DOOM THREAD / RETRO FPS THREAD - Last thread >>3922606

Informal bread baked. Added my own personal mod here for gzdoom (runs on Plutonia), its nothing fancy and its just something I play personally, no new maps. It can be a challenge but at least the difficulty is more organic, its just another way that the UAC and demon invasion could have turned out.

Does anyone else have trouble abandoning games? I'm not even enjoying this garbage but I feel like I have to beat it before playing games I actually want to (Link's Awakening and Donkey Kong)

I have the opposite problem. If a game is one I hadn't grown up with, a game over might make me shelve it for the next six months.

Nope. I'm a born quitter.

Play Donkey kong and then come back to KI when you're not upset with it anymore.

Super Mario Land thread.

Why was this game so short? I was enjoying it and suddenly it was over. I'll probably play through it again. I feel like I missed out on some secrets, like getting to pic related. Kind of disappointing in terms of length and challenge but it was still a fun game.

I'm gonna give SML2 another go today. It was one of my favorite childhood games. I'm hoping it's good for more than nostalgia.

Mario Land is very short, but has really fun level design and Mario feels great to control. It's not much shorter than SMB or SMB3 if you beat those using warp pipes.

ML2 is long and offers a ton of variety. It really stands up to the test of time and is still a really fun playthrough, if incredibly easy. Play it agaih, it's fucking great.

>Why was this game so short?
So you can finish it on short trips, then you get a harder mode.

One of my all times favorites, it remains fresh as fuck no matter what.

>Why was this game so short?
It's a launch title. For a handheld. And in 1989.

Early GB games are either simple, short or a combination of both. Just look at what kind of things were released with SML:
>Alleyway
>Yakuman
>Baseball
>Tetris (USA and Europe)
>Tennis (USA)
Breakout, Mahjong, a simple baseball game, a simple Puzzle game and a simple Tennis game. Besides Tetris, there's nothing special here.

Imo, the original GB began to get more complex titles around 1992. X, Kirby's Dream Land and SML 2 are a good jump from games like SML or Cat Trap/Pitman.

Did anyone here ever own this whole enchilada back in the mid-90s, especially when the 32X cost hundreds of dollars?

I only knew of one kid who got a 32X for his Megadrive, but that was after the system failed and the price crashed.

Can we just have a thread about how fucking beautiful this game is?

The developers paid so much attention to detail in this game.

What does /vr/ think of this game?

It doesn't deserve as much love as it gets but it also do doesn't deserve the hate it gets. It's bland but fun.

My main gripes with it is that the plot sounds like it was made up as they went along. The big bad is never mentioned till the last fourth.

I genuinely believe it's possibly Kojima's most interesting work when it comes to integrating decent food for thought and actual science with B-movies.
Like all Kojima's games, it shamelessly squanders its true potential to be a truly interesting narrative driven game in favor of "DUDE, AMERICAN KINO REFERENCES LMAO!" and Kojima's terrible sense of humour.
At moments the plot and writing go full retard too, but play it if you want to see some stuff Kojima recycled for the modern MGS games, it's nice to catch all of the things he pulled from Policenauts, and both the art and voice acting are great, the minigames tend to be kind of infuriating though, especially the bomb one.
>>
>>3925662
im half an hour into it now, and OF COURSE you can touch the stewardess' tits and legs, I knew it before I even tried it

goddamn it kojima you silly gook

I am digging the 90s vibe and aesthetic just hope the plot is relevant enough to justify the shtity minigames. OST is decent but nothing special, does the 90s vibe justice.

notMel Gibson seems alright too

Growing up in Japan during the Famicom era, what games would a Japanese kid be guaranteed to own growing up?

Just like most all American kids had owned Contra, Castlevania II, and Punch Out, which games are almost definitely in a Japanese kid's collection? Kusoge included,

So maybe this is the wrong place for this but I thought that I would at least try posting here to gauge interest.

I've been living in Japan for the past two years and it seems like I will be doing so for the foreseeable future. It took me a bit to learn the good places but in the time I have been here I have found a multitude of places selling retro games, consoles and accessories, often complete and in excellent condition for far less than they would cost online.

My question is if anyone on /vr/ would be interested in me locating something and then figuring out how much it would cost to send it to them. I'm not in a big city so the odds of me finding something really rare are pretty low but I could keep my eye out. Alternatively I could take pictures of what is currently available in the local stores and post it here where people can make requests.

Ideally you would be able to find what you are looking for much cheaper than you would on ebay or a specialty import store. I'm not looking to make this my job but I wouldn't do it pro bono either. I'm thinking either a flat rate fee per item or a percentage of the total value. If enough people are interested then I could look into setting up some kind of running list or form where people could make requests.

Anyway, I hope that this doesn't come across as slimy or in poor taste. I just know that there are times I definitely would have liked to have someone in Japan to look into these things for me and I wanted to offer others that opportunity.

It's already past 10 here but I will still be up for a bit to answer questions if anyone is actually curious.

Pic related, unfortunately I don't have a lot of pictures right now but if anyone is interested I can go out and take some this weekend to give you a better idea of what is out there.

I would love that but the problem actually seems to be that it costs a shocking amount to ship anything bigger than single games from Japan. If you can figure out a cheap way of shipping though, that doesn't end up with packages getting lost or damaged I would love to be your retro bud stateside. Been trying to find a cheap Hit Bit FDD with a broken floppy drive (to replace with an FDE) forever kind of like I'd love to hook up with a Euro who could send me an Amiga CD32.
>>
>>3922984
Well I could let you know what I can find. Shipping is definitely what inflates prices so much online.

The cheapest shipping option available is surface mail but that takes 2-3 months and tracking isn't available.

After that it's SAL and Airmail which take about 2 weeks and 1 week respectively but tracking is an additional 410 yen.

The fastest is EMS which always includes tracking but the cheapest price is 2000 yen.

As you said, for a single game the price is probably about 690 yen but for anything more than a few pounds it's usually 2000 to 3000 yen. I've tried looking into cheaper shipping options but my Japanese is still serviceable at best. Hopefully there is an option for individuals and not just businesses.

Man, look at that. That's nice.

I'd just appreciate photos in general, OP. Like, especially of arcades. I'd like to go to japan myself someday too but I'd prefer to learn the language beforehand. Slowly chipping away at that.
