Pretty much every FF character since 3 have been fanfic job creations. You have a versatile enough system things start to write themselves.

Don't go for jRPG or Roguelike route - they are dime a dozen and the market is oversaturated.

I have a love and hate for action rpgs. My problem with them is that they're trying to be something they arent, and it holds back the action aspects as you try to feign yourself as a better game. Valkyrie and Wild Arms are kinda like this, and is kind of why I couldn't get into those games. Grandia is a close second. You either go all turn based or all action. Hybrids just feel gimmicky for little payback. My benchmark for an action rpg is Star Ocean. And my benchmark for turnbased is obviously all the crpgs of our time, though I favor mostly FFX.
