option to collect supplies in the earlier worlds (the mushroom houses accessible by boat in world 3 comes to mind) before warping to the later worlds.
but tbqh world 7 and 8 are not that hard if you know where to use the items you receive. in world 8 there is literally only 2 levels that pose any real threat without powerups (the airship and 8-1).
you also obtain leaves from all 3 hand levels, and all the autoscrollers grant powerups. doing world 6 and 7 without powerups is arguably harder.
however, i have played the game for over 25 years. a first time player with no prior 2d mario experience will get shat on if he warps to world 8
>>
>>4257946
Not including the save feature was just a cash grab. they knew the game was going to sell like hot potatoes either way, so they just skipped the feature in order to make even more profit.
>>
>>4257658
Man, you purists have it rough. I've been save-stating for the better part of 2 decades. You should try it sometime, it's fun.
>>
>>4257946
The fortress of 8 is quite hard too if you don't know the trick.
>>
>>4257768
Workarounds were offered, faggot. If you're going to say no saves ruined it back in its day, I can assure you no one gave a shit. Saving was not guaranteed and was often a rarity back then, and everything else about SMB3 outdid the competition and its predecessors.
>>
>>4257954
hah, yeah i guess so. but once you know how to beat it, it becomes a spot to safely regain firepower before heading into bowsers castle
>>
>>4257658
There are emulators old enough to count as /vr/ that can run this game fine and save states. Additionally, no one cared back then. Kids were happy to play this game regardless, because it was the best in its class when it arrived and saving wasn't commonplace.
>>
>>4257965
>it was the best in its class when it arrived
it is still the best
>>
>>4257968
The All stars versions is better though
>but the original feeling
no, they fixed everything to look better, I don't know why people claims it looks worse in all stars.
It has more detail and shows better backgrounds, also the colors are better too.
If you want a bad art style just look at new super mario bros.
>>
>>4257970
Eh, I think you're wrong, but I think there's less room for aural subjectivity. It sounds markedly worse. The 8bit instrumentation has a lot more character than... whatever the hell is that lead synth is all over All Stars. Some sort of muffled organ? In any case the whole package sounds like a muffled carnival and the sounds aren't nearly as punchy too.
>>
>>4257972
So you think that 8 bit sound is superior to 16 bit sound? you just love your chiptunes, nothing else.
>>
>>4257970
>all stars look better
i grew up with the all stars version, yet i do prefer the look of the original for some reason. but i am a minimalist.
>inb4 hipster
other than that the all stars version has the annoying zoom in effect when you enter a level (instead of just the reverse effect once the level starts).
but arguing that smb3 isnt the greatest 2d platformer because the all stars version is better is kind of missing the point.
they went to great lengths to preserve the exact same feeling as the original, and i think we can all agree they succeeded with that
>>
>>4257972
oh, and this. the NES sound chip is in most cases superior when it comes to performing soundtracks composed for the NES sound chip
>>4257975
i grew up with the SNES, but i think the NES 8bit sound has a much warmer feel to it. and no, i dont listen to chiptunes (except for the occasional actual game soundtracks)
>>
>>4257975
Yes, that disingenuous generalization is absolutely what I meant. No, I just mean that it sounds (and looks) like ass compared to the original and is a waste of the hardware, actually.
>>
>>4257980
This. I think the SNES soundchip excels in games that were written for it, that can use the greater number of voices available to their advantage to create more complex, layered songs.

Cramming chiptunes into it doesn't do them any good.

Why Nintendo is only company that does based things like this?

Like how Bayo 2 on Wii U was coming with free copy of Bayo 1, since first one never was on a Nintendo console.

You can argue "hurr durr HD re-releases", but they never also contain a new fucking game in one pack. It's like, imagine Super Mario All Stars without Super Mario World. And even when they do it they charge like 100 bucks. I guess in this day and age it's perfectly reasonable to charge extra for HD re-releases, BUT THEY ARE NEVER BUNDLED WITH THE NEW GAME, they are their own separate thing now.
>>
>>4257716
Not OP~
>>
>>4257975
Not to burst your bubble but SNES uses chiptunes as well. It sounds a little different but it's still not CD audio or FM synthesis.
>>
>>4257658
Why are people here so defensive of this? It's a legitimate issue
>>
>>4257920
>>4257946
You can get as many lives as you want in world 1-2 or 1-3. Whichever one has those pipes that keep spawning goombas
>>
>>4257882
You don't need items to beat world 8
>>
>>4257682
The NES uses less than 10 Watts, and probably not even that, considering the Famicom pulls like 4 Watts at its absolute max. It's not gonna make a dent on your electrical bill or your console's lifespan.
>>
>>4258220
Some HD remakes do get it right. The HD re-release of Odin Sphere changed the game a whole lot, but it also includes the entire original game, completely untouched, right down to being 480p in 4:3 aspect ratio.
>>
>>4258230
no, you dont. i can do the entire game as small mario without dying in like 25 minutes, but thats beside the point
>>
>>4258309
That's pretty impressive. Around half an hour is what I remembered being able to do the game in but I never imposed additional limitations on my run which I think is neat. I've tried developing difficulty increasing game shark codes before with limited success. Do you do hard type romhacks?
>>
>>4257658
step 1: get a comparable mmc3 donor cart with battery
step 2: burn CHR and PRG of that hacked SMB 3 that includes battery backup
step 3: solder in

literally done
>>
>>4258321
With regular warp whisteling, no restrictions i can do smb3 in just under 12 minutes, just for comparison.
As for hard romhacks, yes I do play them (and to certain extent make them. Right now im working on a stupid hard LTTP hack). Havent played any smb3 hacks in a while though.
Never tried making any smb3 rom hacks, but im planning to try it once i finish the LTTP hack
>>
>>4258230
I know, bagina cramps. Not a single item is required to complete the game if you got good. If you didn't, then warping will make you lack the items when you most need them.

