I kind of miss it. I was only a big reader during the N64 - Gamecube years.

Looking back, I enjoyed the few issues of Gamefan I owned more than the dozens of NPs.

What are some essential Saturn games to play? I just found out my Saturn has a modchip, so I'm definitely going to pirate some games. Anybody got a link to a good download with the entire Saturn collection maybe? Or at least reccomend 20-30 games to get.

I didn't know whether to ask this from /g/ or /vr/, but I chose /vr/.

I want to make a z80 emulator that could play Pac Man. I've been looking at mame source code and despite having an intermediate knowledge of C I still find it pretty confusing to peruse.

Is there a good book about computer architecture that could really help me out? I'm still a novice when it comes to stacks and heaps and counters and all that stuff.

Also semi related, would it be beneficial to learn x86 assembly first before tackling z80 assembly? I've heard they have some similarities, but I'm not sure if it would actually be easier.

I don't know any good general books about computer architecture, but you'll definitely want to pick up a copy of the processor manual for the z80 (if you don't already have one).

Do you have any more specific questions about computer architecture stuff, or are you just looking for good reading material?

Yes and no. On one hand, learning any assembly language will make the rest of them easier, but x86 is a nightmare to read and even worse to disassemble. You're probably better off spending that time getting better at the architecture you're actually working with.

I don't understand. If you want to emulate Pac-Man, why not just use MAME?

In either case, not only do you need to be intricately familiar with z80 assembly to do anything like this, you need to know Pac-Man's unique memory map and every other piece of hardware in the machine. If you're a novice, this may be way too difficult a project for you to handle.

I'm looking to read pretty much anything tangentially related to the topic at hand. I don't think there's really any books specifically about emulating cpus, but I could be wrong. Maybe I'm just not searching for the right keywords.

I've found quite a few tutorials though, but a lot of them are incomplete.

Recently I've found out that there is a fanstranslation of the JP verions of FFVI. How good is the translation? Is it better than the Woolsey one? Is it there anything of worth in it besides the noncensored sprites?

I never really beat the NTSC VI and was looking to try it out. And can't decide which one to play.

I don't really care for memes that might've come out of either, just want to know which one gives the best experience.
