How do the two compare? I haven't played any Rare N64 platformers yet but I'm curious about Yooka Laylee (which isn't /vr/ so I won't discuss it). My only experience with retro 3D platformers has been Crash (which isn't even full roaming), Spyro, and Mario 64. Spyro 3 was my favorite game as a little kid but I always hear people bragging about Rare more.
How does Spyro compare to Banjo? Which do you prefer?
Spyro's moveset is far more limited than Banjo, and the level design in simpler, IMO
>>3402498
It is. I'm not really a big fan of B&K though, not into collectahons. The only one I played and enjoyed was SM64, if you want to consider it that. Most others are tedious, and 3D platforming is mostly garbage
I'm on the minority of people who actually liked DK64 more than Banjo.
I never liked Banjo too much, although I admit the game is massive and has a very large variety and depth in its controls, but I could never bother to complete it.
I made it to the ice and haunted mansion levels, I guess I'm pretty far in the game, but I lost interest, whereas DK64 I played and completed to 101%.
As a kid I fucking loved Super Mario 64 and Jumping Flash on the PS1. Thought Crash Bandicoot was just OK. Banjo I plain didn't like it, I think I became frustrated with the controls and overall wasn't having fun, so I remember trading it for Pod Racing 64 and it was a good decision.
Oh, and I never played Spyro.
Holy shit, remember those games you played in internet clubs/cafes when you had no PC? Quake 2 & 3, HoMM 2 & 3, CS, Diablo 1 & 2, etc etc
Screaming thro the room: don't watch my monitor!, playing 10 hours straight when truancing school and you parents can't find you, almost sleeping but continuing because night hours are 3 times cheaper. That was the time!
No, my family wasn't poor.

>dialup poorest kid, local multi only all of childhood
>360 launches while in HS, still too poor for Live
>years later finally working, buy live to try out
>mfw I realize online play sucks and multiplayer is only good when you know the other person or are sitting beside them
Think I'm done with Live and it's been less than a month.
>>3401981
No. We always had a PC and I never skipped school.
nothing in the sticky. where do you find retro games at a decent price point? garage sales? goodwill? pawn shops? brick and mortar store in your area? website? is there anywhere to get games in good condition and not get assraped with ebay prices?
>inb4 just emulate
i enjoy having a physical copy. i'm not a collector fag by any means, but i prefer to own the cart just like when i was a kid.
>>3401483
Ebay. Although I did have a really neat brick and mortar store that was the size of a bedroom but had so many games and old consoles.
Girl in op is cute.
has anyone had any success at goodwill whatsoever? i know mostly all of their stuff goes directly to shopgoodwill auctions, but have you ever left your phone number with the front desk or tried going to your city's local hq? i know where it is in my area, but it's in one of the most dangerous places in the city so i'm hesitant to go try, especially if other peoples success rate is low.

How about a retro ANSI art thread?
Doodoodoodoot doot doodoot doot doot doot doodoodoodoot doot doodoot doot doo

TALK ABOUT BLOOD AND OTHER BUILD ENGINE SHOOTERS IN THIS THREAD THE DOOM THREADS ARE NOT ENOUGH AND WHERE THE FUCK IS MY SOURCE PORT
>>3399903
source port never
god bless atari
Blood was cool but then I finished it.
Not enough modding options for it to have much of a community I guess. A couple of custom mapsets, but no easily available editors as far as I can tell, and you gotta run it in dosbox...
>>3399912
>Not enough modding options for it to have much of a community I guess.
This has nothing to do with it. You can do a LOT more with Blood than with Doom.
>and you gotta run it in dosbox..
What is this, /vr/ or /v/ ?
Will we ever see Sketch Turner again?
I seen him yesterday
Let's be honest here, Comix Zone is the only excellent game STI ever made, all the rest are either "okay", or interesting on a tech level or just a little annoying.
STI should really have stuck to the Comix Zone franchise until they learned how to ground themselves a bit in terms of game design, or just continue sticking to developing tech / providing support for other SEGA studios.Sonic X-Treme was going to be a mess as well, you better believe it

Lol
So the latest version (3.6) was released last December, but NetHack is still retro, right?
Can we have a thread dedicated to how great this game is?
Everybody I know refuses to play this game. They dismiss it as too difficult, or claim it has shitty graphics (even with tilesets).

