What is that one game you always find yourself going back to despite popular opinion of it?
Psycho Dream for me.
ActRaiser 2
Final Fight 2
Gargoyles
>>3971386
None, I guess I only like popular games. Heresy?

Gex 3D: Enter the Gecko
ITT we complain autistically about petty elements/trends in classic games that don't really affect actual gameplay that much (or at all) but still kind of annoy us.
For me is the boss name label trend that OoT started; it's dumb, pointless, and a lazy substitute for actual mood-building
What's with the //? Does this really need to be a general?
>>3971114
That's a good example of the appropriate frame of mind.
I also dislike when entering a shop building prompts a menu screen instead of showing the actual interior first

Autism is a filthy disease and anyone unfortunate enough to have their mind polluted by it has my sympathy
As time marches on, do you believe that old RPGs will disappear from "greatest RPGs" lists as newer RPGs replace them? Will anyone believe that FF6 and Chrono Trigger is the finest in 30 years?
Pic related, Game Informer's top 25
>>3971058
much of that lists perplexes me
chrono trigger's meme status is strong. I can see it lasting 30 more years
ff6 might become a "hidden gem" in a while
I find it interesting that more than a third of the games in that list aren't RPGs.
>>3971065
What's your cut off point for RPGs?
...and the GBA Banjo Kazooie game prove that Super Mario 3D Land/World could have been made for the Super Nintendo in isometric pre-rendered pseudo 3D?
Hell, Super Mario RPG is already proof of concept. Just change the physics to be more like a Mario platformer. All it really needs to shine then is analog controls.
If you play Sanic 3D Blast on Saturn with the analog pad, it is astonishing how much the experience is improved. It suddenly feels much more fluid and fun to play.
If Nintendo had released an analogue pad for SNES with an isometric, pre-rendered 3Dish Super Mario game, I think it would've been rad and sold gangbusters.
>>3970873
You're probably right.
>>3970876
I heard a rumor there was a 3D Mario prototype in the works based on the FX2 chip prior to Mario 64. But that Miyamoto shut it down because the hardware just wasn't up to the task, he didn't like anything he saw.
I expect that's true, I doubt you could make a worthwhile 3D Mario on FX2. Even with flat 2 poly platforms and a sprite Mario.
Nintento is too cautious sometimes. It holds them back from risky greatness. But also sometimes it prevents terrible blunders...most of the time anyway.
So it would be kinda like Snake n Rattle Roll but without the eating spheres part...
That might be a pain in the butt depending on how the platforming is
This is Vega

aka doki doki panic in japan
No, his name is Mike Bison, a reference to the karate master, Mike Tyson.
his name is dictator, and his servants are named claw and boxer
why did most people throw away their game boxes and manuals in the cartridge days?
>>3970347
because they're just kids toys
Pretty much. Kids aren't very disciplined about putting their toys back in their boxes and NES boxes in particular are pretty crappy really. They got beat up, separated from the carts and thrown away by mom when she was cleaning.
They were made of cheap cardboard and felt disposable.
who /popful/ here?

You just got trolled, son.
Hmm...
Are there any games that come close to this one in terms of solving things by conversations and writing in general?
I've tried Pillars of Eternity but most solutions are just obscure knowledge done by lore checks or what have you or "I'll bash yo face in lol!" instead of clever dialogue.
Please help.
For the record, PoE had troubled development, hence the shit writing. Don't play Tyranny, my nigger.
If you haven't already, play Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 and their expansions. Do not play the "enhanced" editions.
You should also play Fallout 1, 2, and Arcanum. Morrowind, maybe?
>>3969830
Tyranny is bad? How's the Torment game, the new one?
I actually never played through Baldur's Gate 1 and 2. How's the writing? Is talking a viable option "most" of the time? (I'm aware that there will be more combat, don't mind that.)
Cheers to the other solutions, they're due for a replay anyway.
>>3969821
Arcanum. It has pretty awful combat, though.
So just bought a PAL SNES today, and I was wondering if anyone can let me know the quality of repos like these? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Chrono-Trigger-SNES-Super-Nintendo-PAL-UK-English-/192167576114
Is it worth picking up the RPGs which didn't get a PAL release? Will I even be able to play NA games with a flashcart?
Don't bother with repros. If you are going the route of unofficial releases, get a flash cart instead.
>>3969741
Can I play NA releases on an EU SNES? If that is the case I could care less about repos, as long as I get to play the game on the original hardware I'm good.
>>3969818
import adapters / converters exist, generally within the range of £20-40 on ebay.
not an expert on them though so would recommend you do some research before buying one.
What does /vr/ think about the Wario Land series?
>>3968665
It's fun.
i couldn't get into 3
The one for Virtual Boy needs a rerelease. How it hasn't come to 3DS just boggles me.
Aside from the Framemeister and a couple of other expensive options, why do all of the other devices suck so much? I've spent the past few days looking through Amazon and eBay and reading about each device I come across. None of them seem to be worth the money!
Does anybody here own a SCART to HDMI converter that costs under $100 and isn't a piece of crap? I didn't want to bother y'all with this topic, but this is the last straw before I give up and go back to using my small PVM.
Because in a market where demand outstrips supply, you get what you pay for (or less than)
>>3966926
>Does anybody here own a SCART to HDMI converter that costs under $100 and isn't a piece of crap?
No because it doesn't exist.
Framemeister is purpose built for retro consoles and upscales on a frame-by-frame basis and is actually a powerful bit of kit. The only issues with the Framemeister is sources that switch resolution in-game which can cause it to temporarily go out of sync. This is a minority of games though.
The Open Source Scan Converter is cheaper and debatably better but requires more setup and is less user-friendly. It works better with some sources more than others whilst the Framemeister is pretty great across the board.
QUESTION:
So I'm thinking about getting something like this, however I don't even know if I should, or need to. Does this make the game look better, or just run at the right speed?
is there anything more tedious than the first couple of hours of older rpgs?
>>3966924
Yeah, the first couple of hours in post-SNES RPGs, where the whole thing at best is 90% cutscenes, 10% gameplay.
>>3966924
Yes, the last couple of hours of any RPG.
>>3966924
Yes. Try getting the maximum amount of points in the Desert Bus minigame from Penn and Teller's Smoke and Mirrors.
You have to drive all the way from Tuscon, Arizona to Las Vegas, Nevada at a top speed of 45 MPH. There's no traffic, hardly anything to look at, and if you go off-road, you stall and get towed all the way back to Tuscon (in real time, no less). Assuming you don't get towed, the drive takes eight hours, and you need to be alert and active the whole time. Reaching Vegas gets you one point, and driving all the way back to Tuscon gets you another. Unless you've sped the game up using tools, it will take you 33 days of continuous play to reach the maximum score of 99.
Plok 64 when?
>>3966876
Redpill me on this.
>>3966890
The red pill makes you shit your pants. The blue sucks it back up inside you.
>>3966890
Plok fansite in the '90s (that is still up) campaigned its readers to e-mail the creators of Plok to make a sequel on N64.
Clearly, it did not work.
This is an absolutely fantastic game. Why is it considered the black sheep of the franchise?
>>3966748
It takes a while to get into it and was completely different from the original.
It's too hard for modern gamers. It received very positive reviews at the time. Don't believe the revisionist history.
Historical revisionism from emulator babbies
They gave up after 5 minutes since it's different than other Zelda games and harder too
