I'm heading to Japan in a couple of weeks and am hoping to pick up one of these bad boys over there for a decent price.
I was hoping some of you could also recommend some cool Japanese games I could grab too that are possible to play without actually speaking Japanese. Obviously I'm keen to get Rhythm Tengoku and some of the Bit Generations games... I've heard of Starfy a lot too... but what are some others I should keep an eye out for?

Not /vr/ matey. Try reading the rules and heading over to /v/
Good boy.

GBA isn't /vr/?
Huh.. ok.

>This board is for the discussion of classic, or "retro" games. Retro gaming means consoles, computer games, arcade games (including pinball) and any other forms of video games on platforms launched in 1999 and earlier. With the release of the 8th generation of consoles, the Sega Dreamcast will now be considered "retro", though the remainder of the sixth generation (Xbox, PS2, GameCube) will not.

Gamecube or Dreamcast.
N64 is great too.
Remake will be the best in the end.

Or it will the worst thing on the face of the planet
Sup /vr/? I dreamt with a song some days ago and I was finally able to make it out on Guitar Pro. I'm sure my mind didn't make it up while I was sleeping so I asked around with some of my friends and a lot of them said they recalled it from some retro game and some even pointed specifically towards the Sonic saga but none of them can remember what level it's from. Could any of you recognize it? https://soundcloud.com/user-421404603/weird-song
the intro to Enter Sandman?
>>3436968
It does sound kind of similar, but this is the first I ever hear of that song.
>>3436978
are you sure it's even from a game? Cuz I could see it being some 90s Metalcore
Are you totally old school? https://play.nintendo.com/activities/quizzes/old-school-vs-new-school-video-game-trivia-quiz/
>>3436475
>nintendo website automatically assumes its a kid doing the quiz
we don't even have to try
What a great quiz!
Did this game get any kind of spiritual sequel?
I really liked this game. I love how it gradually tricks you into playing an RTS game too.
Very fun. Anything else in it's style of FPS/RTS gameplay?
looked up some gameplay video, how is it RTSesque?
Brutal Legend
>>3436741
At no point is that game even close to an FPS
Its a popular opinion to consider Sonic 2 a masterpiece. Does /vr/ think it lives up to the hype? Please discuss
Best sprites in the series.
All zones and music are just class A shit.
>>3436460
The second zone seems like u just spindash and watch sonic go for a while but thats forgiveable.
2 player vs. Mode is dank
Best bonus stages imo
>>3436460
>Best sprites in the series.
Sonic looks good in most poses, I don't deny that, but the revolving sprites are painful to look at. Sonic 3 has much far better rate of quality with its sprites, and the style is also spot on.Sonic CD has the best sprites though.
>All zones and music are just class A
Ehhhh.
>>3436471
>Best bonus stages imo
That's S3&K, could spend days on Blue Sphere.
Ahead of his time, confirm or deny?
>using overlays to replace graphics and gameplay that amounts to playing pretend on a TV screen
>wood panneling
lol fucking 70's was retarded
Deny, overlays are a gimmick. Besides what was this ahead off? Giving people a lesser system?
>>3436547
Letting tech advance enough to actually program video elements.
You get $1 billion instantly and tax free on one condition...
You have to play Hong Kong 97 for 1 hour every day or you die.
Would you do it, /vr/?
Thread music: https://youtu.be/MtYF_9e2azE
A billion would be more than enough to live happily and playing one game for an hour a day is nothing compared to 8+ hours a day at a shit job.
>>3436091
Does it count if I rupture both of my eardrums so I can never hear again? If so, sure.

