/vr/, I think I'm obsessed,

>be me a while back
>see something on the internet about getting online on your sega dreamcast by making a dial up connection with a raspberry pi
>after a few weeks, order all the equipment
>spend about 30$ on it all
>finally hook it all up
>it works
>the community has designated times to play
>play quake 3, chu chu rocket, and some other games online
>ff a few months
>in new apartment
>set it up at my desk
>get a dreamcast mouse and keyboard
>order a custom made dreamcast mouse pad on amazon
>browsing 4chan on my dreamcast

Send help, I need therapy.

Hey guys, there's a Smash 64 tournament at PAX South in a few weeks and I want to know if there is absolutely any HIDDEN NOT-GLITCH BUT ACTUAL TECHNIQUES I should know for it.

I haven't played it since I was a kid and I've been practicing but it may not do much good if everyone knows something I don't.

L cancelling is a thing in the original Smash, other than that there isn't much hidden non-glitch strategy
>>
>>3734353

You're going to get 100% shit on but you probably already know that.
>>
if you need to make this thread you're going to get totally shit on anyways so just enjoy yourself

So this is an oddly specific question, but I've always wanted to develop a DOS based game kind of how developers used to make them and I was wondering if there were any good old books about this kind of thing. I just ordered this one on Amazon, any other suggestions?

Hope you're ready to learn some older programming languages
>>
>>3734342
I have no idea why you would want to do that. Just pick up C and OpenGL and have at it. No need to interface with shitty software like DOS. Honestly when it comes down to it, 95% of your code will be platform independent; only the last details of getting input and drawing to the screen are really platform specific.
>>
>>3734442
>only the last details of getting input and drawing to the screen are really platform specific.
Depends. Some code implemenation is platform specific even when it shouldn't be, for example shit like rand() or srand() can be platform specific. There are reproducible Mersenne twisters you can use for randomization these days that are guaranteed platform specific but that wasn't always the case. Sometimes types can be platform specific but can be dealt with using typedefs.

Because it was 3D (or at least isometric).

Better to have a good 2D game than a subpar 3D game.

Best experience in /vr/
For me it's the first time I entered the coliseum in Tomb Raider, I think its partly the music that plays as you enter and the steps that slowly lead into this area.

I cannot pinpoint one favorite experience because after the adrenaline rush and whatnot I tend to forget or not consider it good enough to call it the best.

But my most recent one was finally able to finish tomb raider 2. as I kid I bought the games, get stumped and move on and damn, that big fucking dragon, that home invasion, good times.
>>
>>3734294
I don't know about best in all of /vr/, but my best Tomb Raider experience is when I first entered Barkhang Monastery in Tomb Raider 2 and the chanting music started. Fantastic level and really made me feel like I had stumbled onto a secret complex hidden in the mountains. I was expecting more snow and caverns.

Resident Evil 2 for me. That Raccoon City streets opening section was excellent. You could feel how menacing the ambience was in those back alleys. The dread and murkiness was all over the place man...

Also, TR 1 is the best TR as a whole experience, but the Venice levels in TR 2 were unreal and comfy as fuck.

So I have Time Crisis, and Point Blank 1 and 2, and they calibrate perfectly well. But when I try to calibrate with Point Blank 3, it only works if I aim just slightly to the left of the bullseye. Nowhere else on the screen will register. I've tried this with both a PS1 over composite and a PS2 over component. As far as I can tell, the disk is in flawless shape too. Anyone have any ideas?

i have an idea for a mario game and i would like to toy around with an editor. what is the best one when it comes at ... everything. i don't know much about this but i figure i want something intuitive and easy to use, not buggy, that can make games playable on different consoles and what else am i missing.
i would prefer to do something in mario 3 or mario world: that's pretty much the standards of control when it comes at those 2d mario games isn'T it?

Which do you prefer the most: The N64 or the PS1? Why?

Between the two, I'd say that the PS1 is my preferred console.

