You expect HD out of a console from the 1989?
You're just as bad as those fag who think Quake ran at 60FPS upon release. Yeah it may have supported it, but no one had the hardware to make it run that fast.
The map system in this game sucks!
>>4206219
What didn't you like about it?
YOU SUCKS
>>4206219
DC2 is so linear that you don't really need the map.
The only time you'll get stuck is when you need to find that keycard in the fucking water.
I'm getting ready to play DKC for the first time. Why does /vr/ hate it so much?
Rare during the golden age
>>4206186
Why did all the KI girls look like apes, anyway?
Nobody hates DKC1, the problem is the platforming is not as solid as 2 and 3.
What the fuck does this quote even mean?
>>4205772
"More substance in FPS games compared to what CS offers."
counterstrike is only one FPS where DosBox supports hundreds of them
It runs smoother than CS
So I got stuck with one of the newest generation of fake NES Classics. Rather than go through all the hassle of opening a dispute, I thought it would be kinda fun to see if it can be hacked and the ROMs replaced or added to.
It actually plays okay for the most part but some of the games seem to be PAL versions (SMB2 for example) and play way too fast. i'd like to swap these problem ROMs out at the very least.
When I plug the USB into a PC it shows up as a removable drive but there is no formatting that I can discover. Properties announces it as an "Actions media-player USB" device.
Any ideas?
How about u try beating the games that came with it first
>>4205776
As I mentioned some of them run too fast.
In any case the included lineup was almost universally panned around here and I like the challenge of turning a bad situation to my advantage.
Just need some helpful advice to make it happen :)

Just picked up this Atari 800 at the flea market today. Anything I need to know before I start messing with it?
Also what's your experience with Atari computers?
>>4205549
Did you know it's the Amigas grandfather?
The old Atari 8-bits are nifty machines.
You can be in the same missed boat as me. Atari 8-bit gamesused to be mingled in with the boatloads of VCS games at the same x-for-$1 prices. I cherry picked a decent collection for my 2600 but never picked up any XE games. Now I have a 400 but only a few games and prices are really blowing up.
Flash carts are relatively cheap but you need a special programmer that costs just as much in order to put roms on it. If you have several retro computers that you want to tinker with a floppy drive emulator might be a good investment at about $60.
OP here.
It came with a dataset drive and some games. Frogger on dataset and then DigDug and Demon Attack on cartridge.
I thought that my memory has gone nuts at some point and I've just imagined this game, but I found a post in the archive describing exactly what I played: https://warosu.org/vr/thread/S1125594#p1126461
This was definitely neither Star Control nor Starflight, the graphics looked a little better than that, kinda 1994-1996'ish.
Here's a rough sketch of the interface during space flight/combat. You could take up to three selectable weapons and had a status panel at the bottom with ammo bars for them. I've only played it for an hour or two before my PC broke down and the CD mysteriously disappeared.
>>4205547
I forgot the name of this one robot game on the PC. I think it might have been 8 bit, but it was a really fun game. I played it in 1991. It sucks not remembering the name.
>>4205583
I recently had something like that. It was called Free D.C.
The gameplay sounds like Master of Orion, but the interface isn't even close.
Was it DOS, or Windows?
Kind of an esoteric idea, but how about we do a thread where we would "fix" problems that almost-good games had?
>pic somewhat related, the most broken good game on the NES
>>4205458
Here's one for Sonic The Hedgehog on Genesis. Let the player roll into a ball mid-air, such as after hitting a spring.
>>4205458
not a bad idea for a thread
FF1 is okay for the most part, 2 is the one that has the potential to be fantastic with some improvements
already said this in other FF2 threads, but whatever, blame it on the autism
>remove trap rooms
>getting new spells should be a joy, not a thing to be dreaded - make the starting level of spells dependant on a character's intelligence/soul instead of having it always start at level fucking 1, a new flare spell should automatically start at level 10 for a character with 60 int
>let the player choose which level of spell he wants to use, even if you have Flare 10 you should be able to use Flare 1 or Flare 3
>fix the "hit yourself to get HP" exploit, maybe by disabling the characters from targeting themselves with Fight or offensive spells
>guest characters suck (except Minwu), give them better stats and some decently leveled spells
>nerf evasion, improve defense
>include an option to skip turns so your caster doesn't need to waste MP or risk losing intelligence by attacking
>ineffective attacks shouldn't raise weapon skills
>reduce encounter rate, increase stat gain rate
>fix enemy formations, squishy casters like wizards should always be behind 4 soldiers, souls should be behind green jellys etc.
>nerf or remove the blood sword
>enemy casters should use more single target spells instead of weak multi target elemental spells
>remove key items from the inventory once they're no longer needed
>give bosses (especially the emperor) more immunities
>nerf or remove berserk
>>4205595
>ineffective attacks shouldn't raise weapon skills
I kinda like this though since it makes it so you're not discouraged from ending encounters quickly. It's actually pretty annoying in Romancing SaGa where slower characters can end up weak because they don't get to act as much as faster characters, unless you purposefully drag out battles.

C'mon, OP...
Are you retarded? There's a lot of good action games if you just know where to look.
Though I have to admit that they are hidden in a sea of simulation, adventure and mahjong games.
tell me with your wording be honest
Your first game was alright. A bit tough to control but I enjoyed playing it.
Second game, no idea what the hell was going on, felt very all over the place.
Never played your Jaguar game or PS1 game.
Game quality and gameplay aside, Bubsy's character design is on par with that of (original) Sanic.
