Thoughts & opinions on Sonic CD, /vr/?

Literal 10/10

The remake sucks because it added unnecessary Sonic 2 physics, and got rid of the time reset mechanic.
Ports on PC Windows and GC/PS2 also suck, the only good version of Sonic CD is the original on Sega CD.

Also JP soundtrack is superior, but US also has a good music (Stardust Speedway is better in US ver.)

How much does that affect the actual gameplay, besides Chaos Collision not being too literal?
>>
>>2758112
time travel was a neat idea but almost feels like a lot of wasted dev time because it was only used for backtracking for generators.

removal of wacky workbench would improve the game. i have no complaints otherwise and the engine remake flat out fixes the special stages.
>>

JP/EU OST pls thx fam
>>
>>2758134

In original Sonic CD, when you're past 5 minutes in any given act, and you time travel (either past or future), the timer will reset to 5:00. This helps not getting a time over if you like exploring the levels. On the HD remake, you can only play 10 minutes of any act, no matter if you time travel or not.

>>2758135

Not much, actually, but it renders the Super Peel Out obsolete since the spindash doesn't need to charge.
>>
>>2758210
You can change the spindash back to the original in the options menu.
>>
>>2758221

I know, but the default is the Sonic 2 and that's how most people play it.

That seems like an incredibly worthless criticism.

Don't worry so much about how other people are experiencing it.

Amazing game. Moaned at my sister for buying me the game when i asked for a Sonic LCD Game watch.

Turned out the game was great. First time i completed it was on a saturday morning eating a tuna/cheese toasted sandwich.
The smell on those sandwiches always remind me of my victory.

Timetravel aspect was great. If i wanted i could just blast through the level or explore if i wanted. Probably my favorite Sonic game.
Hated the iOS remakes. Games always felt off and the physics were completely different.

Sonic CD is my pick for the best looking Sonic game. There's lots of detail in the backgrounds and foregrounds, and the colors are very sharp and vibrant. Not to mention the variety of landscapes with the different time periods.
>>

I love the game but is there any point to the future stages? You can easily avoid bad futures by your second run and going to the good future seems pretty pointless.
>>
>>2758851

They have no badniks (although there's still hazards like spikes, etc) and a lot of rings.

You can just go to the goal in the Past stage once you destroy the generator machine, so maybe there's no "point", but it's still nice being able to visit the good future stages if you want.
>>
the only Sonic game with gameplay I can stomach

>>
>>2758417
Fucking this. Worst 2D Sonic easily. I have no idea why people still defend this game as a masterpiece in 2015. Lots of people have played it now, you don't have to pretend to like it anymore.
>>
>>2758406
Picodrive is amazing, and Sonic CD runs flawlessly in terms of fullspeed and accuracy, I thought it wouldn't because of it's Sega CD and stuff, but it just blew my mind, same with other Sega CD games I've played (Earthworm Jim: Special Edition and Eye of the Beholder),

Also includes savestates (I have a savestate for every stage 3 good future, since you can't really play the good futures on time attack).
>>
>>2758120
>Ports on PC Windows and GC/PS2 also suck, the only good version of Sonic CD is the original on Sega CD.

Nigga what?
The cutscenes looked hideous on the Sega CD, and some saint who had access to the original animation sequences actually UPGRADED them on the old Windows 95 release. That version also had faster load times.

I love nostalgia goggles as much as the next guy, but the Win 95 port was superior.
>>
A marvelous game that took Sonic in a fresh direction.

Sad to know it's unfinished.
And I don't mean "unfinished" like kids use it now when they think a game is glitchy but they just don't know how to play.

I mean literally unfishined. There was stuff cut from this game due to dev time restraints.
Going to the future still serves no purpose other than to trip you up if you're zipping through the stages too fast.
>>
>>2759949
>Win 95 port was superior
Sometime I'm going to remaster my copy to use the JP/EU soundtrack.
>>
>>2758417
Bruh, you seem to not realized that Sonic ended with the 90's.

There was Sonic 1, Sonic CD, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. Any Sonic after couldn't compare to other games of the time, and ESPECIALLY couldn't compare to those 16-bit Sonic games.

To say it's the worst is to say it's the least of 5, which really isn't that bad. To say it had "gimmicky 90s" music isn't even an inslut because it was a product of the 90s.
>>
>>2759996
Shouldn't be too hard. It's all CD audio files. Most burning software can swap those things out no problem. Plus I'm pretty sure the game referenced track numbers rather than physical disc position, so there shouldn't be a need for any hacking of any sort.
>>
>>2760007
That's why I'm going to bother in the first place, it's braindead simple.
>>
>>2759949
>That version also had faster load times.

