Which is the best of the fifth generation and why?
>>3710909
NEC PC-FX
The PSX, sure the N64 had more amazing games by Nintendo and Rare but the PSX had so much third party support that the sheer number of good games buries the N64.
I still remember the agonizingly slow pace of the release of games on the console forced me to buy Sony's hardware as a kid.
>>3710909
You're forgetting someone OP.
Can we have a Simcity thread?
I'm currently deciding where I can go to relive Simcity 2000. Can't find my CD anymore.
>>3710169
I used to have SC2k SE but I lost the disc too. It had my favorite version which was the windows version. It seems like the only one you can get nowadays is the dos version.
>>3710169
Nothing beats playing SimCity on your SNES while lazing around watching TV. If play the game constantly, you end up doing too much; it's best to let your city ferment.
That being said, a lot of SimCity stopped being as fun when I learned about [spolier]donut blocks, no roads, and that pollution spills off the map and doesn't count.[/spoiler]
I think 2000 was my favorite, although I was too young at the time to fully master it (simple things like forgetting to supply water to my city). I really need to give it another try.
porntipsguzzardo, ftw.
I tried playing SC3000 but Win10 just hates it.
Whenever I tried running a city the game just crashed and the audio was fucked.
After seeing this video, my eyes were opened! Mario 64 may actually be one of the worst marios of all time! I mean, the camera is so terrible right? It can't be because people just suck at moving around in 3D space. Also, mario controlls so slippery! Not at all like how banjo and Kazooie control, even though it uses the exact same engine. And it looks sooo ugly! LOL! What were they thinking in the 1990s! why couldn't it have looked good! 0/10 This Game hasn't aged well. Don't Believe me? Check out the comments on this video, everyone talks about how awful the game is!

I was playing Mario 64 the other day and I was thinking exactly this. I'm not even being ironic.
>>3709486
When a 2D game jumps to 3D it becomes a new franchise. Comparing it to a game like Mario 3 just because the main character is a guy with a red hat is retarded.
Watch out OP, you have a wrong opinion and the janitor will most likely delete your thread for claiming such heresy.
MOTHER OF WARS thread?
What is your favorite in the mother series?
For me
Best story: mother 3
Best character interaction :mother 1
Best combat system:mother 2( the mother 3 guts one feels kinda delayed and the note system is unnecesary)
>>3709373
They are all great. I can't pick a favorite. 1 Has some great moments like singing the melodies for Queen Mary and an awesome sound track.
But they all have really good OSTs. 3 has an absurd amount of music and the music combo system was really unique.
>>3709373
Mother 1 is the best game in the series for me because it is actually a good NES RPG with an open world and little to spoil the fun.
M2/EB comes second. It's nice, but the world is much more fractured. There's no sense of free traveling, and far too many gimmicky features at times. On the other hand, the graphics are an eyecandy, and the combat is a bit more interesting and more interesting IMO.
M3 is not retro territory, but I'll tell a bit about it. From the world/plot building point of view, perhaps it was very advanced. But the combat felt shallow to me, and the world became completely fractured, with all my favorite exploration parts gone near completely. The visual style was also not totally my cup of tea. So it's my least favorite game in the series, but not to say I didn't like it. It just took a very different approach to many things and I'm not sure I liked it.
3>2>1 for me
1 and 3 have the best stories, 2 has the neat mechanic where you instantly kill weak enemies, and I love 3's combo system
>ITT: bizarrely specific /vr/ trends
Remember when so many games lost their shit over mine carts in the 90s?
That scene in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is what sparked it. So iconic.
Btw, Harrison Ford is the only dude I'd go gay for.
they're fun
>>3709170
>then
>"wow what a fantastic reference!"
>now
>"ugh... references, really?"
What changed?
What do you guys think about playing your games on the PS2? In my opinion, its better on the PS2 than on the PS3 since there's no input lag at all. It's the best Sony has gotten to an alternative to playing discs on PS1.
>>3708918
i hear the texture smoothing thing on the ps2 kicks ass
>>3708923
It really does. On PS3 it just blurs the entire screen while on the PS2 it just blurs textures.
>>3708918
Palfag here. Anyone know how to get ps1 imports/burned games working on a ps2 with mcfreeboot?
So Aliexpress has N64 repros now. Why the fuck did it take them so long? I don't think I've ever seen N64 bootlegs until now.
$25 though, Jesus Christ. I'd consider it if they got Pokemon Stadium 2 since it doesn't work on the ED64, but still, damn.
>some are more expensive than their corresponding legitimate cartridges
What did he mean by this?
>>3708652
people are gonna start buying the more expensive ones and flipping them on craigslist
>>3708683
I think that pretty much goes without saying at this point
Out of the NES/FDS Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy games, which are better overall?
I say that DQ has better exploration while FF has better combat.
I feel where you're coming from. FF has better mechanics and the story is grander but DQ is more "comfy" which is hugely important apparently.
Even though the combat was better in FF, its complexity led to many battles lasting much longer which resulted int them feeling sluggish and tedious at times. DQ was much simpler but the combat began and ended much faster which made the combat seem more seamless and did not interrupt the exploration as much. imo.
>>3707998
>>3708028
>>3708057
>Spells in FF are worthless compared to just attacking
>better combat
/vr/ characters with unexplained backstories, just waiting to be explored
you anus
Your virginity.
Sadly it will be left unexplored heh
>>3707889
I used to think that Czar Dragon was just a King Blarg, and they look like that underneath the lava.
Btw I don't like how they changed the neat hippo design for a round blob in Yoshi Island.
Is there some portable emulator of the size of the gb micro?
I would get the micro itself and a flash card but it can't handle snes games.
Dingoo
Xplay/PSPgo is about as small when closed
>>3705540
>Dingoo
I wish I could get one, it's ipossible to buy one.
You could make one yourself with a Raspberry Pi Zero and a 3d printer, if you can get your hands on a Zero and aren't retarded.
So I've seen this mentioned time to time over the years but never really had a chance to start it. Now that I have some vacation coming up, I mean to go through the entire series at some point, however I don't want to burn out.
What would the recommended playing order be as told by a fan of the series?
>>3705476
The NES Metal Max is not worth playing since Returns is so good, unless you want to for historic purposes, in which case you might want to check it out since it's pretty impressive structurally speaking for its time, one of the best NES RPG for sure.
Metal Max 2 also got a superb remake with Metal Max 2: Reloaded on the DS, so again, play it if you want to see how the original was like but the remake is like Returns, it is better than the original in every possible way. Stay away from the GBA port, the resolution is so terrible you can barely read anything, if you want to play the original go SNES or don't go at all.
Metal Max 3 on the DS is also good but MM2:R basically adds all the stuff MM3 introduced plus some rebalancing and other stuff, so I suggest you to play MM3 before it, it's also mostly self contained lore wise so you won't lose anything by playing it before MM2, MM2 ties into the first MM lore wise though and it's also a pretty important part of the general lore.
MM4 is another self contained episode, I haven't played it yet because the fact that it shifted to unique characters instead of generics doesn't tickle my fancy, but I plan to eventually.
Metal Saga on PS2 came during a time the MM team lost the right to the franchise's name so they had to change it but it's a Metal Max, kind of like an alternate universe since it does tie to the first MM but is also not mentioned in other MM games. It is the first Metal Max games with unique characters, which again, doesn't sit right with me, but it's a fine game for all the rest.
Forget about the DS Metal Saga, it blows.
MM games are huge timesinks though, there isn't much to read like most other RPGs but the worlds are massive and there's tons and tons of cities, ruins, quests, different paths which might lead to missing some quests due to the the games' non linear nature, bounties and so on.
Hope you enjoy them, it's my favorite RPG series together with SaGa.
>>3705759
What an impressively comprehensive explanation, anon. Thank you very much for taking the time to explain all of this. I will eventually play the originals (NES for 1 SNES for 2) for historic purposes but I'll do the order
Metal Max: Returns
Metal Max 3
Metal Max 2: Reloaded
Metal Max 4
and Metal Saga
I was actually on the fence of actually committing to starting the series but you've given me the motivation I need. On top of that a time sink is just what would do me well.
>>3705759
Why is MM so underrated if the game provides that much content?
Post yfw you realized this is supposed to be a foot and not a smiley face
???

