Memorizing ring placement helps, but one of the big problems is the existence of Tails. If you're playing single player, you either want to be careful that his delayed movement doesn't result in him crashing into a bomb, or you should disable him altogether.

It's also a bit easier to collect the rings if you have someone competent pick up the second controller for the special stages.

Yeah, play the iOS or Android remakes. The Genny versions have shitty pre-rendered obstacles that don't come into view until it's too late.

I don't know I don't think it's so much the setting/story/atmosphere he likes but rather the mechanics or simplistic gameplay.

I also don't know how he'd handle 3D games at all. Thanks though.

I know he kinda liked heretic, but not doom for some reason, I don't know if that gives anyone any ideas.

A Wii for sure. A clone is a clone, its firecore will always have shit sound. With a modded Wii you have regular updates to the emulation, you get way more systems, you get the ability to play the whole library not just the games from your collection you get the capacity to do progressive scan output easily if you want to use a progressive scan display. Literally the only thing a clone like that has going for it is the plug-and-play simplicity. Even the controllers can easily be used on a Wii with an inexpensive adapter plus many more like keyboards to play retro computer games which is something I discovered is great to do on Wii.

Wii sucks for emulation, shouldn't be surprising giving that it was underpowered when it came out. You want the extra power only a x86 computer can offer.

Honestly, unless you're a turbo autist, they're as accurate as it's going to get. The only difference I've ever noticed was with a repro copy of Castlevania: Bloodlines having sound like a fifth of an octave too high compared to my real copy. Otherwise in all my comparisons it looks and sounds like the real deal, so go for it.

I'm really only concerned about games with upgraded carts (not counting SuperFX as thats so common its not an issue), I'm not gonna go turbo autist over some extremely slight sound differences but if the framerate or graphics are compromised it pretty much ruins the experience IMO

Dynamite Cop and Zombie Revenge - Dreamcast.

Dungeons and Dragons: Shadow over Mystara - Steam or Saturn or Arcade.

Armored Warriors - Arcade.

Kirby Super Star. It's especially good to play with casuals because the 2nd player can't die permanently.

Getting a special stage in Labyrinth Zone is near impossible.

I did this when I was a kid, Sonic 1's special stages are very easy.

Characters mean nothing. They are just portraits in the menu screen. Technology in GTA2 is a visible upgrade while the gameplay is not much different. It's a better experience that's why GTA2 should be suggested instead of the original.