While the N64 is good, the PS1 for me just feels more comfy and better than the N64.

>The controller in the PS1 feels more comfortable. Genres like fighting games works well with the PS1 controller than the N64, for me anyway.
>There's more games in the PS1 that I enjoyed than in the N64.
>I don't really care that much about graphics but 3D models in the PS1 feels and looks more defined and better than the N64. Can't pinpoint why.
>It's easy to make a backup disc of a game in PS1 since it uses CD.
>I like the design of the PS1 more than the N64.

I'm an RPG buff. So I like the PS1 more. This has absolutely nothing to do with specs, controller, or reviews. I like RPGs, so I liked the RPG system.

The first time I'd ever heard of Ghosts n' Goblins was on the NES. When I learned about the arcade version I wasn't that interested. I thought it couldn't be that good in comparison to the NES version. But then I fired up the old MAME on my computer. Because I'll probably never see a real GnG cabinet in its original build in my lifetime. And I was blown away.

The first thing I noticed was the music. I thought the music was great when I played the NES version but the original score of the game sounded like a real harpsichord and the booming sound it made was almost intimidating! I could only imagine being in arcades in the 80s and hearing that from across the room. Being drawn to that machine with its attention-getting sound effects and music.

Oh and it's hard. I thought the NES version was hard but the arcade version is even harder. I can't imagine having to do that twice.

>Got Fester's Quest for Christmas from my brother a year ago and didn't get around to playing it
>Cleaning all my NES carts and finally booted it up for the first time in like 20 years
>Hey this doesn't seem so bad. The music is good and the graphics and controls are decent.
>2 hits and your dead
>Dying sends you back to the start of the game world
>essential consumables like healing and anti-paralysis potions can only be purchased from specific family members and require immense backtracking to restock, and you have very limited storage capacity for each
>half the enemies are fucking invincible, and the other half take way too many hits
>Enemy respawns are completely broken and it makes just walking down the street a button-mash frenzy
>only one gun in the game isn't a broken mess and if you accidentally pick up an "upgrade" pickup you're fucked until you find a "downgrade" pickup

Holy hell this game makes me mad. Now I remember why my brother would cuss like a sailor when he played it. I actually reached a boss battle and of course I ran out of health and couldn't equip a potion fast enough.

I have concluded that Fester's Quest is meant to be an in-universe video game created by Uncle Fester. The absurd premise makes perfect sense in that context, as does the broken and unfair gameplay.

Hi AVGN

The final gun upgrade is fucking GOAT.

Also you can increase your hp bar throughout the game, but you won't need to if you don't get hit. FQ is much better than people give it credit for.

>PC Engine
I never really had a deep contact with this system, but Bomberman 93' and 94' looks pretty fun.
>SNES
Tie between SB4 and SB5, 4 has really unique mounts and each character has a special power, very fun game, however I feel like 5 has the best "physics" and flow, like the walking speed, throwing distance, how you can hold down the B button to punch the bomb when you touch it (which is convenient if you has the kick and don't want to mess up), etc, it feels smooth and more strategic/balanced.
>N64
For battle mode probably is B64, for story mode I have a certain preference for Second Attack and Bomberman Hero.
>Playstation
Bomberman Party Edition without doubt, Bomberman World is average but it's not a bad game.
>Saturn
...Saturn Bomberman, I guess? It's known as one of the best Bomberan games (and the "only" in the system), other than that, I know there's a jap exclusive called "Saturn Bomberman Fight!", but it looks pretty shitty and I never tried it myself, to be honest.
>Dreamcast
Bomberman Online was the only one (I think), while it probably was a great game for the time (considering that it was made with online in mind, but still works offline just fine), nowdays it feels outclassed by others Bomberman games.

Now, if you want to know the BEST Bomberman game ever made... Try playing pic related, it's a fangame but it's imo the best bomberman experience to ever grace humanity. Yes, even better than Saturn Bomberman, Party Edition or Super Bomberman 5. Try playing with friends, it's a blast.