The PC port added MORE loading screens than the Sega CD version. Each time you time travel, after you see Sonic spinning in the air, you go to a "now loading" screen with tiny planet on the back (the same screen from the D.A. Garden sound test).
I found that port annoying because of that.

The intro cutscene can be seen in HD in youtube nowadays.
>>
>>2758360
>It bothers me because people are playing a romhack
>Romhack
>>
>>2760197
> I can get what that version offered elsewhere in 2015, therefore it can't be said that was a defining characteristic that made it better 20 years ago.

Nice logic, friend.

And I don't know what you're talking about with the more loading. I can only assume this means one of two things:

There were multiple Windows ports, and we played 2 different versions.

or

How long/often it loaded differed based on hardware specs.

I specifically remember looking through the BMP and AVI files stowed away on the CD, finding the little planet "loading" art and thinking "What is that? Why haven't I seen it in the game?"
>>
>>2760251
>Nice logic, friend.

But it's true, why would you contempt yourself with the old 1996 PC version's intro FMV, when you can watch it in HD nowdays?

The game itself and how it performs is a different matter. As I said, the HD remake is nice, but it removed mechanics for no reason so I can't take it as a definitive version.
If the remake retained at least the time reset mechanic, then I'd consider it.

As for multiple versions on Windows, I don't know, I owned the one released in 1996, the first one, I don't know if there were others, but yeah I remember the little planet screen showing up every time I time travelled. You can also see that on the PS2/GC version, since they used the PC port on there.
>>
>>2758112
Had it as a kid and never really liked it. I didn't find it nearly as enjoyable as the Genesis games.
>>
>>2760261
>why would you contempt yourself with the old 1996 PC version's intro FMV, when you can watch it in HD nowdays?

In 1996, the PC version had (and still has) better-looking cutscenes than the Sega CD version. This is a fact that remains true independently of what YouTube has to offer. That's why it's an invalid argument. Also, the newer 2012 re-release removed the vocals from the original opening. (I forget if the vocals were missing from the US or the JP/EU opening or both, but still...) Not cool.

>HD remake

You mean the the 2012 re-release on PS3, 360, and PC? I wouldn't call that "HD" or a "remake" by any definition of either of those words. And yes. I do recall THAT version adding more loading screens... or was that the Sonic Gems collection? But that's all different than what came out for PC in 1996.

>it removed mechanics for no reason

What? Now it sounds like you're making stuff up.

>If the remake retained at least the time reset mechanic

Again, not sure what you're talking about here. In Sonic CD, you go into the past and destroy the machine (roboticizer, or what ever you want to call it) in acts 1 and 2 in order to make a good future in act 3. This mechanic has been present in every version I've played. Namely, Sega CD, 1996 Windows PC, Japanese Gamecube Sonic Gems, Xbox 360 and PS3.
So...
Huh?

>As for multiple versions on Windows, I don't know.

I wasn't sure either. I just found out that the 2012 re-release DID land on PC as well, but I'm not certain if there were multiple versions in the 90s.

I vividly recall spending long hours in front of the PC version. That was my primary source of memories. Just a few years ago, a friend bought a Sega CD and Sonic CD. The nostalgia goggles fell off both our faces as we played that sucker and wondered how this could be......... worse?

Granted, I was playing the PC version on a Pentium 133mhz with 16mb of ram and a 4x CD-rom drive. Considerably beefier than the Sega CD.
>>
>>2760342

What I mean is that both Sega CD and PC Windows (1996) versions of the intro/outro of Sonic CD are bad quality compared to what we get in this day in age.
But if you wanna keep it retro, there's a better version of the intro/outro in Sonic Jam for the Saturn (in the video gallery extras).
But okay, if you want to win the intro argument, I'll concede that the PC version FMV has better quality than than the Sega CD FMV. And that's about the only advantage it has.

>You mean the the 2012 re-release on PS3, 360, and PC? I wouldn't call that "HD" or a "remake" by any definition of either of those words

Well, it's commonly called the "HD remake", because it's a remake from scratch (made by that Taxman guy who is known for doing sonic romhacks) and its HD (has high definiton resolution and screen ratio).

>What? Now it sounds like you're making stuff up.

