Favorite multiplayer turn based games? I had a lot of fun with Top Shop & Battle Hunter even though BH was FRUSTRATING AS FUCK. What turn based games did you play with your friends?

I skipped out on work to stay at my friend's house one afternoon to play Battle Hunter. I didn't regret it. We had a multitap and everything, though we later found out it wasn't required.

Battle Hunter and Top Shop were a tremendous value when they released. They were $9.99 brand new and well worth it provided you had friends.

>Battle Hunter
Underrated game, a shame there's not a lot to do in its singleplayer mode, admittedly, the multiplayer is where most of the fun is.
Great little game for a super budget title though, the sprites aren't even that bad.

BOARD GAME TOP SHOP IS RAD. just make sure you have 2 players but its still fun to play alone.

What are some strong examples of certain era's of gaming (or individual hardware, including arcade) that had a unique look? We're all familiar with pixel graphics, early 3D gaming and the like but what about more specific, harder to quantify examples like the difference between the N64 or Playstation? or the 2600/Colecovision/Intellivision?

Japanese retro PC gaming is beloved for its high quality pixel art, Apple II era games have this weird color palette and N64 games have often been described as having an unintentional surreal effect. Even more obscure examples like a game played on a TI-93 calculator or a Tiger Handheld have a unique look with a certain primitive charm.

What are some of your favorite examples and why? Also retro graphics in general I suppose.

>harder to quantify examples like the difference between the N64 or Playstation?
They aren't hard to quantify.
> the 2600/Colecovision/Intellivision
It's not hard to tell exactly what's this console among them too.
>>
What many might not know is that the PS1's colour-space is not uniform like the RGB of other systems. The brightness levels ramp up very quickly at the low end -- this was done so that on CRTs there wouldn't be a thousand different shades of colours that all appeared just black. This is partly what gives the PSX its unique look and why, for example, Gran Turismo for the PSX is far more saturated and characteristic than say, the PSP's own Gran Turismo, where the full 24-bit RGB colour range gives a terribly dull and bland appearance.
>>
>>3384186
>or the 2600/Colecovision/Intellivision?

There was a huge difference. Coleco and Intellivision were closer to the NES, they were like gen 2.5, Atari had far inferior graphics, but it was also released many years earlier.

a friend of mine recently revealed a cut scene ive never scene before in Chrono trigger, which wouldn't be a big deal but after looking into it we haven't been able to find ANY information on this scene.

he made a video explaining how to get this scene and showing ioff the scene itself.

maybe you guys know something that we dont?

Final Fantasy IX on PS1.

>>
>come to thread expecting FFVI wankery

Fuck. Times are a changing. Are we not just constantly circlejerking FFVI any time Final Fantasy comes up?

Anyway, OP, if you're just looking for good story skip X-2 (decent mechanics, terrible story, pretty dresses). Compilation of FFVII has some good side games (I actually liked Crisis Core, despite it's massive flaws, for example), and IX is justifiably classic.

How do you feel about the difficulty of retro games?

One thing I hear many people who enjoy retro games are that they are more difficult. What do you think makes good difficulty? Do you think something like a fighting game has a higher difficulty then a "normal" difficult game? What would you say makes a game "unfair"? What game would you say has the perfect difficulty?

>How do you feel about the difficulty of retro games?
indifferent

>One thing I hear many people who enjoy retro games are that they are more difficult
they're bullshitting. There's a distinct difference between old and new games, but difficulty is not it.

>What do you think makes good difficulty?
fairness. The computer can be subject to a different ruleset, for AI purposes, but they need to be fair and consistent

>Do you think something like a fighting game has a higher difficulty then a "normal" difficult game?
what's a normal game?

>What would you say makes a game "unfair"?
Aspects playing on the difficulty of the input, and the computer being able to bypass obvious rules, especially in games where the computer is supposed to be a peer.

>What game would you say has the perfect difficulty?
no such game, largely because there's no perfect difficulty to begin with. There are excellent games that aren't difficult at all, and they work in part because of that; and there are games that will chew you up and spit you out, and they're awesome for it. What matters is that the whole thing is consistent about it.
>>
>>3383476
The thing about retro games is that many of them don't have a save feature, or the system's scope limits how much content the game would have to be.

Many titles work around this by severely punishing the player, often forcing them to restart the entire game, to pad out how long it would take them to finish it. Arcade games are also designed to squeeze money out of the player, hence their tendency to have the player frequently killed.

Another thing is when an arcade game is ported to a system with the coin-milking difficulty intact. In an arcade you would typically have as many attempts at the game you would be willing to spend money on. If you have that same game on, say, the NES? That luxury is gone. You only have whatever continues the game hands you.

Nowadays with how powerful systems have become and the ability to save your progress being an expected, essentially crucial feature, many games have become more forgiving. This is because they can provide you with a lengthy, time-investing experience not through repetition, but by simply taking a long time to complete.

Compare Super Mario 3D World to Super Mario Bros.

3D World is easy as piss but still takes a very long time to 100% because there's so many levels and so many green stars. Meanwhile a child back in the day may have taken a roughly similar amount of time to beat SMB1, because of the amount of practice it would take to properly beat the game in one sitting without warps or cheats.

This change in focus over the years makes older games seem far more difficult, almost "unfair", to new players.
>>
>>3383535
>Do you think something like a fighting game has a higher difficulty then a "normal" difficult game?
>what's a normal game?

This. What do you consider normal? Fighters are a specific case though since they're really designed to be played in multiplayer and the single player modes don't do the games justice.

Also perfect difficulty will always vary with individual players because different people won't all respond the same to any given challenge.

The games shouldn't be over 10-20 bucks.

They are not uncommon. They're really common, except maybe Yellow and Crystal which are more rare.

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories
