Anyone else encounter issues with crashing/freezing when playing the Barkhang Monastery level in Tomb Raider II?

Since it's such a big level, it seems like the Playstation's puny processor has a hard time handling all the code at once. Then you've got those monks running around and converging in one place, causing the frame rate to drop and characters to blink in and out of sight.

It's a shame, since otherwise it's one of the best levels in the game.

>Anyone else encounter issues with crashing/freezing when playing the Barkhang Monastery level in Tomb Raider II?

The TR games use Redbook audio tracks. They're incredibly sensitive about any of that data being corrupt or out of place. Likely, the game is trying to load an audio track at a specific part of the level, but the data is corrupt or in the wrong position. This is most likely to occur with emulation or playing from a burned disc.
>>
the pc version played it just fine on my birds celeron 2gb shitbook, framerate dont dip at all, surprisingly
>>
>>3902625
I used the original disc. The crashing doesn't happen too often, but I always have to remind myself of the possibility. I could try getting into the habit of saving more often, but it won't be easy since I've gotten so good at the level.

I was playing the PS1 version. I'm sure the PC version runs smoother.

So.. whats the second best option to replace a N64 stick? first one being buying a mint condition OEM controller at not an absolute retarded price.

Ive tried with those Gamecube style replacement sticks and it fucking sucks.

Is there any other option that gives good results? the guy making those Steel Sticks has a huge waiting list.

There is something odd, scary, disturbing and off about mario 64 and its world. Almost like its takes place in the middle of nowhere, far away and isolated.

That would be the shit N64 graphics making it look empty and boring as all fuck after the 2D games.

Although I like 3d it kinda relates to what >>3901067 said. Early 3d has a weirdness to it that makes it feel kind of "off" in some ways.

I uh, have a problem, /vr/.

I'm a hipster. I have a huge collection of retro games, but I never play them. I always find an excuse.

>God, these graphics are ugly.
>Okay, these controls are shit.
>The framerate is bad.
>This puzzle is ridiculous.
>It's too hard.
>I might as well use a guide. That's what people did back then.

Does anyone else have this problem? I've already invested about $1,000, and if I'm being honest...I don't feel like playing these games anymore. Thoughts?

What happened? When did killing kids in video games become not acceptable and why? Fallout 1 and 2 you could kill kids, and that was 1997 and 1998. So what year did it change?
83 posts and 8 images submitted.
>>
Fallout's writing was never that great. It's not surprising the developer would censor its own creative work just to appease reactionaries who whined about it. (And likely never played the game for themselves, for that matter)

You can still kill children in a number of other retro series, though. King's Field comes to mind. I don't think there were any consequences to killing NPCs until the third game, and the consequences are still pretty minimal.

Also, Ultima. I know some games allow you to kill NPCs at the risk of triggering endless waves of guards coming after you.

So maybe 98 is the cutoff
For me, the more interesting question is why there are regular threads about killing children in video games here
Is it there one person here who has this fetish, or is it more common?
>>
Transition to 3D maybe? It looks more "real" so the depiction of dead kids was more appalling.

For my aesthetic preferences, I'd say either swap the bottom two or make them equal. T-t-t-tuuuurbo is for tiny-brainers anyway, so that adds nothing to the Sharp.

I'd say yes, although it's not a masterpiece, the visuals alone make the game worth it, it's still the game that recreated the feel of the series the best (even better than the PS2/PSP games).
It's mostly a tech demo to showcase the cool 3D models of Evas (and Angels, and other mechs) they could do on the N64.
I mean look at pic related (nevermind the horizontal lines due to emulation fuckups)
Gameplay-wise it's a mixed-bag, it's understood that this game is made for the Evangelion fan. However, it's not bad either, it works.
1 on 1 battles are very similar to the Ultraman games on SFC, many people go into this game thinking it's like a regular fighting game, but it's not, it's a giant monster combat game. So moving the Eva is very slow and clunky, but if you know what to do and where to attack, you will be able to do some cool stuff, most of it is just inputting commands at the right time and seeing an attack animation though, but there's a strategic logic behind it. For example you can't inflict damage without breaking the A.T. Field first, for that, there's a buttonmashing sequence (that's more timing than mashing, though), after that it's all about building up your sync ratio and defend yourself against attacks. Once you've got a good sync ratio you can perform stronger attacks.
But besides the 1 on 1 battles there are other kind of missions, that are more like mini-games, like aiming, or doing a QTE sequence. One of my favorite was the Magmadiver one where you have to chase Sandalphon.
They're all pretty short and don't overstay their welcome. I guess the guys behind this game were conscious that while the battle system worked, it couldn't be used for every battle, as some angels aren't even humanoid or fought on foot, so they came up with different mission styles.
It's very straightforward and arcade-y too, so it's also the easiest Evangelion game to pick up and play (along with the non-retro Battle Orchestra and 3nd impact)