Both look like unimaginative mascots for off-brand breakfast cereal.
Can we all pretend that this game never happened?
It's a fine game wtf
UNPOPULAR OPINION
I like DKC 3 more than DKC 1 and 2
>>4204663
it's so lazy though, they just rushed it to market before the n64
I'm fucking terrible at video games. Just AWFUL.
Anyone have any recommendations for games to play that will help my general ability?
just fucking play something
>>4204628
>Anyone have any recommendations for games to play that will help my general ability?
Find a type of game that plays to your strengths. I enjoy thinking things through. Some Rpgs have a great story and neat battle structure.
>>4204631
>just fucking play something
This is pretty much it.
Try a whole bunch of different titles until you find one that sticks.
>>4204628
Playing a certain game type a lot helps. Playing nothing but Sonic and Mario for a week straight will make you better at Earthworm Jim, Dynamite Heady, or Oddworld at the end of that week. Obviously a small example of platformers.
You can do this with any type of game too. But playing that specific game you want to be good at helps the most (playing lots of Mario 1 will help with Mario 1 skills). The biggest benefit is just playing games to get better.
The only thing, almost equal and sometimes more important than playing a video game type a lot, would be making sure your hardware doesn't suck. Sony LCD/LED 1080p tvs since 2011 and 2014 Samsung LED/LCD UHD tvs have incredibly low delay in game mode (small example of tvs with inhuman low levels of delay/lag/gtg). If you are trying to use a Westinghouse 1080p from 2007 you are gimping. Most CRTs have very little to no delay or lag. Even some aftermarket controllers or systems induce heavy delay that can make a game go from easy to impossible. Emulator delay isn't really a thing much anymore for most emulators, but the delay of your adapters/dongles for controllers and a cheap monitor can again gimp you. I can use an X1 controller with a cycle perfect emulator and beat SMW in a 2.5 hours no deaths on a UW1440p monitor or a UHD tv, same thing on a Wii through component on a crt at 240p, same thing on original hardware over RGB at 240p, Same with a framemeister with original hardware on a projector (projector has 9ms of delay for example). BUT give me a cheap Chinese Wii controller and a Chinese wii pro controller and I will die... a lot, because there is about 350ms of delay. Comparative to the other setups I mentioned where at best you are in the range of 1-35ms of delay in total
A minor footnote about the hardware thing. For 64 games for example the controller had the octagonal notches. The games were designed with that in mind, sometimes that means the games work and play best with that controller type.
what about it?
>>4204116
Goddamn that's a sweet deal
u bought it or are selling it?
>>4204116
That's a lot of sports games. I wonder if a game store is just trying to get all that shit off their hands.
Dragon Quest/Warrior thread
What game are you playing? Are you enjoying it?
As for me I've been playing through the whole series again in anticipation for 11 to come out next year In the states. About halfway through DQ5 and loving it as usual. Though this time I've decided to spice up my playthrough a little bit by abusing the casino and getting the Gringham whip and Two metal king swords for my hero and slime knight. Suffice it to say I've pretty much broke the game and all encounters end swiftly and safety. Normally I try not to cheat or abuse the Casino in DQ games because I think it makes the game boring but I decided to try it at least once. Luckily I've already played through 5 multiple times so it's not like the experience was ruined or anything.
Looking forward to starting up 6 soon. I've only played through it once and while I enjoyed it, the game didn't capture me in the same way 4&5 did. I was expecting something more story driven but it's clear 6 is far more focused on gameplay, however this time I plan to play the game with a completely open mind and enjoy it for what it has to offer, I do remember the vocation system being a lot of fun to use.
what's the best version of 4 to play for someone who likes both older and modern styled jrpgs?
I started with the SNES remake of 1 and jumped straight to 3, I just got the ship from Portoga and went exploring the south islands, there is a shrine with an egg that does nothing (for now) and a town in another island with a desert cave I cant access (for now)
when Im done Im planning on starting IV on DS, apparently the phone version is pretty lacking despite having party chat and the NES version might be a tad too oldschool for me, I dunno, might reconsider it if battles go faster than in the DS version
>>4204084
Assuming you can't read Japanese then this is a tricky and ultimately personal decision.
IV has three English releases, they are the nes, ds, and ios release.
The nes version is obviously the most old fashioned. This version is is like the other nes dragon quest games if you played it. The battle system is a bit weird in this particular version though. In the final chapter of the game where you get your whole party you will only be allowed to control you hero, everyone else is controlled by AI. The AI is actually mostly reliable and can be pretty smart, just remember "mostly". Also this version doesn't have the postgame of the later versions. Although it is the oldest and has a bit of censorship this is genuinely the most accurate English script of the game that exists.
IV was later remade for the playstation in the same engine as DQVII that was never released outside Japan. However, this remake was later ported to the ds. This version naturally features more modern and better looking art, sound, and mechanics. Also in version the game now allows you to have complete control of your party at all times, even in chapter 5. This version also added postgame content that continues the story of the game. Unfortunately the English translation for this version is quite poor, or more rather weird. The game has multiple characters that come from different parts of the world and to try to show how different all these continents in the game were each one was given accents. These accents are taken to extreme measures though and make the text not only sound more goofy but more difficult to read.
The ios version is the same as the ds version with a minor difference. In the original English ds release the party chat, a option to converse with your party members on the overworld, was removed despite being fully translated. In this version the party chat is restored though. Apart from that though this really is the same as the ds version.