Read the thread, I already explained what the time reset mechanic is. I'm not talking about the 1996 PC Windows version though, I'm only talking about the Taxman remake here. The "HD Remake".
>>
>>2760342
There were technically 2 versions of Sonic CD for Win95 - the more popular version uses DirectX, while the uncommon version uses Intel's Dino libraries.
>>
>>2760342
>Also, the newer 2012 re-release removed the vocals from the original opening. (I forget if the vocals were missing from the US or the JP/EU opening or both, but still...) Not cool.
Did it really? I dislike the vocals for both Toot Toot Sonic Warrior and Sonic Boom.

Which track does it use?
>>
Second best game in the franchise.
Just wish it were longer but I get the effort that went into the longer levels.
>>
>>2760342
>You mean the the 2012 re-release on PS3, 360, and PC? I wouldn't call that "HD" or a "remake" by any definition of either of those words.
It's built from scratch.
On an entirely new engine.
What part of that isn't a fucking remake? Are you actually retarded? (answer is probably yes, because you're in a Sonic thread. Plot twist i"m just as much a retard for responding.)
>>
>>2760387
Both. You could change the soundtracks in that one.

I forget which one had the vocals removed tho. Think it was Toot Toot.
>>
>>2760423
Because it wasn't the god awful abortion that Sonic 4 was... yes, I was fooled. It was, for better or worse, better than what Sega could have done in house.

And I'm a different kind of retard, not the standard "sonic thread" fare. I wouldn't argue for a minute that any Sonic made after the 16-bit era was anything but bullshit.

Different kind of retard entirely.

I agree. So many people cite CD as a favourite only because relatively few people played it first time around, so it had 'underground' hipster value. It was easier to justify liking a game nobody had played. Since emulation and the Sonic Gems Collection, more people have tried it and realised how shit it is, so those still wanting to be hipster are having to reverse-engineer reasons for their phoney appreciation.

My biggest single criticism of the game is the method you have to time travel, i.e. maintaining speed for a period of time in levels which I'm told were designed for exploration, not speed. It's a big pain in the ass to play and not much fun.
>>
>>2760887
There's a difference between music of the era and gimmicky badly aged music that is of its respective era.

One day you'll get older. Not old man old. Just older than you are now. You'll still like the things you liked as a child and younger people just won't get it. You'll form a well-thought coherent argument about why that thing you liked is still good today despite the naysayers. You'll be proud of yourself for how much sense it makes and how rose-tinted-glasses-less it is.

That's when it will click that we're doing the same thing right here right now, but you're just on the opposite end of it. That's when you'll learn to appreciate things for their inherent pros and cons rather than whether or not they come across as "old" or "dated."

Man, way to have strong hyperbolic opinions.

Sonic CD is pretty good compared to 1, 2 and 3 because it's different, and has unique features. Whether you like these features or not is completely subjective and, let me tell you, irrelevant.

As for Amy Rose... what's wrong with her? She only appeared for a few seconds.
I'll remind you that Sonic CD was released in 1993, before Deviant Art was a thing, so there's no point hating on Sonic or characters from the Sonic franchise just because of deviant art sonic autist boogeyman from the 00s that likely started playing Sonic on the 6th gen.
>>
>>2758417
>dumbfuck unplayable special stages

>>
The bosses ended up too easy, but I liked how they often emphasised Robotnik's grandstanding and hubris causing him to make mistakes, giving you an opening. The walker in Palmtree Panic is shown to be invincible, but then Robotnik goes for an unnecessarily grandiose kill stroke, leaving himself totally open; Sonic is dead to rights in Quartz Quardent, but Robotnik is so confident and laid back about killing you that he doesn't notice his own machine falling apart. I much prefer the regular style of boss, but the CD bosses felt like they had a narrative to them that came from Robotnik being a showy egomaniacal genius.
>>
Love how kids hate CD because of preconceived notions and somehow put 3 on a pedestal when it's 3 that had the incredibly gimmicky, simplistic, bullshit levels with stiffer controls, slicker-looking graphics, and such while CD was near-perfect.

It's really sad to see an entire generation of games influenced by the post-1995 crap generation of games made for non-gaming casuals try to pass judgement on an entire generation of games they will never, ever understand.

CD's stage design is messy and it doesn't really seem to emphasize the idea of exploration, often making it difficult to backtrack when needed.
when did this 3 has gimmicky levels thing come in anyway, most of 3&K is just straight platforming
like, I guess it can be somewhat forgiven -- Marble Garden and Carnival Night aren't terribly great levels (and a bunch of people got stopped by the barrel for whatever reason), but Angel Island, Hydrocity, Ice Cap, most of Launch Base, and all of S&K except Sandopolis 2 is great

CD's got nicer visuals by far though (style mainly, the closest S3 gets to matching Sonic CD in style is Hydrocity, that stage is gorgeous), and CD's "Sonic can move after jumping from a roll" is pretty much the ideal way for Sonic to control.

