Best ways you have found to enjoy your retro. Emulation or otherwise.
I have a ss/n64/ps usb adapter.
>>3467240
how are the max controllers anyway? been thinking about getting one.
>>3467265
It's good for the somewhat better comfort holding it but the circle D-pad thing is kinda weird to use. Make sure if you buy one, clean it out as there could be dirt that causes it to stick.
Out of all the consoles that came out between the Atari 2600 and the NES, do any of them still have a library worth playing?
This includes the Intellivision, Colecovision, 5200, 7800, SG-1000, Vetrex, and Arcadia 2001. Maybe there's more. I hope there isn't..
I don't know what you consider worth playing.
There are games I can enjoy at least.
I'd suggest you'd grab yourself an emulator and a game set and try them out. Nearly all games can be understood within minutes.
The Vectrex is an exception because the vector screen can't be emulated.
>>3467175
7800 and coleco have a few decent games
>>3467206
>The Vectrex is an exception because the vector screen can't be emulated.
You still can try games to get impressed how games would look on the vector display.
How did they do it?
>>3466878
because build wasn't a 2d engine disguised as a 3d engine, it was actually a 3d engine.
You wanna know the difference between Silverman and Carmack?
Carmack is working on gimmick VR shit for Facebook and Silverman is a lead developer making the first commercially available and viable volumetric display.
Did Dark Forces have room over room? I remember it feeling much more 3D than Doom, but I can't think of a great example.
>>3466945
I dont think so, just amazing level design that fools you

these seem to last forever on digital watcher, probably for the same reason they do on PC.
What are some /retro/ MMOs that still run to this day?
The original ROGUE is still going, and project 1999 has been somewhat true to the older everquest experience. Are there any you still lurk? MUDs, browser based, flash or otherwise?
ULTIMA ONLINE ?
i never played OSI always freeshard from time to time, theres still fun in it,
but im just curious, how is osi still populated and is it playable? as in, can you get in and be able to do anything or will you just be grabbing change money from monsters while the economy has gone to impossible levels of inflation?
MUD1 is still online.
>>3467248
Imagine how much money this motherfucker would have if he patented the idea of online gameplay.
If I had, like, a thousand and five hundred dollars I'd like to hire /vr/ to translate Quiz Nanairo dreams.
Rather, I should ask. How much money is needed for translation projects like that?
>>3466629
I'll do it for a Quarter Pounder and a handy-j.
>>3466629
Considering it's a dating sim, I assume it has a fair bit of text. Not full-length RPG level, but maybe 1/4 of that.
I reached out to a professional localization manager recently regarding a fan translation of Earth Seeker, a Wii RPG. While it's a bit different, he said the job would take around 5-7 thousand dollars. So figure that proportion.
Didn't you see what happened on /a/? Even when people understand the questions they have trouble knowing the answers.
If people really want to play it they should learn the language, the culture and the history.
So I'm looking to sell this. Has a clam shell case, artwork, manual, game. I don't want to be a Jew, but I've seen them go for 30-50 depending on condition. Actually sold listings.
Is this game something people look for? Is $30-50 too Jewish?
>>3466543
Let me reverse Jew-you and offer $5 and you post it for free.
>>3466573
Ok, I'll include a $5 panara bread gift card in the deal
Give ya 3.50 for it
Alright, I've got 5 blanks CDs left, what PS1 games should I get?
>>3466454
Time Crisis and Point Blank
>>3466454
King's Field
King's Field II
King's Field III
Shadow Tower
Jumping Flash

No lightgun senpai
Ok so im planning on playing through pic related blind. How do-able is this? Id rather not sink hours into it just to realise its not possible and/or shit.
Also, Ultima general I guess...
>>3466408
Do you have any of the documentation that came with the original game, such as the manuals and the map? Even if you have all of that, you'll still need to take a lot of notes and learn as you go. It's a complicated game, but it's well worth the effort to complete.
Sprite editing question (I guess this is more /vr/ territory than /gd/)
Does anyone know how to edit this kind of sprite sheets? Basically, there's an enemy in the game that has 3 different colors (and you can see them to the left, given for reference). But the actual animations are all given in magenta color (to the right), to not make duplicates.
