I move around alot and go overseas, so I have to keep my physical game collection small.

I know the Saturn has a crazy complicated architecture, and the N64 emulation scene is a giant steaming pile, but are there any other consoles/computers from Gen 1-5 that can't be emulated well enough for casual use?

What original hardware is still essential?
69 posts and 8 images submitted.
>>
PS1, gen 4 and back is acceptable. PS2 is shit, Dolphin is an exception but also has problems.
>>
Don't often hear about people complaining about Genesis or Master System emulation.
>>
Both Super Nintendo and Mega Drive have perfect emulation through bsnes and Genesis Plus GX.
bgb gives near perfect Game Boy and Game Boy Color emulation.
mGBA will do the same for Gameboy Advance, but if you plan on playing any romhacks, you should use VBA-M since no one bothered to test their hacks on hardware.
Mednafen will handle most things, but I'd really only recommend it for PlayStation, Sega Saturn, Virtual Boy, Neo-Geo Pocket, and Wonderswan since everything else has better options.
Obviously Neo-Geo and other arcade games work well through MAME and Final Burn Alpha.

Honestly, I tend to just use Retroarch for most things unless I find a better alternative (ie. bgb over Gambatte).

Previous thread >>3701596
This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+ Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

I'm currently on holiday in Japan, and I can't believe how much retro game prices have increased here in the last couple of years.

Can't find a GB Colour for less than $70, and I have noticed a huge increase in Playstation stuff particularly. You can still find the occasional good deal at second hand shops like Book Off, but even they seem to be catching on to the increasing demand for Japanese retro games from tourists.

All I have bought is controllers on this trip, which are still fairly good value to what people in North America/Europe/Australia generally pay.

Do people still really believe this is an inflated market bubble that will eventually pop and collapse? I certainly don't. Stock up while you can, it's only going to get worse.
136 posts and 14 images submitted.
>>
It may not burst, but it will slowly decline until it bottoms out in about 15-30 years, depending on the economy and other factors.

It is not an artificial bubble. People really do enjoy these old games and want to own and play the games. There is a high demand for the good games that will never go away while those people are alive and healthy.
If you want a game, buy it now. The prices are not gonna get cheaper because of inflation and increasing rarity. Even when noone want these games anymore, they will be antique and rare to find in any good condition.
>>
>>3718281
how much were the loose and boxed copies in that picture?
set or seperate pricing?
>>
>>3718281
I don't know why anyone fucking buys games when they could just fund development of 100% perfectly accurate everdrives so that everyone would be able to play the games, and autistic hoarders would still get to own the carts.

>What is Phantasy Star Online?
Phantasy Star Online is an MMORPG released on the PC, Dreamcast, and Gamecube, and Xbox in 2000. The game focuses on hack-and-slash combat unlike previous Phantasy Star games, and relies on teamwork & strategy.
Since then, Official servers have since been taken offline but there are fan made private servers running to this day.

Ephinea is the best private server around for PSO as it provides a feeling as close as you can get to the original servers, while also adding new and unique features to the game.

Hey im glad the threads here. Got a question..

How do I actually edit levels? I can change sprites, palettes and text. but I keep searching online for how to change what tiles are appearing on a level, or even how to change a background, and I get shit results.

All the hits im getting are 'level editor for X game' or 'its very hard to do'...does someone at least have a good link to a guide so I can see for myself whether its beyond my skill?
>>
>>3566760
All that level editors do is uncompress the tile data (if needed) and then put the modified data back into the rom when you press save or whatever. If no editors exist you'll have to do it by yourself i.e. using a hex editor. Thing is, you can't just start editing the game without knowing what you even need to edit to begin with. You'll just get lost in an ocean of numbers.

First, you have to find out WHERE the game stores the data (what memory address) and HOW the game stores it (is it uncompressed? How are the bytes ordered? etc). The whole process encompasses way too many concepts for me to even know where to start without being aware of your level of knowledge on the matter.

In other words, what do you know, so far?

I just finished Lunar The Silver Star on Sega CD and I liked it so much that I want to buy the PS1 remake. Looking on ebay, I see many different disc sets, some contain Alex and Luna on disc 1, others with Xenobia on disc 1, some with just Luna on disc 1 and some with Dyne on disc 1. I think. Was it random which disc art you got? I would like to try to get the one with Alex and Luna on disc 1.

>>
Mine has Dyne disc 1 and Alex disc 2. Never heard anything about randomization. Mine was a preorder so it's probably from the first batch.
>>
>>3741016
The Sega CD copies had varying disc art as well.
>>
http://game-rave.com/?page_id=6944

they were in sets, so it wasn't random, but it seems like it was luck of the draw if you were buying it new.

Guys, please help. Many years ago my friend and I played a vertical Shmup where you could play as different pilots from different countries. There were different planes and special bomb attacks, and the Swedish pilots were a guy with a mustache and a robot, and I think their plane looked like pic related, though I'm not sure. Any ideas?
