Name comfy stages with ideas that aren't the usual "greeny hills" or forest stages.
For example the medieval town during harvest celebration in Madical Adventure 3.

Explain how there is a better 2D RPG game than Mother 2/Earthbound
Mother 3 is better
Well other RPG's can have better character development, customization, or battle mechanics first off. Earthbound is very standard in almost all regards outside of rolling HP and even then it doesn't add as much compared to other 2D RPG's.

Due to family shit, I've been away from home for about a week. The old thread died in that time, unfortunately.
Anyway, I'm back home now and using the same trip as last time, so people know I'm me.
I've just taken a few pics of SOME of the games I'm happy to sell. I should note that all of the games are in the absolute WORST condition that they possibly could be! I've taken them straight from (dry, smoke-free, but dusty) storage- put them on my spare bed and snapped them. Everything there would look a lot better just for a wipe with a cloth and most of the boxes could be smartened up with a bit of TLC; that kind of thing.
I'll start with the pic from the old thread-

If there's a game/box instruction manual that is without it's partner,(s) I've almost definitely got those other items- just haven't found the right moving crate yet!
It's embarrassing posting with a tripcode!
Well, I think it is.
(Started using this trip half way down the old thread)
Big fan of this game, have never done a run where I avoided experience.
I haven't even got Ifrit yet, I just started and went ahead and stocked some magic up before I went to bed last night.
From what I can tell, the biggest hurdle I'm going to have in this run, is managing GF AP.
Is there like some formula that everyone typically follows to maximize their AP points, while avoiding EXP? I've got them set to learn their element refine ability first, but I'm considering switching Ramuh-Bird to learn Card first.

DUDE
Killing enemies with GFs doesn't give you XP, just AP. Same with card ability.

Well you picked by far the easiest game to do it in.

Dislike. Would be okay if there weren't reset squares.

Like. It's a cool concept. I enjoyed the short challenges and weird fights it gives you, like Melon Bread and Minion Soldier.
What are some ps1 games on the psn store worth getting? No games that are on GOG/steam though.
I already have RE2 and SH1
>>3889798
>What are some ps1 games on the psn store worth getting?
I think Sony is asking a bit too much for digital copies of these games. In many cases, you can buy physical copies from eBay for the same price or less. Note that if you're running a PS3, all models are backward-compatible with PS1 discs.
There are a few PSone Classics that might be considered deals compared to the expense of buying from eBay, though. I think games like King's Field are probably consistently overpriced on eBay, but the PSN Store may want a mere USD$9 or less for a digital copy.
GOG has a complete dearth of jRPGs, so I'd start with those.
Suikoden II
Legend of Dragoon
Final Fantasy I-IX
Chrono Cross
Parasite Eve
Legend of Mana
Vagrant Story
Xenogears
Arc the Lad I-III
Grandia
Wild Arms I-II
Breath of Fire III-IV
Symphony of the Night
Et cetera.
>>3889827
They sell the games for $2-$9 and they stay on your PSN account forever so you can download them on any compatible PS device you have. Even the $9 ones are good prices.

