Tell me /vr/, why is the first Adventure Island never brought up when somebody starts talking about NES hard games? Starting in Area 6 the game devolves into bullshit, including several stages where you need a weapon or you're fucked like a turkey. Of course, how could you get there unless you knew of the secret Hudson bee that allows infinite continues, and then guessed the obscure button combo that allows you to use the continues. That Bee? Only in one place in the game btw. Fuck this game. I'm on 8-3 and I'm so close...
>>3909330
The Hudson Bee is at the beginning of the game so if you fuck up you can go and get her, and yes the game is hard as fuck but i do not thing is hard like in the Ninja Gaiden series where the game is just fucking cheap, also Adventure Island 4 is amazing, one of the best Famicom games out there.
>>3909330
I'm guessing because it wasn't a unique NES hard game, just a slightly easier port of Wonderboy. Most games on the NES that are considered NES hard tend to be exclusives, like Ninja Gaiden, Battletoads, Mega Man, Castlevania 3, etc. At least, that's my theory.
>>3909330
Because it's a repetitive, boring, long-ass game.
Same reason nobody brings up the countless other early NES games that are long, repetitive, and fucking hard. It doesn't feel intentionally hard based on conscious design, instead just galloping after the zeitgeist of the time and not really standing out in any way.
It's insanely hard though
Can anyone here tell mewhat is happening in the larger setting of Tactical Orge? I've played Let's us cling together and Knight of Lodis, and have picked up bits and pieces. But what about the grand scale of things? Who is fighting who for what?
The Church of Lodis is a bunch of cunts. Demons are cunts. Everyone is mad.
But seriously, play Ogre Battle/Ogre Battle 64 if you want to fill in gaps and get more of the setting. They are worth playing through.

Many moons ago men fought against ogres.
Men won because FUCK YEAH! HUMANITY!, sealing ogres in the netherworld.
There's still places with high spiritual activity where you can kind of open gates to the world ogres were sealed in or the world of "gods", these places are known as Chaos Gates and have been sealed after the legendary Ogre Battle because every time they get opened shit gets real.
Somewhere along the setting's timeline Lodis becomes a huge empire akin to the ancient roman empire.
At some point, High Priest Sardian becomes the shadow ruler of Lodis by basically controlling the senate through bribing or putting his followers there, shagging the queen, having political immunity because MUH RELIGION et alia.
Sardian wants to tap into the Chaos Gate for reasons because the church is always evil just like in real life, mustache twirling, beard caressing and evil cackles ensue.
Lodis keeps expanding, thus allowing Sardian to find various Chaos Gates around the world and try to open them by proxy through his knights or by fomenting wars and shit, sometimes both.
Barely related political shit happens along the way and you get to play through that uninteresting shit with a cast of literal whos who are almost always irrelevant to Sardian's scheming but are all tied together by him fucking shit up in their homelands to get to dem sweet Chaos Gates, you also get some discount nihilism and basic philosophy classes too if you're lucky.
Since Zenobia was the MC country of the first game they make it seem like they're those pretty important dudes who knew it all behind the scenes but in reality they almost always don't know what the fuck they're doing and often make things worse for other countries because they're inept imbeciles.
Some Lodis people are pretty cool guize tho, there's also this hot witch who loves produce for some reason and tons of non human units for all the furry/scalies out there.
It also will never get a closure.
I like the pixel art, and the 32 bit consoles finally had the necessary color depth for really rich, good looking 2D visuals. It's a shame everybody was so hyped for shitty rudimentary 3D at the time that 2D was thrown under the bus.
>>3909023
It's not as if they went for 3D exclusively as a visual trend, guy; the new practical possibilities were the really enticing bit for proper devs.
Excluding genre hybrid and non-pixel-artsy stuff like Oddworld and Skullmonkeys, I guess Lomax and Rayman are the most common pure platformers that spring to mind
its half platformer half shoot em up
Astal mixes pixels with hand-drawn art.
What does /vr/ think of it?

Shit! Remember it!

how do I get my MAME to have a nice splash screen that'll display each title card or at least spice it up more than just a dull black screen with each game name on it?
I hope you know what I mean, I tried taking a picture of the splash screen but screenshotting only works ingame

welcome to the world of frontends.
i don't know whats current now, but hyperspin used to be the shit
Why are the two girls in the next box? Why is there an empty space on the bottom row?
Is this a glitch (E.g. should the dancing girls be on the left side of the screen rather than the right?), or just a visual joke that has to do with subverting expectations as they added more and more characters to the ending as you started at a higher block level?
For context, here's what you see when you clear Mode B Level 9 High 0
With a height of 1
With a height of two. As you can see, the revelers have filled the top row. Where can they go from here?
I found this: http://www.emutalk.net/threads/55441-Game-Boy-Mono-quot-True-quot-colors
But it seems too different from what Nintendo itself uses on their Virtual Console? Does anyone have the RGB values from the VC's GB emulator?
There's also palettes for the Pocket and Light, which seem close enough to real hardware: http://www.emutalk.net/threads/55449-Game-Boy-Pocket-and-Light-quot-True-quot-Colors-bgb-GB-Pocket-and-GB-Light-border
not a palette per se but Hi-Ban's DMG shader for Retroarch is stupidly good. Colors are spot on.
Look at it. That is an emulator screenshot.
>>3908532
Thanks, that looks great. I'll have look into that shader.
I've found what Nintendo uses on the Virtual Console in the meantime: https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-editing-the-gameboy-virtual-console-palette.410037/
VC Game Boy's green palette values in RGB
Color0: 189 255 33
Color1: 156 239 41
Color2: 90 140 66
Color3: 74 74 74
ColorLCD: 165 222 57
VC Game Boy's grey palette values in RGB
Color0: 206 206 173
Color1: 165 165 140
Color2: 107 107 82
Color3: 41 41 24

Will these cheap chinese capture cards work for streaming retro stuff? I mean it takes HDMI, so assuming it can stream any hdmi input, any retro stuff would work no? Assuming I'm converting any output signal to hdmi.
My current setup is I play my games on my crt over rgb via scart. My tv actually has rgb output. So I was planning on taking the rgb (via bnc to scart) output, converting it to hdmi and then just running that into a capture device. I'm just hoping these cheap chinese ones will work.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/PCI-E-Grabber-High-Definition-Video-Sources-PCI-E-HDMI-Game-Video-Capture-Card-/172166653077?tfrom=172318061422&tpos=left&ttype=price&talgo=undefined
>>3907246
If your TV can do RGB over SCART you can afford to get a proper streaming card. Don't take a chance with cheap Chinese shit, especially stuff that goes inside your PC
>>3907264
I did my own research alrady, seems like it'll work fine.
And as far as a 'proper streaming card' this seems like it uses the exact same chips on the more expensive avermedia capture cards. Obviously avermedia cards or equivalent have better customer support and packaging, but I don't see any reason why not to buy a chinese version. I'm not looking to spend a lot of money on streaming this shit to the 2 or 3 people who would actually watch it.

Do what you want, it's your money
Got the flu which is why I'm out of commission for a few days. That's why I'm looking for some quality games to emulate.
What are your favourite games of ye olde times?
Pic related, that's what I finished when I had the flu last time.