>>4258226
You can also easily farm coins in that one castle in the pipe world, forgot which one it was.
>>
>>4257682
i appreciate the stupidity of this post
>>
>>4258329
Yeah, it's always more straight forward how adventure type games can be made harder. I've been playing a little bit of that Zelda 1 item radomizer but I was never a beast at that game. Maybe I should check out the Metroid 1 randomizer. I wonder what the chances are of it breaking completion. For something like a mario game I feel like any diminishing of the physics might break certain levels

But then I guess if some certain amount of worlds were broken by the hard type physics it might make some items actually necessary and add (restore for some people apparently) that element to the game.

>>4258339
They could be playing on earlier levels with the same warp whistles or they could be brute forcing levels on 8 until they got good, their choice.

I guess it just reminds the players who may have beat the game by item hoarding that they can still increase their skill and beat the game much faster. I think some gamers don't like that and want to feel done but then those same gamers might turn around and complain about modern easy games having no replayability.
>>
>>4258420
>randomizers
i really like the concept of randomizers, and if you really want to get into it the LTTP randomizer is the far superior one.
something about that game just makes randomization work incredibly well. i have honestly played close to a 100 LTTP randos by now and its still fun. the logic for the randomization is very well made so they are never uncompletable or containing softlocks.
i mostly play it with glitched logic though, where game breaking glitches are required to beat it (proves to be a great challenge even for someone who knows the game in great detail like me). then there are the enemy randomizers and entrance randomizers on top of that, but havent really fucked too just much with that.

but regarding smb3, i actually played a warpless game of smb3 rando this weekend. while it sounds like it would be just as easy as the regular game, something about the lack of knowledge of what the next level is, and randomized music and enemies really fucks with your mind and makes it harder than expected.
great fun though, so you should check that out too if you havent
>>
>>4258328
Or, you know, just use a flashcart.
>>
>>4258449
any good resources for learning LTTP glitches? i've been streaming some rando runs but i suck and can't do any of the cool tricks
>>
>>4258462
a runner named superSKUJ has some quite extensive tutorials on youtube for the most useful major glitches (outdoor clipping, indoor clipping, somaria door glitches, bottle glitches etc etc), as well as the minor glitches (bomb jumps, fake flippers, glitch speed). he also has some random videos with neat specific applications.
once you get the techniques down you can watch runs in the various major glitch cathegories to learn about more specific applications. then you just play the game and try glitching around. the possibilities are nearly limitless once you have the tech down.
you can also try to catch this superSKUJ guy on twitch and he will most likely be able to answer any questions you might have on LTTP glitches. he is literally the LTTP glitch guru
>>
>>4257658
I may sound like a retard but am I the only one who explores the whole level, collect everything and play it like I have the time of the world.

Also I'm playing it on the SNES
>>
>>4258479
no. this is how you should play the game until you know everything
>>
It took me 2.5 hours to beat this game without warps in one sitting. All the faggots complaining in this thread are 18 year olds who can't get gud at a simple platform game.
>>
>>4257658
Warp whistles, young man. There are enough of them in the first two worlds to get you to anywhere else in the game.

So here's how this works: stop playing when you reach a new world(let's say 5). When you restart the game, grab the two warp whistles in world one (one in level 3, one in the small castle). After this, use one to go to the world select screen. Since it's world 5 we want, go to world 4 and use the second whistle, allowing you access to world 5.
Resume playing normally.

A little more involved to get to world 8, but it only requires you to replay the first 2 worlds (so what,20 minutes?)

Who needs a save file?
>>
>>4258498
let me blow your mind:
>get the first whistle in 1-3 by crouching on the white block to then pass behind the black background at the exit
>get the second whistle in the first fort
>use one whistle to get to the world selection screen
>use the second whistle ON the world selection screen
>get warped directly to the world 8 pipe
so no need to play up to the first fort to get to world 8
>>
>>4258508
no need to play further than to the first fort*
>>
It didn't even need a save, desu. Just a password for every world.
>>
>>4257658
>Not owning the super version via Super Mario All Stars on the SNES
>>
>>4257675
>play it the superior way which is on an emulator
Sure is reddit in here today
>>
>>4257997
Did you know that Lost Levels is Mario 2 in Japan?
>>
As a kid, I don't remember playing through levels 3-7. I think we just always did the whistles as level 8 was hard enough.
>>
This game needs to be played on the SNES Allstars mode. Superior graphics and music, save features.

Don't let the retrofags detour you. Their childhood memories are just blinding them.
>>
>>4258651
Snes is still retro.

I think the debate is centered around the original. No one was fucking crying about it then and save functions were already in numerous games. It's modern gaymer woes.

Its not that much of a problem, just use the warps if you're pressed for time. If it bothers you that much, play Mario All-Stars
