>Punch-Out!! is undoubtedly the best NES game in 2017.
Gameplay is much more challenging and intriguing than Super Mario Bros. 3
Mega Man 2 is very meh and not at all one of the greatest games of all-time
Final Fantasy VII is the greatest story told so far in video games
>comparing a platformer with a boxing game
I used to love reading through the old NES guides. The way they would describe the games was truly incredible. I mean, they made Rampage sound amazing.
So what are some good books that capture that feel? Pic related is not in any way related.
Is this really from his book? What a piece of fucking dog shit.

Never fear, other than a forward and titles, this book will have no text at all!
These threads are really serving their purpose pretty well, huh. As expected of /vr/.
Seriously, objectively and memery aside, what *is* the appeal?
Why the surviving fascination two decades later, the spin-offs and multimedia franchise? What did this one did for people that no other entry in the series did?
Same reason why Star Wars survived a fascination for decades next to other sci-fi films. It's big, loud and flashy, it was big-budgeted and technically marvelous, and has a compelling set of heroes with an easy-to-grasp, yet far-reaching story.
There's no such thing as objective appeal really. The simplest answer is that it's the game that used the excitement about the jump to 3D to significantly broaden the worldwide JRPG player base, not to mention blowing the mind of the existing fanbase.
Of course, the excitement over 3D also extended to the developers working on it and the story clearly reflects a fresh angle even if the mechanics are almost straight out of 6.
The feel of the game got kind of diluted since 8 is quite derivative plus a lot of other publishers trying to imitate it but 7 will always be the RPG that touched off the revolution.

Anyone play the old Rance games? They are kinda retro.
Yeah I played all the /vr/ ones.
I actually played Kichikuou first, and then went back and played the main series afterwords. The Alice no Yakata 4-5-6 box has Rance 1 through 3 in it.

which ones are translated?

I think the majority of them are. If not, all of them. Rance gets a lot of love.

So apparently there's a modified version of the Pi firmware that allows for 240p over composite. Anyone tried it out? Does this put the Pi on the same level as the Wii in terms of emulation boxes?

I am in TN and all used places have the wii for 60 with 1 wiimote and no nunchuck. Craigslist has them as well but people want to sell them for 100 or more in my area. Last I looked someone had a totally awesome already modded one for 150.
I suppose if you find someone who has one collecting dust you may get it for 20-30. Good luck tho.
Name a more comfy video game location than Lon Lon Ranch.

Yeah, it's a clear example of a casual filter.
It's not totally impossible though, you just need togit gudat dashing+jumping.

Does this game even deserve it's spot as one of the all time greats?
I'm honestly more freaked out by fun playing the original
it's a good entry level rail shooter. It does not stand close to games like Rez and Panzer Dragoon.
Never heard of it, let alone viewed it as one of the all time greats. Looks like some Lylat Wars ripoff.
Absolutely it does.
However, I have a few complaints
1. Charged shots don't feel very good in the long run. I'd rather have the immediacy of Space harrier or something.
2. Aquas is soooooo slllooooowwwwww
3. Your team-mate's kills don't count as your own most of the time. (Lookin' at you Sector Z)
Besides those, it's a fuckin' masterpiece.
>jump from platform A to platform B
>save state
>jump from platform C but die
>load state
What's wrong with save states? I have literally completed that tiny percentage of the game, so why am I expected to go through it again?
You'd have to be born before 1995 to understand.
Of course there's no one stopping you from doing that, but don't act like you beat the game. The majority of challenge of a game is to go through with a certain minimum of errors. That's why lives exist. If given an infinite number of chances to do a basic platforming task then just about anyone with working eyes and thumbs could make it through. If you don't like challenge, then fine. Cheat. What matters is playing the way you think is most fun.
Whatever floats your boat, OP.
For me I like the challenge games offer and overcoming that challenge. Save states cheat you out of that challenge, and you never get better. Honestly, why even play the game at all?
For instance, I love Tetris Attack. When I first started playing it, I thought the CPU on VS was fucking impossible. Even with savestates I couldn't keep pace. I dropped that game. Years later I picked it back up again on actual hardware. It took me a while, but I got really stinking good at the game, to the point where the best CPU is a 15sec bore. I now just play endless because it's a blast now that I can spooge x13s without batting an eye. I never would have gotten good at TA using savestates.
Recently I've been playing Radical Dreamers. I've thought about using savestates to play the game, but recognize that it would have no replay value if I did.
Now I just use savestates to hack.
What lesser known arcade titles are worth trying out? All genres welcome.

So, what is the best handheld emulation device?
>>3809676
Theres apparently all kinds of new fangled shit but I always used a PSP and got really good NES, Genesis, GBC, GBA, and PS1. PS1 is run natively.
But I'm sure there's better stuff out there now
>>3809676
look up jxd s7800b, it'S pretty good for handheld emulation and you can do normal tablet stuff too
>>3809702
man I always hated that PSP could not do good Amiga emulation, can't even load .hdf files
Diablo II general
Diablo II classic and LoD Discussion.
If anyone is interested I'd be willing to host a game, we can connect through IP I believe (never done it but I can try) and run through normal together. I just re installed and I've got a lvl 22 Sorc and a level 38 summon necro. If anyone is interested please say so.
Here is an excellent, simple mod I suggest everyone try. D2 Vanilla Frosting:
https://github.com/fearedbliss/Diablo-II--Vanilla-Frosting
Features include:Bigger cube and bigger stash. Only 2 runs to transmute to the next highest rune (all the way up to Zod) and ladder only runewords available on multiplayer. And more, I believe.
Alternatively: Discuss endless pindleskin runs, obviously duped runewords destroying the economy, farming cows for XP over and over and over.

I played Diablo II classic for the first time last night. I think I'm gotten to the point where I've gotten exhausted of the frantic pace and meta of LOD that I need to dial it down back towards Diablo 1 where I can just chill and have fun. I haven't gotten far at all but I think the lack of hunting for runes and socketed loot is going to make for a comfier time. Also nice when people aren't swinging and casting for 20k numbers. Classic has huge issues on its own like no weapon swap, halved stash size, javelins actually run out, mercs are useless, 640x480 only, but I'll take it. You do at least get the awesome classic menu and Chaos Sanctuary runs are back.
