what's the most underrated JRPG of the 16 bit era?
Probably something not translated to English.

Relative to overrated Squaresoft games?
Probably Phantasy Star IV.
I'm interested in playing this series (also known as Legend of the River King).
Is there anything I should know about fishing or similar beforehand?
Is the PCE-CD remake of the first game a good start?
Like practical, real world fishing knowledge? No. Also I would say go legit and play the game boy version of the first game. It's quite good.

I thought the Gameboy was the third game.

If you know japanese go for it.
I think the only thing you need to know is about the types of tackle and bait to use. Some work better with some fish, but it's nothing NPCs won't tell you in game or you won't figure out when fish stop going for your lure.
good morning /vr/ so i been holding off replaying resident evil 2 because of the remake but i cant hold out any longer with not even a snippit of news, im planning on playing the pc version, which version do i download, do i patch it, i want to play in 1080, what do i do /vr/?
Just download the PS1 version and emulate it.
>playing old games in 1080p
Good luck with that.
i saw you guys talking about a rerelease with higher resolution a few weeks back but i never screen capped the comment
>>3868649
fuck that id rather not cut myself on the edges, i dont mind not playing in 1080 but im not going bother emulating it

Wiegraf was being idealistic. Gustav and the rest of the death corps were being realistic.
Why did the designers totally give up on this game after the first level?

Game is so hard they never expected anyone to beat the first level anyway.

>tonberry wipes your party
how retarded was this game?
>easily spamable limit breaks, which are devastating themselves
>magic refining, meaning you could easily get 100 tornado & curaga in the first hours of the game. the alternative is spending hours of tedious drawing
>basically spend all game playing a card game, in a fucking RPG
>stat junctioning, meaning you could be always better than the enemy provided you're not stupid
>level scaling, fighting battles is actually worse for you
>money serves no purpose whatsoever, given that the only thing you'll buy will be a few weapons and tents
>painfully long animations for everything, specially GFs. retarded button-mashing summons
>you shoot yourself in the foot if you try to use magic, since your stats gets worse and then you have to go through long animations. the game becomes a "press attack & spam limits" simulator since it's always the most sensible option, leaving you with no variety in gameplay
>boring sidequests (developers' understanding of fun: killing 20 tomberries)
>few & weak bosses
>the only proper dungeon is Ultimecia's castle, everything else are just 3-4 passages to trigger the next cinematic
>no loot since everything is based on GF refining abilities and beating enemies to get items. So you're left with small dungeons and no exploration, great.
>retarded characters (yeah, let's abandon this important mission because quistis was a meanie to rinoa, sheesh)
>retarded story (not even worth explaining, you know already)
>shit pacing (you're endlessly trudging through uninteresting text since there's so little in the way of gameplay)
how there's still people who like it, I don't understand, other than muh nostalgia
>>3867894
Essentially everything you're complaining about translates to
>This game lets me play any way I want, and that's a bad thing
Yes, it's breakable. Yes, you can disable random encounters and never have to raise a single character level for the duration of the entire game. Yes, you can draw-spam and max out your spell inventory immediately upon setting foot outside Balamb Garden. Yes, you can grind AP and learn awesome GF skills early into the game that allow you to refine 100 Curagas, which you can then junction to Squall for 9999 HP.

yeah nah, I think Fallout or Arcanum are better examples, anon.
Being a "jack of all trades, master of all" is not roleplaying in the least, unless you like to roleplay walking gods. I guess you consider Skyrim a masterpiece

