Yes. Not even graphics, just violence (and characters).

The early games ARE moderately fun though, but only slightly and only for a little while.

The modern games are much better. 9 and X(L) are pretty solid games.

Princess Toadstool exclusively. The rest are objectively trash in every conceivable way because they cannot fly.

Depends on level, but usually Princess for long-range jumping power. Luigi for some levels, Toad for others, Mario never.

I play retro because I enjoy them more than modern games. And if you feel overwhelmed know that there will never be any more "retro" games coming out

I prefer playing retro games since the new games these days seem to have a bigger focus on story and graphics than actual game play.

I play games that are fun.

There's gorillions of them out there nowadays, the GPD Win is probably among the best simply because of Windows. But even tho I love mine, i'm not a big fan of the form factor, check, I'm personally thinking on getting a JXD s5800, but i'm not sure how powerful it is, i'm sure that since it's Android it should at least be able to do up to PS2 just fine.

Overall most emulation machines now are Android base, but you still have things like the GCW Zero, and Dingoo consoles for 8 and 16-bit emulation or homebrew games, and the Dragonbox Pyra is coming out sometime this year hopefully, which IMO is a hair better than the GPD Win even tho it's ARM and it doesn't run botnet 10.

not quite related to your post but a couple months ago I got a presumably modded PS1 that plays jap and burnt games seemingly perfectly but for whatever reason, PAL games have a number of problems

on my plasma, the burnt PAL games are stretched and show the top 3/4 of the screen, and a real one is green, full of dithering and also shows 3/4 of the game starting from the upper left corner

on my old tiny CRT the burnt game suffers the same problem but the real one just rolls the image

is it something with the games themselves or the TVs?

Yes, it was very easy to figure out by performing an image search.