How am I supposed to restore the real colors? I tried using "rotate color" in gimp, it was more or less OK but made colors much brighter.
>>3466309
The reason color shifting might not work, is because they probably palette swapped the sprite in-game.
You can use IrfanView to reduce the color depth and extract a custom palette from the variously colored knights, and then apply them to a color shifted copy. That might work. If you're lucky.
>>3466386
Thanks for the suggestion. I assume there might exist a tool to quickly restore the original colors, but I see no references to such a thing anywhere.
>>3466309
That's called palettising. Basically put, an area that gonna have different color variants is given a distinct color that never occures anywhere else on the sprite, usually bright pink, green or cyan.
In the game, a palette is applied, that repalces each shade of that color with whatever you want, keeping the shading in tact.
What you need to do is get an editing software and do the same thing - replace colors according to shading via select/replace color tool that is present in most editors. Note though,m that there is often a replacement threshold that makes the tool to replace not only the selected color, but also any similar color within threshold, so if you want a good result set that threshold to 0.
IDK if there's any automated tool to do that.
What are some retro games with good level editors? Either ones with built in editors, or fan-made level editors for games that didn't come with them.
Supre Mario Word for the Sega Gaguar. It became popular after an editor called "Moon Magic" came out and blew its competition out of the water. It became the most edited game ever since...
Starcraft.
You can find tons of fan made level editors on romhacking.net, it's absolutely crazy.
Mega Man games, Duck Tales, Chip'n'Dales, Tiny Toons Adventure, Adventure of Lolo, etc etc etc
Hey vr/, I'm bored. Recommend me some old school RPGs and tell me why they're good
>>3466206
>>3466206
Might and Magic VI: Mandate of Heaven
Nonlinear open world RPG full of dungeons and interesting environments with a real time and turn based mode you can switch between on the fly.
>>3466527
Kek, retro RPG you can't deny
what are some must have snes games that aren't from nintendo
Sure isn't the OP
If you make blanket requests you will just get blanket responses you may as well get from Google and the like.
>>3465896
This. Everyone has different must have games. I thought the one in OP's was hot trash but he probably liked it.
Hey, /vr/
Wasn't sure if this should go here or /r/, so I'll take a shot here.
I'm looking for an old Flash game that I used to play in my technology class in middle school. Had to be before 2004. The screen was white, and you made contraptions out of black lines, with wheels, axels, propellors, motors, etc.
You could make them very complex, and save them for other people to view/build on/take apart etc.
I've looked everywhere and nothing is turning up... anybody know what this game was??
I have to defend "flash" as a platform any time I want to talk about retro phones so unless you're ready to fight that battle probably /r/ because I don't feel like fighting it for you.
You're thinking of sodaplay.com, it's been long since shut down though
>>3465886
flash and pre-smartphones? what? werent mobile programs written in JAVA?
flash is too much even for today's smartphone, if youy manually download the flash apk from adobe to your android.
if it was sodaplay and no one made a copy, at least try TIM The incredible machine
nice it seems they released a new game in 2001
http://www.theisozone.com/downloads/pc/windows-games/the-incredible-machine-even-more-contraptions/
but even good old TIM3 was challenging enough, im gonna try the new one
We all know that at the end of the day, the games library is king. But what are your favorite video game consoles in terms of hardware only, without taking into account the library? I think mine has to the Game Boy. It wasn't perfect, but it packed everything that really mattered into such an efficient package. In a word, I'd call it "elegant"
>>3465831
Sega CD
>>3465831
3DO (plus the shitcanned M2) were interesting hardware for the time, having an uncommon ARM CPU that's 2x faster than the Mega Drive and built-in S-Video output. Also hardware being manufactured by various companies was kinda unusual.
>>3465831
Really hard to separate the two but I'd say Neo Geo Pocket Color... That buttery joystick, that better than GBC gameplay, that horizontal form factor.
I got one after getting a GBA and still played it more.
