I want to talk about the history of the RPG video game. We all know it began as a simulation of the tabletop RPG experience but I feel discussion beyond that is sparce. How long do you think the genre tied into D&D, when did it become it's own thing, if ever? Is it still linked to the tabletop experience? Is the name "RPG" archaic or does it sill accurately describe the genre? Since RPGs started as a way to abstract things that couldn't be performed in reality of by video games of the time, do you think they are becoming obsolete now that we have the technology to adapt those systems in a more literal, action gameplay manner?

>How long do you think the genre tied into D&D
To this day.
>when did it become it's own thing
Since the first videogame RPG ever created.
>Is it still linked to the tabletop experience?
Arguably, though it depends from case to case.
>Is the name "RPG" archaic or does it sill accurately describe the genre?
RPG is a term that is always used inaccurately in the case of videogames, so I'd argue that even inside the category of RPGs only a handful of games are RPGs in the actual sense of the word, and even so, they're nothing like pen and paper or tabletop RPGs, the closest you get to that might be MUDs, and those are hardly games and more like actual autism simulators for people who don't have the relatively low social skill requirements to LARP or get a campaign going.
>Since RPGs started as a way to abstract things that couldn't be performed in reality of by video games of the time
Take a deep breath and rewrite this sentence so I can understand what you're asking.
>do you think they are becoming obsolete now that we have the technology to adapt those systems in a more literal, action gameplay manner?
Action based genres almost always don't involve roll checks and abstract decisions and commands or reduce them to the bare minimum, so they're even less proper RPGs if you're a purist.

RPGs in the general are gambling games when you're supposed to make a bet of sorts and reap or suffer the consequence, and that is only really just a miinor part of traditional RPGs, give the player more and more control over the actor's actions and you'll further stray from the RPG formula into other genres.
Then again, most videogame called RPGs are far from the original concept of RPG, maybe stuff like Dwarf Fortress might be the closest to the actual concept of RPG, but it's still a far cry, and not retro anyway.

tl;dr: the term RPG is a vague, nebulous category when applied to videogames that nobody can truly define.

>How long do you think the genre tied into D&D, when did it become it's own thing, if ever?

It was it's own thing with Dragon Quest. Even FF which is heavily based on D&D is nothing at all like playing a tabletop game.

In the west things stayed a little closer, but even licensed D&D games were really nothing like playing in a campaign.

> Is it still linked to the tabletop experience?
Only vaguely in theme

>Is the name "RPG" archaic or does it sill accurately describe the genre?

It never accurately described the genre because you're never really roleplaying in any of these games. It just takes it's name from the kind of game it's derived from.

>Since RPGs started as a way to abstract things that couldn't be performed in reality of by video games of the time, do you think they are becoming obsolete now that we have the technology to adapt those systems in a more literal, action gameplay manner?

No because turn based decision making can also be interesting in it's own right. Selecting what you are going to do and then having the outcome based on percentage chances is one of the few ways these games are still similar to RPGs.

Ironically I think RPGs never came as close to simulating tabletop RPGs as Roguelikes did. RPGs are virtually all just pre-written stories that you play through, roguelikes actually have the sense of adventure. To me anyways.
>>
>>3629427
D&D inspired Ultima and Wizardry. They in turn inspired Dragon Quest, which spawned the whole JRPG genre. Ultima is probably the most influential RPG series there is, even if you don't take Underworld and Online.

> Is it still linked to the tabletop experience?
The very concept of exp gaining started there, so in a way yes.

> do you think they are becoming obsolete now that we have the technology to adapt those systems in a more literal, action gameplay manner?
First, that's like saying that chess became obsolete when we got Total War games. They are two vastly different entities. Games don't necessarily strive to capture reality, they can be completely abstract and still be fun—take Tetris or Go.

Second, of course reading realistic descriptions of fights and such feels kinda archaic today. Video games allow you to visualize stuff for more immersion. But as it was said, "There is great potential for more than hacking and slashing in D&D or AD&D; there is the possibility of intrigue, mystery and romance involving both sexes, to the benefit of all characters in a campaign." And frankly, video games don't offer much new in terms of the latter. They just do the same thing movies do, show the picture story. What are you gonna do, press F to fall in love?

Did crpgs back then really take a big team and one year to make? I want to make a crpg in the same vein as older games, but I'll be doing it as a small team. I've made games before so Im not worried about if I can do it. Just whether if it's out of scope unless I put a lot of time into it.

Hi /vr/, how would a newfag go on about the Castlevania franchise? Should I start with the very first Castlevania game, then slowly but steadily play each one chronological?

Only Castlevania games I've played is Symphony of Night and Curse of Darkness, which I loved the fuck out of

Just skip Aria of Sorrow and you're good.
>>
>>3629139
Start with CV3, if you find that too hard or not fun skip to Super CV4. If that doesn't do it for you move on to Circle of the Moon and continue from there.

If CV3 did it for you go back to 1 and then play the classics and move on from there.

If SCV4 did it for you, play Bloodlines and Rondo.

No. Legends 2 is miles better.