>Point #1
In BG2, monks are a 7/10 party member but a 9.5/10 solo class. Monks are not in BG1, so I'm obviously talking about BG2. BG1=BG1. BG1=/=BG1EE.
>can equip amulet of power
>can cast infinite cloudkills from wands (sell and buy to replenish) and is completely immune to it so can fight in the middle of it which is awesome
>easily gets 100+ magic resistance
>can get the same amount of strength as a fighter because a monk's primary stat is also strength. I'm talking about game rewards that increase the primary stat.
>running solo equals tons of experience. monks rely more on levels, not equipment. this means that monks will get way stronger, way faster than all other warrior classes.
>low hp is irrelevant thanks to hardiness. cast 3 hardiness to get 120 physical resistance. monks get a total of 21 high level abilities. you might as well get 6 or 9 hardiness and the rest greater whirlwinds.
>highest physical damage among single-class warrior classes alongside the kensai. 1d20+4+4+STRBONUS. No improved haste is irrelevant because of Greater Whirlwinds, and you're solo anyway. Running solo will get you HLAs really really quickly. Monks will have the best physical damage among single-classes for all of Shadows of Amn, including Watcher's Keep, until you begin the TOB storyline content. So idiots who constantly say that a monk's damage is not as good as X or Y is talking about the last 5% of the game which is just a couple of boss fights. M-muh Foebane+5, m-muh Ravager, m-muh Axe of the Unyielding, etc. Yeeeeaaaah, enjoy using those weapons for the final 20-30 minutes of the game. For the other 95% of the game, when comparing solo single-classes, a monk has the absolute best physical damage output alongside the kensai. This wasn't the case in SOA, but thanks to GWW, it is the case in TOB.
>Point #2
F/M/T and F/M/C cannot use Level 9 spells. They cannot even get mage High Level Abilities. I'm talking about the official game here. Anyone who tells you otherwise is using an unofficial mod or patch. F/M multiclass gets 2 level 9s. A fighter-mage dual class gets 4 level 9s. Obviously, you're gonna want berserker-mage or kensai-mage for the extra perks. My point is, when it comes to F/M/T and F/M and F-M, there is no clear-cut winner. Most of the idiots who insist that F/M/T is easily better than the other two are using no-experience-cap mods that let their F/M/T get level 9 spells. In the official game, that's impossible.
>Point #3
Some people keep insisting that skalds are useless in TOB because their bard song becomes redundant. Here's the thing. Yes, it becomes redundant, but SO DOES EVERYTHING ELSE. The game becomes a repetition of using GWWs, spike traps, improved alacrity, and so forth. But before you get HLAs, the skald's song is useful. It gets good at level 15, and really good at 20. You get HLAs at level 24. Hey, 4 levels is still something, especially in a party.
Monks are kinda average in a team, but yeah they're one of the easiest solos in the game. solo sorcs and multis are stronger but it's tedious to micromanage literally everything..
ToB is garbage btw.
>>3867614
>I'm talking about the official game here. Anyone who tells you otherwise is using an unofficial mod or patch.
That's nice, but the modded game is far more fun.
Anyway, going to try a solo BG1 using a fighter/mage.
Disabled traps and locks because fuck them.

Can you elaborate on the definition of this in your own words? It seems to be nebulous at best on articles I find on the Internet.

you have to shoot first, know what the enemy is going to do, and lead your shots sometimes

So Space Invaders?
So, we still have no way to get access to an older games source code?
Like even an NES game? What's preventing us from getting access to older games' source code for making better mods and fixing bugs and such?
Is there any way to brute force through it and restore the source code from a ROM?
>>3867309
That's what a disassembly is. Idk how they're made, but it's more complicated than running the rom through a program, apparently.
And even then it's in assembly language, not something readable like C.
>>3867309
Disassembling software is really, really, really hard. You can figure out what it's doing, but without building a specific decompiler for each game, you cannot just decompile an app.
Think of it like ground beef. First, you kill the cow and cut it into slices. Then you push it through the grinder and make a burger out of the resulting slurry. That burger has little resemblance to the original cow, and determining what color that cow was would require serious DNA analysis of the beef. You can't ungrind ground beef.
Some games we do have sources to some games. SMB for NES was decompiled and commented. https://gist.github.com/1wErt3r/4048722
Atari 2600 games are just fucking assembly, so they're relatively easy to reverse and have been: http://benfry.com/distellamap/ They look cool, but you won't be understanding or modifying them. 2600 games are optimized down to the fucking bit. Pitfall has 256 screens, all defined by generative code, rather than laid out in memory.
The source code we have today was either saved by someone working on the game who kept the stuff on a print out or on a disk in their garage, or it was disassembled over the course of a months by hand by very smart people.
"Brute Forcing" is a meaningless term. I suppose this would be analogous to trying to reassemble the cow from the ground beef. In the end, it'd just be a really gross, shambling pile of ground beef in the shape of a cow.
You'd be better off just becoming familiar with reading and hex editing nes roms directly. Start with gameshark codes, learn how they're developed, develop some of your own then go on to learning how patches are created.
Has any of you played fake mario games?
Did any of them were as good as the oficial ones?
Pic related was pretty good and i remember playing it on famicom as a kid.
btw what is a good nes psp emulator? I want to play this gem on it.
>>3865380
theres at least 20 "mario" games. Probably the most infamous ones are the Flinstones and the Joe & Mac versions.
Not really a mario game, but I do own a copy of Donkey Kong 4: The journey of over time and space for Game Boy. Having completed it, it is as crappy as it sounds
Pic related is my favorite, the original game is Kaiketsu Yanchamaru 3.

Fullscreen is fucked up on newer windows versions. That's keeping me from playing it.
It's open source now so I hope it gets fixed.
I fucking love Zelda classic, Link's Quest for the Hookshot 2 is easily one of the best goddamn quests I've played. Mario's insane rampage is worth it for the hilarious edge.
Currently playing through "In the lost kingdom of the banana blood god" and that's also really good, despite the title.
