>immerse yourself in the period of time the game was released
>game becomes a thousand times more enjoyable
does anyone else do this
yeah when i play retro games i turn my cap around
The activision anthology did this so well with its UI and contemporary music selection
Time is but an illusion. You're already immersed and plasmated in the past. If you actually were alive and conscious enough to remember back then.
Just bought two sega saturn controllers. Why does one have a purple C button and the other a blue C button?
>>3399765
It's simple: because you masturbate too much.
You should ask yourself why one has a grey cable and one has a black cable.
Try measuring the length in metric and imperial.

Is there some kind of trick to these stages? I've been playing this game for over 29 goddamn years and I still can't get past more than 2 or 3
>>3398840
Typo, meant *20 years
>>3398840
Memorizing ring placement helps, but one of the big problems is the existence of Tails. If you're playing single player, you either want to be careful that his delayed movement doesn't result in him crashing into a bomb, or you should disable him altogether.
It's also a bit easier to collect the rings if you have someone competent pick up the second controller for the special stages.
>>3398840
Yeah, play the iOS or Android remakes. The Genny versions have shitty pre-rendered obstacles that don't come into view until it's too late.
Video of special stages in the superior Android remake here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oU-3wd5KZz0
My actually autistic big brother used to play the original prince of persia religiously when we were kids, and since he was feeling sad or depressed (it's hard to tell sometimes) I hooked up prince of persia 2 for him a few weeks ago (this is like, 15 years later) , he didn't even know there was a sequel.
So, now that he's beaten that and is still a little down in the dumps, I'm looking for something similar I could get him, any recommendations?
There can't be reading required since he doesn't speak or understand english at all.
I'm not that familiar with old PoP games but I guess that level of puzzles is about his limit, he fucking slaved over PoP 2.
>>3398624
Idk mang can't think of anything. Maybe the newer PS2 pop games? I know they're radically different to the originals but maybe he'll still appreciate them.
>>3398638
like the sands of time or w/e they're called?
I don't know I don't think it's so much the setting/story/atmosphere he likes but rather the mechanics or simplistic gameplay.
I also don't know how he'd handle 3D games at all. Thanks though.
I know he kinda liked heretic, but not doom for some reason, I don't know if that gives anyone any ideas.
Blackthorne
there's some in-game instructions in english but you can probably work it out on your own
I was wondering what the best all-in-one option is for playing nes, snes and genesis. My options are a retro 3 style system with flash carts or using a Wii and loading it with emulators. Which setup would play these games the best?
>>3398601
A Wii for sure. A clone is a clone, its firecore will always have shit sound. With a modded Wii you have regular updates to the emulation, you get way more systems, you get the ability to play the whole library not just the games from your collection you get the capacity to do progressive scan output easily if you want to use a progressive scan display. Literally the only thing a clone like that has going for it is the plug-and-play simplicity. Even the controllers can easily be used on a Wii with an inexpensive adapter plus many more like keyboards to play retro computer games which is something I discovered is great to do on Wii.
Wii sucks for emulation, shouldn't be surprising giving that it was underpowered when it came out. You want the extra power only a x86 computer can offer.
>>3398601
Clones.
Emulators are all flawed.
Are SNES reproduction carts 100% accurate recreations of original hardware in regards to games with unique chipsets? (Megaman X2/X3, Star Ocean, etc.)
Just curious as I've been thinking about using repros as a method of bolstering my library without spending copious amounts of money on rarer games (I'm a wagecuck so I don't have endless amounts of disposable income to work with) but if they don't produce 100% accuracy I might as well be running ZSNES.
So, what's the lowdown? Pic mostly unrelated
>>3398539
Honestly, unless you're a turbo autist, they're as accurate as it's going to get. The only difference I've ever noticed was with a repro copy of Castlevania: Bloodlines having sound like a fifth of an octave too high compared to my real copy. Otherwise in all my comparisons it looks and sounds like the real deal, so go for it.
>>3398545
I'm really only concerned about games with upgraded carts (not counting SuperFX as thats so common its not an issue), I'm not gonna go turbo autist over some extremely slight sound differences but if the framerate or graphics are compromised it pretty much ruins the experience IMO
Any other opinions?
