>lesser known ports/rereleases of well known games that were significant in their own way
>i.e. who cares if there's a version of Mortal Kombat 2 on Wonder Swan nobody heard of, if it's just a boring version identical to every other release
I'll start with Donkey Kong Land for Game Boy, not only is there a more famous version of DKC on Game Boy Color and it looks like it's displayed on hardware completely incapable of achieving the pre-rendered effect (it looks like blurry screenshots of DKC printed on toilet paper) but also a bunch of bizarre plot points and enemies, clearly show the programmer thought the whole project was a joke.

It really looks like shit.

A friend and I beat this game over one summer. Hard as shit, mainly because as >>3678205 pointed out, the graphics are too busy to be easily interpreted.
There is a reason why LA is praised for its art direction, even if it has simple graphics. CGI != good graphics by default, even though this is what all major publishers were pushing at the time (not devs).
>>3678218
Playing it on the GBC makes it much better, since it can color the sprites and backgrounds separately. +no ghosting
Help me, /vr/. I've been in a coma since 1947 and just woke up. I'm interested in these "video game" things.
What games should I play to have the fullest possible understanding of what video games are as a medium? A short list would be great; perhaps 10 or so. I don't have a lot of time between meeting my great-grandkids and trying to figure out my Eye Phone.
I would also appreciate it if the games show a progression of technology--I'm still learning how these computer things work, so starting simple and working up makes sense to me.
Thank you for helping an old man understand your world.
See if your nurse will play Tennis for Two with you, that's a good starting point.
try the Medal of Honor or early Call of Duty games, I'm sure you could relate
Quake
Resident evil (Remake)
Final fantasy 6
Doom
Roller coaster tycoon
Half life
Mario
crash bandicoot
donkey kong country
Reccomend me some retro gaming blogs that review/talk about obscure stuff
VGJunk.
>>3677915
its not obscure if people are talking about it
>>3677928
What if only one person heard of it?
What does /vr/ think of the South Park games? Are they any good?
I had a lot of fun playing that FPS one on the N64 as a kid.
I don't think I could stomach it for 5 seconds now though.
They were great on the 64. Never played em on PS.
Almost everything before "the stick of truth" was developed independently with no feedback from the creators. The license just went out "make a game, any game, because the network expects a game".
South park had notoriously terrible games even for movie/tv spinoff standards.
How's the PlayStation piracy scene in your country back in the day?
Indonesian here, there's lots of Winning Eleven hacks from our country (pic related - and you thought only South Americans only do that) and there's a group who managed to translate a Harvest Moon game to our language.
UK here.
i dont know anyone who didnt have a chipped ps1 growing up.
everyone had one, and everyone knew a bloke who'd give u a list of games, and charge £5 per game.
i actually had a modded ps2 as well from the same fella, but sold it a while back
We had a couple kids who would rent every game they could from blockbuster, make copies of them, then bring a big cd case full of burned games to school. any game you want for 5 dollars.
I got tons of great games off them till they got suspended and stopped doing it. CD burners were still expensive as hell at the time so I couldn't do it myself.
Southeast USA.
THIS is the TRUE Super Mario Bros sequel, not that silly Doki Doki reskin. Only dumb casuals like that one. If youre a true old school Mario fan you will know this to be true.
>>3677669
If this game is so great, how come I can't beat it?
checkmate
>>3677669
Very good satire. You sound exactly like a 15 year old redditor who believes this meme.
I got pic related and Street Fighter II Champion Edition loads to the title screen but then glitches out. I have a doujindance Duo-R and set the console and the everdrive both to JP mode so could the problem be the rom or a hardware issue? Anybody else have issues using their Turbo Everdrives?
>>3677660
>set the console and the everdrive both to JP mode
i remember hearing issues with turboED on region modded systems.
the everdrive plays all regions. you may have to remove the region mod.
>>3677660
Yeah the region mod is the issue.
I have a toaster and I wanna play the Steam version of this
Can I run it?
Nope. Square-Enix's stuff tends to have shitty optimization even on mobile when newly released.