What are some good pre-rendered 2d games?
Abe's Oddysee/Exoddus

Anyone remember seeing this video almost 10 years ago? boy where does time even go!!
It's still funny after all this time
>>3435978
supposedly the guy narrating isn't even playing
He's just reacting to a chink speedrunner recording
>>3435997
Yeah I figured since there were some moonrunes in a watermark over the video, still good tho
>-AIZ ends with the player falling down, into HCZ; which ends with the player being splashed up, into MGZ; which includes a climactic, ariel boss battle that ends with the player being lowered down, into CNZ; which ends with the player being shot out of a cannon, high up into the mountain tops of ICZ; which ends with the player burrowing a tunnel in the snow, falling down into LBZ; which ends with the player riding some falling launch debris and ultimately plummeting down, into MHZ; which ends with the player hitching a ride upwards, into the airship that is FBZ; which ends with the player bailing out, and down in the desert, SOZ; which ends with the player following a hidden passage leading deep down underground, into LRZ; which technically consists of the following zone, HPZ, which ends with the player falling down a shaft and then immediately entering a teleporter that beams them up, into the high heavens of the island, SSZ; which ends with the player racing up a rapidly deteriorating pillar and leaping aboard the ascending DEZ; which ends either with the player riding the Tornado back down to the surface -- or, if all chaos emeralds are unlocked, transforming into hyper form and continuing the pursuit up into outer space, DDZ; which ends with the player -- once again -- flying back down to land.
I think it's interesting that S3K handled level transitions in this "up, down, up, down, etc," kind of way. Compare that to pretty much any other platformer/racing game of the era, say Mario for instance -- where going from World 1-1 to World 1-2 is a relatively unremarkable event involving little more than the protagonist proceeding along a straight path from left to right and then onto an overworld map -- and it becomes clear how far ahead of its time Sonic 3 and Knuckles was in 1994.
What other games did something unusual or uncommon for their time? What are some examples of eccentric design from your favorite retro games? Also feel free to discuss retrogame design
>>3435443
>Mario's stage transitions are unremarkable
There's a fucking day/night cycle to the level progression, fuck you.
Also, didn't you make this thread a week ago? While I think stage transitions are cool, nobody wanted to talk about it then.
>>3435443
Cancerous fandoms always read some hidden meanings into everything. And there are always thousands of retards who will eat it up and like and share that shit.
It usually only applies to TV shows with their hordes of braindead fans on Tumblr, but Sonic is perhaps the only vidya that narrows their cancer level.
>>3435473
I love seeing day/night transitions in games that aren't RPG's.
I mean, I like seeing them in RPG's too, but there it's kind of expected.
I finally did it, /vr/. I went through all 8 worlds and saved Peach-hime.
Well what are you waiting for?

I did. Then I quit after a few seconds because fuck doing it again for Peach's amusement.

I did a curated selection of NoIntro roms for NES, SNES and Genesis.
My criteria was basically games i've played, games i remembered reading of seeing back in the day, or games featuring prominently on web lists or youtube reviewed a lot.
Also did a list of translated games (mostly RPGs)
what i want to do is to share this list and compare it with /vr/ so u guys tell me about any other good games i could be missing in the 3 platforms.

With the remake on the horizon, was it really as bad as the e-celebs say?
>>3435153
>remake on the horizon
wat
There's a reason it was in bargain bins and cheap as fuck even when it came out. It was one of those games that your parents would pick up when they were shopping "oh a super cheap game, let's get it for Anon!"
These days it's only worth playing through for laughs. Somehow the Genesis version managed to be better, believe it or not, but it's still not good.
One thing with the game stuck with me though, that's the theme where you fight the mummy fucker, once in a while I get it stuck in my head.
>>3435171
Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn. Apparently it was a huge crowdfunding success. I have mixed feelings about this.
Why do pre-common 3D games look more realistic than later fully 3D-rendered games?
My guess is that back before 3D, devs/artists actually used their brains when deciding the direction for graphics.
Then 3D meme landed, everyone suddenly decided that Lara Croft was legit fap material, and came to the consensus that if a game was sprite-based it sucked by definition and the devs were sore losers who didn't have enough sex. Polygon count became an actual marketing buzzword, and everyone bought into it.
Also I read that when SNK tried to release their fighting games on some 6th gen consoles (IIRC), they weren't allowed to do that without adding 3D elements. That could be wrong, but still the desire to shove 3D everywhere with and without need was apparent.
Never mind that in many cases, 3D on PS looked simply awful. Sprites were simply axed to keep up with the latest marketing trends.

If you're serious about, you can find quite a few of those online easily. I remember undergroundgamer had a lot but nowadays I find more of them on soulseek,dc++,etc type of networks.