Have any of you run into issues with cartridges that use batteries dying?
So far I have never experienced this, but I've read about how some old N64 and SNES cartridges used SRAM and were powered by a little battery in them, then once that battery died many many years later, people lost their save files. I'm moving into a new place next month and I'm going to set my old consoles up, and one of the things I'd like to do first is run though Ocarina of Time again. I'm not exactly the fastest/best gamer, so it could take me a couple of months or so to beat it. My fear is that since the cartridge is nearly 20 years old, the battery will give out when I'm on one of the later dungeons or something. Not a disaster, but it would be annoying, since I haven't beat this game since I was a kid and I'd really like to again.
Anyways, how common is this? Could I expect the battery to hold out for another year or something? Should I replace it before I start? It looks kind of complicated. Any advice would be appreciated.
>>3889740
It's not complicated at all. You desolder a tab or two, put a new tabbed battery on the board and resolder it. The only tricky part is, if this is for a Nintendo game, getting it open. Though, you can buy screwdrivers for them online.
Just do it whenever it it dies, but it's easy to replace if you really want to.
>>3889740
had this problem with Gameboy games -- even with pokemon games that had only existed for so long
Not sure if it's possible wear and tear since people tend to save often on pokemon
>>3889759
The GBA games had batteries that died quickly. It only affects the internal clock.
What's your opinion on old titles being ported to new consoles?
Obviously ports with new content or features are generally great (Sega 3D Classics are an excellent example of how to do this) but what about stuff like the Virtual Console or Hamster's ACA and ACA Neo Geo series where it's just an emulated version of the game?
>>3889484
Absolute rip-off, especially for the prices Nintendo asks. I fell for it a few times on the Wii and 3DS, mostly because it was appealing to have some of my classic favorites easily at hand, especially on a portable, but ever since I found a good CRT and hooked up all my old systems again, I've no need for them. If there's every any game I wanna play, don't own, and is too expensive, I'll just emulate or get a flash cart.
And yeah, Sega's 3D classics are the fuckin' bomb. I play 3D Sonic 2 and Out Run all the time.
>>3889484
>What's your opinion on old titles being ported to new consoles?
If you're referring to emulated "ports," then they're hardly ports at all.
I can get behind some of the physical releases of arcade classics or Sega compilations for modern consoles, but anything on Virtual Console is just overpriced emulation.
I think the only compilations I currently own are Atari Collection 2 for PS1, and Fantasy Zone Complete Collection for PS2. Both were a value.
>>3889484
Oh! I see they got those neo-geo titles on the American switch e-shop. Neat.
I'd mostly get them so I can have them on my switch and play them where ever whenever. With the Switch being portable and featuring two controllers it'd be pretty great to bring it over to a friend's house and play it with them. In the case of those Neo-geo games it's more of a convenience type of thing. Unless the port just fucking sucks, of course. (see dotEmu's attempts for the steam version of the metal slug games)
Those Sega 3D classics though, yeah man, those rule. The only down-side being they're on a portable tiny screen I suppose, but I still play them quite a bit.
I found an archived /vr/ thread from 2013 wherein someone referred to The Guardian Legend as "grossly overrated." I couldn't reply, what with it being archived and all, but really? Grossly overrated? A game that even most people from my generation (in their 30s) have never even heard of?
(((costanza.jpg)))
I think TGL is one of the best NES games ever made. Alongside Crystalis, it's a tie for my favorite NES game of all time.
The first time I played it was after buying it from a display case in SEARS in like 1989 or 1990. I don't think I ever played a shmup before and I had so much trouble beating the first boss that I actually had tears of frustration in my 8-year-old eyes, yelling at my mom to take the stupid game back to the store.
Thankfully she didn't. It wound up being one of the best games I ever played. The variety of the world and themes, so diverse yet consistent with each other, made exploring NAJU an absolute delight. The music is probably one of the best VGM soundtracks ever composed. The bosses are bizarre, iconic, and larger than life. The gameplay mechanics, such as RPG elements like being able to increase your HP meter, ammo stock, and weapon levels only add to the depth. To top it all off, the game had a female protagonist without having to shove any sort of political bullshit down your throat.
I have nothing but praise to sing for this game. As a game dev I've made my own spiritual adaptation and I'd gladly hack the rom for a remix or build another entirely new game from scratch to pay homage to this classic. I recently beat it on my modded NES Classic and was surprised at how well it holds up to this day, nearly 30 years later.
If you love retro games and haven't played this one, it's definitely worth a look.
>genre mashups
I'll bet you're the type of person who rolls bard, too, asshole.
>>3889465
>A game that even most people from my generation (in their 30s) have never even heard of?
The other anon might have been referring to its post-second generation popularity. Guardian Legend is one of the most commonly recommended "hidden" gems for the NES, so most any retro enthusiast has played it by now. And I agree, it is a tad overrated. It's really not the holy grail of shooters that some people make it out to be.
Also, the game is somewhat cheap on the reseller market, so there are a lot of copies still in circulation. That would seem to suggest that the game saw many sales in its day. Maybe it wasn't often mentioned in old gaming magazines, but nonetheless might have been a common household item.
I'm getting some weird input errors with Art of Fighting 2 in mame and fba. It only happens vs the computer. I can't reproduce it vs a 2nd player. What happens is that a double input will occur. For example, if I do a sweep which is Down+B with Ryo, sometimes it will repeat the move right after without me pressing any buttons. It only happens sometimes, not every time. Anyone else have this problem?
>>3889427
Does that happen only in AoF2 or any other games too?
