Fuck Metal slug 3. Tried playing it with a friend on fightcade and it just... It feels like the difficulty was turned up to 8 and it just wasn't enjoyable at all. Then I tried playing X with a stranger and it felt GOOD. It felt fair and fun.
So let it be known that three is a pile of horse-shit on co-op
Git gud
>>3332413
It's tolerable alone. I can 1cc it alone
It's when it's co-op that it's just too much
RAWKET LAWNCHAIR!
What are some of the great PSX JRPGs? Or RPGs in general? Like a lot of people, I played Final Fantasy and a bit of Chrono Chross, but not much else.
I never finished Chrono Cross or FF9.
Grandia
Lunar 1, 2
Wild Arms 1, 2

With the CD add-on it looks like a toilet, but that's okay because the toilet is a place to relieve yourself and have privacy.
The controller is unique.

The box it came in is very cool. It was a novel idea to try and use two 32 bit cpu's in tandem to have a "64 bit" system. It was competent at sprite scaling.
What is the oldest remake of a game that you know?
prob Super Castlevania IV
>>3331212
>Ueno only considers Super Castlevania IV a remake of the original Castlevania to some extent
it was more of a overhaul of the original game than a brand new game
"Lesser" versions of games/franchises that are actually worth your time.
I've been playing trough the 8-bit Game Gear/Master System Sonic games lately, and with the notable exception of Sonic Blast, It's struck me how good most of them are. They put the formula at its most basic, yet often feature elaborate level designs and ideas that could and would work itself into the "main" series, and I like searching for the emeralds instead of having to earn them trough bonus stages.
Also, the music has that 8-bit whistle in the shower quality to it that just adds to the charm.

>>3331046
Chaos is pretty crummy as well imo, but I do love the first two.
I play the Genesis originals every now and then, but I usually just get tired, bored or both at some random point (I'm a bit more tolerant for S3&K). The 8-bit ones are just way more fun to play all the way through somehow
Heiankyo Alien, Lock 'N Chase, and Shamus for Gameboy. I also prefer the GBC version of Azure Dreams to the Playstation version.
It's not a demake of the original like the western marketing campaign wanted you to think, it's actually a separate game in the series called "Ghost Babel" in Japan.
But it successfully marries the gameplay of the previous 2D Metal Gears with innovation made in the Solid series, and is honestly one of the better titles in the series.
While I'm waiting for the game to download.
How do I Evil-ish party?
My idea was:
Protagonist (Fighter / Mage)
Kagain (Fighter)
Viconia (Cleric)
Shar-Teel (Fighter switched to Thief)
Edwin (specialist Mage)
Branwen (Cleric)
Other Infinity Engine games are welcome as well.
>>3331002
That's pretty much it, you have a solid fighter, a great cleric, and a great mage.
>>3331002
I think i used Tiax for Branwen and Jan Jansen in 2, just for the fun.
It took me about 5 playthroughs to even try Kagain. Fuck, I'm stupid. Easily the best tank in the entire series.
Let's talk about hidden, often beta and debug content that went unused in the finished game, but was still left on the cartridge/disc.
What are your favorites?
Gran Turismo 2 has tons of hidden content and unused things, it's a shame as lots of those things are actually pretty good.

I remember spending quite some time in that dungeon, whacking at shit, before I realized I didn't auto-equip my only gear. I went bare knuckles for no reason. Next time I go I need better mapping hardware, and I want a party, dammit
Fuck yes JON. Shining in the Darkness is great, but I still have to beat the labyrinth proper. Replaying pic related right now. I don't remember it being this easy, but I do remember the soundtrack being this good. It's a shame more of the Hunter Missions weren't Silver Soldier-tier.

still playing HD with PSX
I think I'll just stop for the night after Knee Deep in the Dead
You know those macros that boards make. Like /v/ will have a 'patrician-core' and what have you. I wanna make a 'hard-core' one for /vr/, basically make a list of hard (but fair - mostly anyway) retro games. Games that if you beat you can be considered a decent player of video games. You can include a difficulty setting if you want for a specific game.
Unfortunately I can't shoop so hopefully somebody else will have to take the helm.
So what's it gonna be /vr/? What will be our 'Hard-Core' list? can be across all genres of course

Can someone tell me why Paladin's Quest is so highly praised on the Internet? I mean, maybe I'm just a pleb, but I genuinely don't see what's so unbelievably amazing about this game.
It probably was the first JRPG for a lot of people, which is usually the reason people overrate mediocre games like FFIV or Earthbound
I've never seen much praise for it though, as far as I am concerned people seem to agree it was mediocre at best
>>3329301
I guess maybe it's just hipsters. But there are a weird amount of people and websites on the Internet that talk about how it's just so amazing and unique and such an underappreciated gem and the story and setting are so deceptively deep like omg.
Honestly I think the game seems, like you said, mediocre at best, and the story seems very generic.
>>3329270
Contrary to what legitimate autists will say, people love different. This was "different" (read: new) to a lot of people as >>3329301 said.
When casuals played videogames in ye olden days, they weren't expecting deep stories or varying choices. You just jump/shoot on enemies and get points. The first "complex" game these people come across they will praise heavily as some huge milestone in gaming, which is why "timeless classics" like Earthbound become so overrated.
So yes, it's just people going "Look at this new toy! It's got more buttons than the older toys!" and thinking it's the best game ever.
