How did a series so terrible get so many games?
Why does this shit keep getting reposted? It's not like you can bait with this given the size of the AotD fanbase.
Don't tell me you watched the entire 32 minutes of that video.
How young are you?
Now, Alone in the Dark. This game invented the third person 3D survival horror genre back in 1992.
It was designed by Frederick Raynal who had a great knack for fusing action and adventure elements together in a way that influenced countless games.
I think new players forget that this is an adventure game and try to combat every creature. Combat was never Raynal's strong point and especially with the slow 3D animations.
The game is easy to play. You're searching an old house looking for inventory items. You might encounter a few books and diaries, which you must read as they provide hints as to how to defeat the creatures and unlock all the secrets in the house.
I think it was a revolutionary game for its time and it's been one of my favourites for years. It got so many games because more people agreed with me rather than you.

Then explain its sequels
Getting my ass handed to me at the Junon reactor after Weapon appears. I'm level 50, and some of the normal enemies are one shotting me and its not cool. There's some tentacle guy and some fucker who does a poison one shot kill.
Should I go back and grind or do I need to change tactics? Its like the difficulty curve just spiked insanely
Its after Carry Armor BTW. I just picked up Spirit Lance also.
>>3378052
FF7 is not a very difficult game overall. Try to experiment a little.
>>3378052
But you're overleveled. Your tactics and/or setup must be shit. Protect yourself against poison using the added effect materia
Please can someone explain to me how in the world this game can have such realistic wave sounds on the fucking SNES? I've been going through my playlist and was blown away. Was it this good in the game itself? I can't remember.

By having good samples? Japanese aren't really known for having good samples. Afterall, one of the biggest trademark of the SFC JRPG is a muffled orechestral soundtrack, that only really sounds good in arrangements. The Japanese are rather incompetent sound designers.

The things /vr/ say sometimes, wew lad.
Op, in regards to your question I can think of four off the top of my head and all Jap games.
Actraiser, Super Metroid, Super Castlevania IV and Axelay. Axelay's voice sample "Arms installation is complete. Goodluck." is the crispest, cleanest voice sample on the SNES/SFC.
I missed out on video games in general because of my parents. Not even pirating and emulating games prevented me from being crippled since they would just grab the PC and take it away, sometimes even going as far as getting rid of the Internet service.
Now that I have more liberty to do things, I want to play the classics, even those that I might already know.
What do you suggest?
If you have a pc just download an NES emulator and some of the top games. NES is a good place to start.
>>3378075
Thanks.
>>3377892
I'd recommend to start from playing Super Mario Bros 1, 3, Super Mario World and Super Mario 64. The reason is, they shaped the video games as a whole and inspired millions of other stuff.
Same with Dragon Quest for Japanese RPG. Final Fantasy, etc. copy Dragon Quest almost to a T in terms of gameplay.
Now the rest depends on which games you like. Definitely play the following to have at least an idea of different genres and what people when they talk about:
NES:
—Contra (side-scrolling shooter/platformer)
—Double Dragon I/II (beat'em up)
—Megaman 2/3 (platformer with some elements of a side–scrolling shooter)
—Castlevania 1/3 (platformer)
—Gradius (side-scrolling space shooter/SHMUP)
SNES:
—Street Fighter II (2D fighting)
—Super Metroid (platformer/adventure)
Genesis:
—Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (platformer)
GameBoy Color:
—Pokemon (turn-based tactics/RPG)
Playstation:
—Tekken 3 (3D fighting)
PC:
—Doom, Quake (first-person shooters)
—Civilization (turn-based strategy)
—Diablo II (Rough-like RPG/hack'n'slash)
These are just from the top of my head. Why these exactly? Most of these particular games pretty much inspired whole genres/herds of clones. They are the originals which set the blueprints for years to come. You've played one of them—you've played the whole genre.
Or at the very least they have been immensely popular/sold gazillions of copies.
How come Nintendo dropped out of the arcade scene? They made some pretty great arcade games.
It stopped being profitable.
>>3377742
>games that have infinite replay value that you pay-to-play
>not profitable
>>3377747
if no one is paying to play then it's not profitable
Hey guys I'm trying to remember the name of a PC game that I played in the late 90's. In the game you would fly from planet to planet or to an asteroid and you would collect the minerals or other resources. I know my description is vague but I can answer any questions to the best of my ability.
Pic not related.
>>3377739
You are the man. I had it on the genesis when i was too young to understand english enough. Picked it up again a few years later and man it was awesome. Still is.
And its fun to see how many games got their inspiration from it. (More like copied stuff)
Its propably why I'm still looking forward to Too many skies. Despite the warnings.
>>3377739
wow i think thats it, ive been looking for years, thanks
What was his obsession with chili dogs?
It was a joke made by the American cartoonists as a sly reference to Sonic Drive-in, who are well known for their chili dogs.
>>3377656
i like how he just has a bag of em
Because you gotta be HOTDOG instead of a weenie like the competition
>gold layer phthalocyanine CD-Rs ranked with higher stability than standard pressed CDs
What did he mean by this?
>>3377634
He meant he's a gullible turd brain who buys taiyo juden on ebay and burns at 1x speed.
What happened to Sim Cities 2 through 1999?
they didnt wanna be retro
They didn't build so good
>>3377376
Better question: what happened to Simfarm 2000?
Is there a Playstation model that has both the parallel port for PSIO and the better RGB-output that the later models have? Preferably a Japanese unit, if you live in Europe they're cheaper to get than American counterparts for shipping reasons.
No.
All Playstations have the same quality of RGB output. Don't let Nintenfags tell you that there is a 1CHIP thing going on with all the different ps1 board revisions. There just isn't
>PSIO
Is this thing worth getting yet? In theory I want one but as far as accuracy goes it sounds about as reliable as running scene rips from 1998 on PCSX. Are they improving it at all?
Why is it that so many retro game ROMs have a last modified date of December 24th 1996 at exactly 11:32 PM? Even games released after that date?
>>3376861
Because anything after that isn't retro
>>3376861
old date format? y2k was real
>>3376861
Probably somebody using an older computer to create the rom files that's clock and date were off. A lot of ROMS come from the same few groups so it would make sense.
What are some classic games that envelope you in a world of whimsy, magic, and wonder?
I've tried Zelda and I know it's the premiere name for this kind of thing, but it just didn't do much for me, the world and characters all felt kind of...bland, or stock
>>3376839
Zelda is supposed to be player inserty that's why Link doesn't talk.
If you are looking for a more recent game try Golden Sun and Lost Age
Generally for that world of magic feeling you should try digging through old school JRPGs and see what catches you. Older FF titles (never my cup of tea personally, Dragon Quest series, could always try Ys as well.
Legend of Mana
SaGa Frontier 2
SMT
Monster Rancher 2
Klonoa
Secret of Mana
Earthbound
Wild Arms
Shining Force 2
Terranigma
Daggerfall
Rudra no Hihou
Chrono Cross
Alundra
LSD
King's Field
Threads of Fate(sequel never ever)
Ys
Beyond the Beyond is generic and boring but I like it
Tactics Ogre is depressing but I also like that one
Live-A-Live
Skies of Arcadia

