I'm in the market for a Dreamcast and I stumbled upon a BIOS modded one which should be completely region free. Is it worth it for a couple dozen bucks more?

How is the BIOS mod even done?

If you mess with BIOS it will break the console.
>>
>>3969621
>Is it worth it
It boggles the mind why people ask this. As if we some how know how important it is to you and how much you are willing/able to spend.

There are different ways of doing the mod. You can do anything from a simple replacement to dual boot with a switch. You can do it with lots of wires running all over the place held in place by hot glue or you can do it neatly.
>>
>>3969621
I don't know what BIOS is, but we used to have one that would play anything and it was fucking awesome. At the time, PS2 and Gamecube were just hitting their stride of good titles, but we always ended up playing the fucking dreamcast instead.

Only played sorcerer's stone, first when I was a kid, and found it very hard. I gave up and ended up using cheats to get through the game. I didn't appreciate it at all but today I realize it's a great game and I just didn't understand how to not suck at RPGs back then. Some of the best music on the platform imo

They're good.
>>
They're really good. Harry Potter lends itself extremely well to RPG gameplay, I really can't understand why it ended up being a call of duty esque series of games. The adventure games were good too, but these two (and the GBA Prisoner of Azkaban game) had a lot more gameplay, a lot more exploring, and followed the book's story much more closely to boot.

The graphics were amazing too, especially in Chamber. The final showdown at the eponymous chamber had pseudo water reflection effects and amazing sprite work for the basilisk, for Harry, for the sword, for Tom Riddle, it was all done extremely well and I was amazed the GBC could pull it off. Truly worthy of being the last game on the platform, shame I can't find a decent screenshot of that.

The first Zelda is a bad, bad game, and here's why.
1) Enemies spawn from the edges of the screen, thus you get hit while moving screens, without being able to do anything. (You could kill every enemy on every screen, but that slows the game down to a halt).
2a) Shit visuals, straight out of space invaders.
2b) Every object, destructible or not, looks the same, so on your first time through, you have to place a bomb on every wall, and shoot fire on every bush.
3) One overworld soundtrack
This is such a shitboring game, it's hard to believe anything came out of it. Then again, I guess people at the time just had nothing else to play, so they had no choice.

Remember when flea markets sold this for like $50 back in like 2007? So glad I got mine then.

>>

Nah but this was a flea market. I also paid $50 for the console with cables, a controller and Mario/Duck Hunt. Flea markets are now selling them for $150
>>
>>3964593
I was finding those left and right for less than $20 in thirft stores/flea markets around 2007, with games and controllers/hook ups.

Even my local retro store had crazy good deals for the time. Maybe my area was just had a delayed reaction to the retro craze, there was a plentiful supply.

Wish I still lived there, it was the best town I ever found retro stuff in... I doubt it's survived, though.

Electroluminescent Edition

This is the thread in which we discuss comfy portable game systems, such as the GameBoy and GameGear.

Think of this kind of like a Game Boy general, except handheld systems from any manufacturer can be discussed, be they from Nintendo, Sega, Atari or any obscure off brand, as well as LCD games. Portable consoles like the Turbo Express and Nomad can be discussed as hardware, though game discussion belongs in their respective consoles' threads. Discussing clones are also welcome so long as the other criteria are met.

Discussion of handheld repairs, mods and aftermarket add-ons are also welcome, though for more in-depth repair advice the repair general is recommended.

Handheld emulator boxes (Dingoo, JXD S7800B, modded PSP) are a gray area and should be discussed only in regards to their use for the emulation of retro games.

Can't go wrong with Tetris DX.

I haven't played it, but Pokémon Puzzle Challenge is supposed to be good. It's pretty much a handheld version of Puzzle League.

Hey again all those who are interested.

I live in Japan and recently I've decided to try looking for retro games for people on /vr/ upon request.

If you want to get in touch with me please email [email protected] or leave a message in this thread.

If you just want to browse the pictures please check out this Google Photo link (the "." has been removed to get past the spam filter):https://goo gl/photos/ATyrqsTrsxCa3JLcA

Quick breakdown:

1. I post pictures in these threads when I take trips to a retro store (other Japanons are welcome to post too but please put that in your posts so people don't get confused who is who)

2. Let me know via email if you are looking for something and I will get back to you when/if I see it.

3. I tell you the cost/shipping estimate and charge a 10% commission (this might have to go up if I do a lot of these because I can only do so much while working full time).

4. If you are okay with the price, send a payment to my paypal account and I'll send you your game/hardware.

5. You get your stuff and appreciate it more than the person who sold it to a secondhand shop.

If nothing else, I hope that people at least enjoy the pictures.

Sorry, but tonight's post is mostly to update people on my trip to the store tonight. I don't have many new pictures but I'll post what I do have.

For the anon that asked about R-Type and Outrun, they are each 2980 yen (after tax). If you're interested in one or both of them please send me an email and I'll give you a shipping estimate.

I also saw Fire Emblem: Mystery of the emblem for 600 yen and Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War for 1400 yen.

If anyone is interested in a Pri-fun I picked up that one from the last thread for 980 yen but if not then I might just hook it up to my Saturn and print some stills.

I don't want to pick up too much stuff until I've sent the things I bought already.

It's a great little system, but I sure as shit wouldn't pay the prices I see on ebay. Just emulate.
>>
>>3947698
Not really. Can't understand why you'd buy an old console like that anyway, the experiences are not contained in the plastic and metal. Emulate Ninja Spirit and Military Madness and move on, more or less.

>>

>>
>>3983056
>modern gamers

This has nothing to do with it.

Retards who can't into perspective and 3D space have always been the problem.
>>
>>3983056

In cinematic horror games built around fixed camera angle you need a uniform sense of direction. You can't keep having to reoriant yourself while try to do stuff especially if there are monsters present.

There not without problems but if the game is built to accommodate them like RE and so many others are then they shouldn't be an issue

>why do modern gamers hate them so much?

Because they expect every game to be a fast paced action DMC combo fest.

What a waste of my time. This is the worst fighting game I've played on the Dreamcast. It's the worst fighting game ever. The characters are incredibly stupid. The graphics are incredibly Super Nintendo. So stupid. It's the dumbest fighing game ever.
It's a complete Street Fighter rip-off. It's made by Capcom. They're ripping themselves off.
I can't believe you're going to recommend this game to people.