Things that pissed me off in Final Fantasy VIII

1. What's the point of setting the missile error ratio to max if the missiles are going to arrive at their destination anyway?

2. Why is Ultimecia hellbent on capturing Ellone and using her powers when she can already travel through time?

3. The orphanage scene. HAI WE ALL ACTUALLY KNOW EACH OTHER.

4. The drawing and junction system. I want real magic with magic points. I want real armor and accessories.

5. An abandoned spaceship (the Ragnarok) conveniently appears when Squall and Rinoa need one and they happen to be exactly within its trajectory.

6. Rinoa is a spoiled brat who is only involved with the Timber independence movement to "get back at daddy".

7. This game punishes you for leveling up by making the enemies stronger.

8. If a sorceress can't die until she passes on her powers why not just live forever?

9. The limit breaks. HAI HIT CIRCLE A BUNCH OF TIMES UNTIL YOU GET IT.

10. Why is the D in SeeD capitalized? For years I pronounced it CD.

11. Did Cid create Balamb Garden, did NORG, did Esthar, or is it an ancient Cetra shelter? Make up your mind game.

12. The garden conveniently learns to fly and dodges the missiles at the last minute. HEY GUYS GALBADIA GARDEN CAN FLY TOO.

13. Wasting time defeating 20 Tonberries to get the Tonberry GF.

14. Is it Adel or is it Esthar's satellites that are responsible for the radio interference?

15. Why not launch Adel's tomb into the Sun?

16. If Ultimecia's powers can only be in one sorceress how come Edea and Adel are both sorceresses at the same time?

17. What's the point of Rinoa deactivating Adel's tomb if it was going to fall to Earth anyway with the Lunar Cry?

18. Why is Adel so big? All the other sorceresses have normal proportions.

19. Quistis abandoned her post at the end of disc 1 to apologize to a spoiled brat for being right. No wonder she got fired from being an instructor.

20. Where does Galbadia Garden go after disc 2?
278 posts and 27 images submitted.
>>
21. What happened to Squall's wound he received at the end of disc 1?

22. Why not just prevent Dr. Odine from inventing Junction Machine Ellone?

23. Rinoa sucks. She never belongs with the party at any point and she upstages every single important event unconditionally. Make sure you can trap Edea between the gates? No, let's go apologize to Rinoa instead. What's that? We're losing badly in a battle with Galbadia Garden? People are dying? Hold on, Rinoa slipped and fell. Go save her NOW. What's that? Adel somehow freed herself and got swept away by a horde of monsters that are headed toward Earth? WAIT! Rinoa is STUCK IN OUTER SPACE. GO SAVE HER NOW!

24. "Draw failed".

25. Seifer only starts mentioning "Matron" after Irvine reveals it.

26. Irvine somehow shoots Edea from the front when her back is to him.

27. Assault rifles exist in this universe and prior to Dr. Odine's discoveries only a select few were able to use magic. Taking this into account, the widespread use of melee weapons remains unexplained.

28. What the Hell does a gunblade even do?
>>
at least the OST was ok
>>
OK I'll take 1-5 and someone else can do the rest because I can't be fucked.

1. Because you lose Seed rank if you don't.

2. Because she doesn't have the ability to go back further than the time of the game. Ellone does.

3. You're correct this is fucking stupid.

4. The devs chose a different system. It's not perfect. Get over it.

5. This is even more retarded that the orphanage given the infinite trajectories possible. Someone wanted a cinematic and romantic lost in space bit and this was the get out.
