Absolutely love the fantasy / sci fi mix.

its ok if you like basic bare bone RPG's, but you don't level up so fighting enemies doesn't reward you so you need to avoid fighting as much as possible and just find sweet loot that hopefully isn't cursed. your better off playing the first one on nintendo and even that one has its share of problems too.

LttP has:

-Better weapon/items
-Better OST
-Better control
-Better story
-More interesting characters
-Memorable enemies

I feel like it's this that's causing trouble. Not exactly sure, though. I'm an amateur when it comes to circuitry and electronics. I do have experience with a soldering iron, though.

Did you make sure the battery is flipped on the correct side? With the negative facing outward? I made that mistake once.

Though if someone argued it was the Atari 2600 or the Master System (specially the second one), it would be understandable, personally I find the MS library pretty good, meanwhile I have no love for the 2600 because I grew up with the 3rd gen.

Fantasy Zone is a great side scrolling shooter that aside from being the wrong genre, fits your request. One of the few I can think of that lets you go either direction.