Requirements are low compared to other recent AAA games, but still pretty high. Emulating can have lower requirements.
>>3677556
>have toaster
>want to play FFVIII Steam edition.
Buy a PS1 version and run it through ePSXe. It'll actually run better than the Steam version.
I personally would rip the discs into iso's for faster loading, but that's just me.
Also; don't pirate it fuckstick. Only kids get to pirate. Those with income should pay their way.
>>3677556
Probably. My pic related has no issues running any psx games on retroarch at 2x speed and a widescreen hack.
Hi vr, I got one of this wishing to play on my, I hookep up to my laptop and the quality is shitty,Im connecting trough the video composite cable, I know is a downgrade but I believe Im missing something, would it improve much if I get the s/video cable to the output?
my laptop doesnt have the s/video ouput it would still be vga quality but I wonder if I get a s/video cable would improve anything.
>>3677465
They're shitty but if you drop your output resolution to 640x480 it'll look a little bit better
>>3677498
Ive done it but wasnt pleased, I guess Im fucked.
Is there something I should it bought instead? Im about to give up and get a used wii.
>>3677524
Framemeister or you can probably hack the drivers for your laptop to make the VGA port output 15khz signals an RGB SDCRT or a component one (with a transcoder) can display. You can learn all about it in the CRT thread but yeah a used Wii should only be like $30 and is way simpler.
>>3677421
Your life.
>>3677421
why post this again with the same title? waht..
What was /vr/s favorite retro console bundle. Mine was pic related but I think the one I got also included Nights into Dreams and the 3D controller.
did the ps1 have many bundles? I can't really remember any.
I wonder how many people actually owned the NES Deluxe Set with R.O.B. and Gyromite. Most people I know, myself included, had the Action Set with the Super Mario/Duck Hunt multi-cart and the red Zapper instead of the original gray model.
>>3677397
I don't think the original PlayStation had any actual pack-in game outside the occasional retail-specific deals. They all came with a sampler disc.
I liked the TurboDuo's bundle. Had Gate of Thunder, Bonk's Adventure, Bonk's Revenge, Bomberman, Ys: Books 1&2, and Ninja Spirit (plus magazine and coupon book towards new games).
>>3677397
The one I had only came with a demo disc and only one controller. The demo disc did introduce me to ESPN ESPN2 Xtreme Games which was great and Wipeout. Got Toshinden off the bat separately with another controller, sure the game doesn't hold up, but it was impressive to me in its day.
>>3677407
I owned the Deluxe Set. The NES launched with that, and Super Mario was not out yet (I think it took what felt like 1 year later for SMB to come out, and it was gotten separately). I used the big box as a table to support the NES. Sadly my NES died, but still my most favorite system.
Is this the most overrated retro dev on here? All their games are just desperate imitations of 1st party Nintendo IP and even half of them chug below 30 frames.
Not at all.
>>3677274
they made donkey kong country yall
>Criticizing framerate
Is this a new meme, because I've been seeing it a lot around here lately. It's such a hindsight criticism. I lived through fifth gen and nobody gave a shit about framerate back then - during 5th gen graphics were king and everything else was secondary,.
Besides Zero, is any of these games going to be translated?are they any good?
They're way too Japanese to get translated.
>>3677263
1 was getting worked on and iirc the translation was done, but the guy doing the hacking lost interest.
>>3677897
Also, Eternal Blue is translated.
How many of you have pic related?
Picked mine up back in 2009 for 150$ and I'm proud of myself for it
You should have spent that money on education. Maybe then you would know that the dollar sign goes before the amount.
I didnt pick one up for like $25 a few years ago and im proud of myself for it.
>>3677209
A vintage toy store by my house had a used one in box for $10. I always debated getting it but I wouldn't know what I'd do with it and assumed they weren't rare. Probably still there.
Why does Nintendo keep pretending this was a good game?
It's fun if you have a friend that's willing to play it with you. It's an absolute blast at parties.
superior nes fighting game
>>3677242
True, but that's not Nintendo developed or NES exclusive.
For a better Nintendo-made fighter, there's this.