Retro cooperative in this thread
Games you think any and every /vr/ player should experience. Most important games you that are best/better overall when played with player 2, or more.
the game boy ver. RCR EX vr
>>3397976
Agreed on that.
Some other stuff I prefer in coop, that are beat em ups.
Dynamite Cop and Zombie Revenge - Dreamcast.
Dungeons and Dragons: Shadow over Mystara - Steam or Saturn or Arcade.
Armored Warriors - Arcade.
Kirby Super Star. It's especially good to play with casuals because the 2nd player can't die permanently.
also, it's fun as fuck
Which one should I buy /vr/? I'm really after the one that has the most compatibility. Has anyone had any experience with both?
>>3397381
does v3 support animal forest finally?
>>3397381
64drive is more geared for home brew developers. That's where the price premium comes in. If you only want to play games get the Everdrive.
>>3397606
Sincere question: what would the appeal of playing Animal Forest even be, outside of being the most hardcore Animal Crossing fan? Is it even translated?
My understanding is that the entirety of it's content and more are in the [NOT RETRO] port.
My grandfather found a ps1 a few weeks ago and this is my collection so far
What games are absolute must haves that don't have hd remasters?
>tomba! is too much dinero for my blood doe
>New Vegas on a console
>>3397198
Console is fine. Not all of us are perverts who require pony dick mods in all our games.
>>3397176
Your grandpa found a PS1 and this is your collection. These two factoids seem unrelated. Please flesh out this narrative more and help me understand, OP.
why-the-fuck-is-this-not-a-thing edition:
I'm sick of all these fantastic old multi-player games having no players to play with. Where the fuck are the rest of you faggots that used to waste away endless hours playing this shit?
Day of Defeat
Ricochet
The Specialists
Action Half-Life
Firearms
Sven Co-op
Earth Special Forces
Rocket Crowbar
Vampire Slayer
(notable-mention single-player mods):
Paranoia
Half-Quake
The late 90s and early 2000s were unequivocally the prime years of video game modding, when a dedicated team of random boobs working in their spare time could churn out a game that stood on its own, engine aside, on-par with or better than that produced by paid game developers. I know I missed some good ones. What were your favorite hl1 mods?
>>3396796
Sven Co-Op's development is now dead since the lead project manager is literally a webdev that blocks code he doesn't like

What games do you play when you want to relax, /vr/? Pic related is one of my favorites, Super Shangai II - Dragon's Eye on SNES.
My other choices are:
-Tetris Attack
-Columns
-OutRun
-GBC Mario Golf
I'm gonna download these games to the emulator on my phone, see if I can get some comfy relaxation going
thanks anon
my personal favorite is Tetris Battel Gaiden on SNES
>>3396528
You are welcome, anon. If you aren't very familiar with Shangai, is good to search for the rules first.
It isn't complicated, though. Is just a different kind of Solitarie with Mahjong pieces.
>Tetris Battle Gaiden
I've heard of this one but never played it. What are the differences between Gaiden and the original Tetris?
>>3396549
>What are the differences between Gaiden and the original Tetris?
you play against the CPU, similar to battle mode in regular tetris, but you also get special attacks that mess up the other side's board in weird ways
Get on my fukn lvl
Wait.. there was only 6?
Jesus, I must have been so close so many times.
>>3396459
Getting a special stage in Labyrinth Zone is near impossible.
I did this when I was a kid, Sonic 1's special stages are very easy.
old but gold! btw, I agree with the guy in the video
youtube.com/watch?v=NJXIYVhD2zU
Characters mean nothing. They are just portraits in the menu screen. Technology in GTA2 is a visible upgrade while the gameplay is not much different. It's a better experience that's why GTA2 should be suggested instead of the original.
Official objective GTA power rankings:
1. GTA Vice City
2. GTA V
3. GTA = GTA2
5. GTA SA
6. GTA III
*power gap*
7. GTA IV
>>3396306
I honestly didn't like 5. It was big, but it felt so -empty-.
>Dark souls before Dark souls
Why the PSX was so great?
>>3396136
love VS, but severance blade of darkness plays a lot more like dark souls
>we'll never get Vagrant Story 2
it sucks, but considering the state of square enix maybe it's for the best
>>3396136
VS is nothing like Dark Souls, get better bait next time /v/ermin
>Vagrant Story invented Dungeon Crawlers