Seconded. There's nothing wrong with Sonic CD Amy Rose.

It was a differnet era when there was nothing inherently wrong with making a female counterpart to your hero. This was long before the furry fandom was as ubiquitous as it is now, and it was way easier to just accept these kinds of characters as an innocent addition.

>>
>>2764767
We've heard this before. Sonic 4 was supposed to be the return to the classic Sonic and everyone hated it.

I don't have it but there's an image floating around about the release cycle of modern sonic games. The game is announced and everyone will be optimistic but cautious. A trailer is shown and everyone will claim it's the next Sonic 2 or 3. Then the game gets released and it's another Sonic 06. Then the cycle repeats.

Sonic will never be what he used to be. The best we've seen in recent years is Sonic Generations, which was alright but nothing special.
>>
>>2764767
They keep saying they haven't been good in "recent years." I don't think these guys realize the series has only been good for about 5 of its 24 year lifespan.

The original games were great because they were a product of the 90s through and through. Everything since has been kept afloat by Deviant Art, furries, the crossover audience therein, and young parents who remember Sonic of the 90s and buy their kids the new ones because they're "safe."

It's gotta be radical tubular totally awesome cool if it's gonna return to its roots.

... and have better music. Sonic 4 had a REJECTED TRACK from the already sub-par Genesis port of the the already sub-par Sonic 3D Blast, for fuck's sake.

> reverse engineer reasons for phony appreciation

Damn dude. Lots of conclusion jumping there.

Believe it or not there were and are people who like it simply because they like it, and it's got nothing to do with hipsters and cliques. Read the thread. There's plenty of people giving real quantifiable reasons why they enjoy it.
Not everyone with an opposing opinion has an ulterior motive. In fact, most don't.

But this is 4chan, and you never know who's trolling, so I guess a lot of that goes staight out the window, huh?

I'd like for us all to pause a moment
>First time i completed it was on a saturday morning eating a tuna/cheese toasted sandwich.
The smell on those sandwiches always remind me of my victory.
and really just take this all in.

Man I love me some nostalgia. I envy your sandwich smelling victories, anon.

Weren't CD and 2 initially in development at the same time, despite 2 coming out a little before? Two different teams, two different directions. One added Tails, the other didn't.

In fact, the Sonic CD easter egg art of Tails with the message "see you next game" was supposed to be a Sonic 2 teaser, but since Sonic 2 ended up coming out first, it just got confusing.

Take that all with a grain of salt. It's been a while since Ive read up on this stuff. My details may be a bit fuzzy.

No, just projecting in a condescending attempt to win an imaginary argument.

*shrug*

I was assuming there was a genuine vidya conversation happening, but I'm always ready for it to turn into something like this. After all, this is 4 chan, and everyone here is, by some measure, an insufferable piece of shit.

I'd rather give genuine responses and brush it off if it turns out to be some troll attempt rather than assume everyone's out to get me.

Really, I ain't even mad.
>>
>>2769962

Actually, CD needs Tails and Cream.
>>
>>2758112
Sonic CD was probably the best game in the series. Up there with Sonic Spinball.
>>
>>2761161
>It felt like Sonic 1.5
Technically it was. It started development before Sonic 2 did. That's why you get the Tails teaser at the end, also why it's got more of 1's focus on exploration and momentum setpieces than 2.

Aside from the level design being a little clunky in places, it my personal favourite in the series in terms of sound and design.

Sonics CD design was arguably the best, shame it never stuck.

The gameplay is like halfway between Sonic 1 and 2, which isn't a compliment. The level designs are just jumbled shit for the most part. The OST (both versions) is a lot of... I don't even have the words honestly. It's just cringey, mid 90's fag music, basically. And the time travel element is sort of lost amidst all the shitty level design, so it's largely pointless and adds nothing to the game in the slightest.

And yes, I thought so back in the day too.

Sorry that something indicative of the era it was released in isn't something you can relate to. Too bad 90's Sonic is best Sonic and everything else is utter cashgrab trash.

>And yes, I thought so back in the day too.
Playing it on a collection or port isn't "back in the day," kid. Just cuz it was before your pubes grew doesn't mean shit.

I need to put more of these together. Too bad TSR doesn't have Wacky Workbench or Stardust Speedway, the latter of which is probably the most visually-interesting level.