Time to rob this store blind.
Nethack is an alright game, but it's archaic for archaic's sake. Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is a much better iteration of the roguelike genre.
I used to play Nethack, and loved Castle of the Winds as a kid, but it just isn't as good now that we have better alternatives.
>>3397345
Stole a bunch of spellbooks from the shop. As I was reading them, my kitten started fighting a gnome lord and got itself killed. Charmed the gnome lord and made him my new slave.
>>3397481
Stone Soup is good, too. I also like Linley's Dungeon Crawl, especially since Stone Soup doesn't run well on old machines.
Why was Oddjob so short in Goldeneye? He was tall in the Goldfinger movie.
It seems likely that he was confused with the actually diminutive Nick Nack from The Man with the Golden Gun.
>>3396381
You might say his height is quite odd
>>3396384
That makes sense.
Let's gripe about shit things in good games.
What the fuck is up with the inconsistent design in SMB3's Giant Land? Some elements have thick blocky pixel lines (clouds, ground, underwater reefs), while others are re-designed with thin lines (pipes, enemies, hills). This shit has bugged me forever.
>>3395486
That was the best fire flower colourscheme. I wish it didn't disappear.

>Some elements have thick blocky pixel lines (clouds, ground, underwater reefs), while others are re-designed with thin lines (pipes, enemies, hills). This shit has bugged me forever.
It bugs me more that the giant koopas and hammer bros. look like fat disproportionate versions of the regular foes.
And then the giant paratroopas have tiny regular koopa-sized wings and they just look weird
>>3395676
also
>giant land
>giant lakitu clouds in the background
>lakitu comes out regular sized in a regular sized cloud
Cheep cheeps also come out regular sized (which is CRIMINAL considering there's a giant fish, the boss bass, in the game), and none of the castle enemies or the airship come out giant
Even the king and his toad isn't giant.
It's like holy shit nintendo, let's have a little consistency!
Who's your favorite retro games-centric personality, /vr/?
>>3393203
Arino is cool in a "dad that's into retro games" kind of way.
Mark is based and has some great taste. A little too "memey" in recent years, but I enjoy his laid back review style so I'm not that bothered by it.
James has some shit taste in games and I wouldn't even call him a "games-centric" personality.
>>3393235
>James has some shit taste in games
Just because he has an average taste doesn't mean that he has shit taste.
I agree about Mark, love his reviews.
Arino is not even in the same category, he was a comedy actor before GameCenter CX came around.
>>3393235
>Arino is cool in a "dad that's into retro games" kind of way
Yes.
>but I enjoy his laid back review style so I'm not that bothered by it
His reviews are pure dogshit, I wouldn't even call them reviews.
>James has some shit taste in games and I wouldn't even call him a "games-centric" personality.
Sure his taste is generic as hell, but it's not bad by any means.
Post your favorite unconventional set up.

>Skeleton in the background
There is literally NOTHING wrong with Dan. If you learn how to use him he can be just as good as Ken/Ryu.
I feel the same way about Lilith in Vampire Savior.
>>3378768
Dan is literally a joke character meant only to shame your opponents. He's as shitty as they come but completely on purpose. Trying to compently use Dan is a waste of time.
>>3378785
Lilith isn't a joke character like Dan though, just not as good as most other characters in VS. Learning her is not recommended but she is playable and some players have made her worked.
>>3378812
There are people who use Dan professionally in tournaments. In the newer games especially they made him pretty good.
I just bought a CRT and it has a couple of problems that I don't know how to fix. The most obvious one being that the image is slightly titled clockwise. There's also some weird distortion going on in places and artifacts near pixels (but I think the latter may be because I'm using composite).
distortion
artifacts
>>3406469
The geometry is fucked. Google the model number and see if you can find a service manual pdf for your CRT. Look through it and find how to access the service menu. Write down the linearity and geometry settings BEFORE you fuck with them, then fuck with them until things look right. If you can't find out how to get to the service menu, then the only other option is to open your crt up and do it manually, but this is dangerous as fuck.
This should fix the image being titled and the distortions. Artifacts are probably because you're using composhit.
Is this game broken?
I mean, you can easily break windows at town to get easy money and buy lots of spells and potions, and the game is now a walk in the park.
>>3406403
>I mean, you can easily break windows at town to get easy money and buy lots of spells and potions, and the game is now a walk in the park.
Ok, then don't. If you're trying to make a serious complaint, then that's like asking if every retro game is broken because you can emulate it and use save states.
>>3406409
It's still a flaw though
What's the point of smashing those skulls at those shops or defeating enemies when you can't get unlimited money?
>>3406403
IIRC, money/potions/spells aren't saved in the passwords, so you would have to grind for that stuff each time you started playing.
If you're emulating the game now and using save states instead of the passwords, you might think the easy access to potions could break the game. The game is much harder near the true ending if you collect 100% of the items, especially the post game boss.