Willow on NES is exactly what you're looking for. Based on a fantasy film by George Lucas, it's an action rpg that's really impressive for 8-bit. Check it out!
I've put it off for as long as I could, but my NES - and soon enough my SNES - game collection has outgrown my space for it and I need to buy a new shelving unit.
Anyone got any recommendations for specific brands/models? I want as snug as fit as possible so I don't want something that looks like the pic I've posted here. Also my basement's wall space is at a bit of a premium so Ideally I'd like a more narrow-but-tall shelf that's about 2 feet wide.
A lot of empty space between those shelves... you could get some more shelves to put in your current unit. That's what I did with mine, got the extra shelves and plugs off ebay.
>>3376718
Dude, it's not my photo. It's just something I grabbed off the internet.
Get accustomed to cutting tools, screws, wood and home depot then build to your own preferences. If you want anything half decent don't be a lazy fuck, take measurements. Pic related, my perfect hand-built setup for my autism.
While Dick Tracy and Who Framed Roger Rabbit certainly aren't among the best NES games I like way they play or at least the general idea of driving around in town, going in buildings to search for items needed to enter other places and clues to solve the case you working on.
Are these any other games that play in this manner? I really dig this concept but can't really think of other games that play in this manner apart from level 3 in TMNT.
>>3376662
I just tried Mission Impossible on the NES and so
far you have to do similar things except instead of driving you walk. Maybe you drive later, I'm not sure yet. It's fun so far.
I'll give this thread one shameful bump before I let get 404'd.
>>3376669
Mission Impossible is a good, challenging game and does indeed feature one driving stage and one skiing level however these are of auto-scrolling variety and not the kind you drive around searching for things.
I actually enjoyed Dick Tracy. The only issue I had was with the car chases, because it ends up being an HP check and could have used a smarter mechanic.
Im about to start this game
what should I know, /vr/?