Legends 2 and Tron Bonne still hold up, the first game is solid for its time but kind of a chore to play now.

Why do people like these games. They look awkward with shitty cameras, why would anyone play these over any 2d megaman? It just forces the game into 3d, what is 1 good thing.

Where did it all go so wrong for Sega? Was it the decision to keep leaching off the aging hardware of the Genesis with the Sega CD and 32x? Was it the misguided Saturn, with it's cumbersome design, difficulty to program for, and lack of games? Was it the Dreamcast failing to compete with Sony?

inb4
>"buh-but the Saturn did the 2D better than the ps1!"
"buh-but the Saturn had good games in Japan!!"
"buh-but the Dreamcast was a perfectly sound competitor to the ps2!!"
101 posts and 11 images submitted.
>>
32X was a stop gap mistake that cost Sega too much cash. More mistakes on the handling of NA market licenses for the Saturn furthered the trouble. Dreamcast was excellent, but it was far too late by that point.
>>
Cancelling Sonic Extreme, for starters.
>>
I think what killed them more than anything was their poor corporate culture. Different parts of the company wouldn't cooperate or coordinate with each other, and the higher ups would do nothing about it. This also led to people spending way more money than reasonable on their own projects, meaning that decisions were being made that weren't necessarily in the interest of Sega as a whole.

Like when Sega Europe spent a shitload on Dreamcast marketing and could have gotten equivalent exposure for a fraction of the cost if they just hadn't tried to go through FIFA.

Do you like your CRT monitors curved or flat? Which is better for retro gaming?
40 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
I used to prefer flat back when I was a kid, but now I really appreciate rounder ones better, they remind me of arcade cabinets screens.
>>
Curved pretty much in every way except for glare. A curved screen will catch reflections from any light source in the room while flat ones can just be angled away from them and not.
>>
>>3625992
I have this weird ass Polaroid one that has a curved tube but there's a flat pane of glass shielding it. Haven't tried the 240p test suite on it, but I haven't gotten any noticeable distortion out of it, and the screen margins are aligned correctly as well.

I know games don't really age, but I used to play the shit out of PSO back in the dreamcast days, and always considered it in my top 3 grindan games.

But after replaying it on ephinea, I realized how obnoxious the whole having to clear rooms format is and how boring it makes the game, it seems to only truly be fun when someone carries you to higher levels and gets you better gear so you can just fuck around doing w/e you want.

But playing it the long way? Without being carried, holy shit its bad, the grind is intense and most classes are garbage until they get to at least hard mode. You always feel so weak even on normal when everything is piss easy

>But playing it the long way? Without being carried, holy shit its bad, the grind is intense and most classes are garbage until they get to at least hard mode. You always feel so weak even on normal when everything is piss easy

Yeah, it's really not a lot of fun. I've tried to complete it offline on two different occasions, probably accruing 90 hours over both a Gamecube save file and a Dreamcast save file, and I can just never bring myself to finish it. The grind is simply too boring, and particularly to fight Dark Falz the grinding I'd need to do for it just means I always give up.

Despite not really liking it on the Gamecube, I bought it for Dreamcast because, hey, it was $5 for a sealed copy, although this was a few years back now. It's good value for money I suppose, but with a million other better games, both on Dreamcast and MMOs in general, it's not really worth it unless you have a bunch of people to play it with. That rings true for most MMOs, but it's particularly true in PSO's case.
>>
>>3621382
>>3621371

I think you two just don't have the same addictive personality that people like me do.

I still fire up PSO from time to time. Not even to really hunt items anymore. I mostly play an ironman combined with living off the land style.

Also, OP is admittedly shit at the game. Play c-mode and you learn quickly. Or don't. And continue to think the game sucks and is hard.
>>
>>3621559
I don't think the game sucks, and I wouldn't say I'm shit at the game though you can make that inference if you want, but I am pretty seasoned at it, I've played every class to high level and have a high level of experience, I'm just kinda talking about how boring it can be at times, I used to be able to autist grind on this game back in the day, but upon returning to for the first time since the gamecube days, do kinda find that I don't like some of its features the same way I did way back when.

That said I'm still playing it and still enjoy it for the most part, but when you are doing a 2-3 hour session the format kinda grinds on you after awhile as opposed to that "just one more hour" sorta feel it used to give me.

When did it become cool to underrate this game? Just because it's a console game with limited frame rate? That's incredibly stubborn. People need to be reminded that this game hugely innovated and added to the first person genre (and games in general). It's very insulting for PC players to suggest that Half-Life, System Shock 2, Deus Ex, Thief, etc, are the best games ever, but not acknowledging Goldeneye (which admittedly by the developers had direct influence on those games) at all.

Wait, it's cool to hate on GoldenEye now? Smells like bait to me. A lot of people point to it (or Halo) as the start of the explosion of the FPS genre that's everywhere now, tho I'd disagree (Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Marathon, Duke Nukem anyone?). There's no denying that it was insanely popular and is one of the best games on that system. Honestly, for a quick pick-up-and-play party style game, it's even better than Perfect Dark (tho Perfect Dark has a much better storyline and atmosphere).