Nice job adding that extra black pixel to the left of the left eye
IT'S FINALLY HERE

More like a JRPG than action rpg.
Anyone have a DL link? The FDI I got from an old Mega dump doesn't work with the patch.

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!
>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+ Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.
Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

Sorry but i'm French.
Let us play Myth 2: Soulblighter.
Myth 2 is a 1998 real-time tactics game developed by Bungie, sequel to Myth: The Fallen Lords. Myth has great multiplayer and a few campaigns, playable both solo and in coop. It is still supported by a tight community of fans that releases patches and hosts a multiplayer server.
Although it is possible to find and join games on your own, chances are you will get wrecked by players who have been passionately playing the game for years. Therefore, a handful of anons who just want to have some more casual fun have created a steam group to coordinate gaming sessions.
We welcome everyone who wants to join us. Normally we play through campaign missions in coop, but we can play multiplayer as well when we get more people. There are no requirements for the skill level, but learning controls and basics is highly advisable. If you want to participate, you will need the following:
1. Get the base game Myth 2 Soulblighter. As far as I know, you can not buy it anywhere, but finding copy otherwise is not hard (wink wink).
2. Get the latest patch from projectmagma dot net slash downloads slash myth2_181
3. Register an account on gateofstorms dot net – this is the community server
4. Join our steam group steamcommunity dot com slash groups slash myththevidya#
5. Optional: get some campaigns from tain dot totalcodex dot net
Currently we do not have a dedicated time when we play, so just message one of the group moderators when you join.
Or you can just discuss the game I guess.
Bump.
This was my favorite strategy game in high school (unfortunately haven't played in years). My friends and I played so much of the WW2 titans mod. Then the carnage map towards the end of its life (the one with helicopters, artillary, and a ton of tanks and units). Great strategy game

this game was so much fun, but so hard in the later levels
