>tfw megaman 2 is the only one i can beat
How are all the others so much harder?
34 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
i think megaman x series from the snes are somehow easier to beat as you have more freedom in movement, it feels that whenever i die is because of my lack of skill, rather than blaming the engine as i usually think when i drop on earlier megaman versions
>>
Because you played on Normal.

It's an easier difficulty put in for weak gaijin.
>>
>>4049436
They edited 2 for the US version to make it much easier. No, seriously.

Hard mode is the Japanese original, more in line with the other versions of the game. Normal is actually more of an "easy mode" than anything else.

Are there other historical games that play like Pirates! or Sword of the Samurai?
Preferrably open world, starting out as a weakling and gaining riches and status, lots of paths to choose etc.

Hello vr
I know we can play japanese hucards on turbografx with a converter.
What about the other way around? Is there a way to play US games on the japanese pc engine?
11 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>

Yes
>>
>>4048990
only with a converter that states it can do that. There is region lockout on the japanese system to prevent playing of american games
>>
>>4048990
Does anyone here even own the converter pictured? I have a Kisado converter, but I never knew there were any others out there.

Cute. <autism>Maybe unintentionally, but it makes a lot of sense, too. If something like Carmageddon were real, most of the contestants would be teenagers. That's the age at which they'd get into it and they wouldn't exactly have a chance to grow up.</autism>

Anyone here run RetroArch on an XP machine? Apparently the newest versions don't compile properly and the cores are incompatible, so if you have an installation that works, holla.

Also, Retroarch thread I guess.

On XP latest didn't work for me until putting manifest file into the directory.

they dont release pre compiled w32 binaries?
perhaps its just the compiling that wont work for whatever reason.
isnt an emulator a rather standalone software? its not like it would depend on directx12 or windows 10 APIs or wtf

windows xp is the retropc OS, a shame if retroarch really wont work on it
>>
>>4048206
yeah, but do the cores work? I loaded mine up into the latest (and just used a manifest from an old build), but when I try to open a core, it doesn't work.

This game is so fucking good. Playing it for the first time and just made it to hydroponics. It's so well designed. It literally could come out today and be a top game if the hit detection was fixed and the map had more info

it's a timeless classic, best of the best
>>
I recently beat it, fucking great game. The melee combat is wonky, but the laser rapier kicks ass.
One of my new favorites. Half of the reason I love it so much is the sound design and the writing.
Once you get to a certain point in the plot, the sound work really starts to shine.

Is the first one worth playing? How's the GOG port? I'm still working on my tolerance for retro jank.
>>
It's a good ride, but the game is pretty unbalanced and doesn't feel completely playtested. PSI powers only really exist so you can challenge yourself, the game alternates between leaving you scavenging for ammo and having more ammo than you can possibly use, many abilities aren't worth the investment, the majority of PSI powers are completely worthless, and the game lets you roam free only to give you a railroad plot to follow. Don't get me started on how much the Body of the Many onward sucked.

6-7/10 game, needed some polish.

Connecting laptop to CRT TV.

How good are these cheap Chinese VGA to Composite/S-Video adapters you find on AliExpres?

It's not like I'm using some professional PVM or anything, it's an okay 32" TV, but it can't be awful right?

Is there any noticeable input lag?

Uh, I had one similar to that lying around at my parents house and connected an old laptop to an old CRT TV I have on my room there...

It "works", I guess. You CAN play games on it. But if I hadn't had it at hand in the first place I wouldn't have spent money on it. It sucks.

The lowest resolution it'll let me go is 480p, which when shrunken down to a lower res S-Video signal looks BLURRY. Color fidelity is all wrong (everything looks blown out, and I mean REALLY blown out, not just the usual /vr/ autistic standars... whole color ranges are lost, must adjust color setting on video card panel just to make movies watchable). Also, the refresh rate can't be changed and is way too low for videogames, expect lots of tearing.

I say, if you're going to spend money, spend it on something that's at least made for your specific usecase. Check pic related ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/192116647418?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT ), I got it recently and I'm going to test it next time I visit my parents' house where the rest of the setup is.

Also, you may want to check this:

>>
It's garbage, don't get it
>>
>>4047536
It will look the same or worse than just emulating using your laptop's built-in screen because they only do 480i ever. Any resolution you throw at it will be converted to 480i, and it is incapable of a non-interlaced 240p signal. So you will never get authentic scan lines using it, even on SD CRTs. It is decent for watching movies though, if your CRT has a larger screen than your laptop.

What are /vr/'s thoughts on the Wonder Boy series? What's your favorite game in the franchise?
Pic related for me. What the fuck is up with that Charm system, though?

>>
>>4047338
It's my favorite as well; tons of personality and not that challenging.

The charm system is a cute way of portraying the "curse" aspect of the storyline, but granted: it's a bit frustrating at first until you stock enough charm stones

3DO actually had a bunch of good games, Jaguar had Rayman, Alien vs Predator and that one Doom port.
>>
But 3DO was great. Why do all you underage AVGN fans hate it? Jaguar I can understand, but 3DO was excellent.

Do somebody know about the Far East Of Eden/Tengai Makyou series? I want to play Tengai Makyou Zero on a SNES emulator but i don't know if there is a translation patch and also the game uses the SPC7110 enhancement chip so I don't know how to sort it out.

I only played the fighting game, pretty cool but also the CPU does some really bullshit input reading.
Would like to try the other games.
>>
Why do you want to play it if you don't even know that it's not translated?
The game is way too Japanese to be translatable and technical obstacles do the rest.
>>
BSNES or higan or something. Also a quick google would have given you this: http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=23162.0

It's currently in testing, translated by the dude who translated the GBA game.

Welcome to the Retro Game Gauntlet, gentlemen.

Start at NES, and work through in the following order:
NES
SNES
GB/GBC
Megadrive/Genesis
Turbografx16
DOS
NeoGeo
GBA
Commodore 64
Playstation 1

You have three days to complete the game without assistance (each game gets three days, though RPGs are allowed a week due to length).

Select your system here:
http://s3kr.it/gauntlet.html

You can also do it manually if you don't trust the random number generator:
http://s3kr.it/systems/

Rules:
1) Savestates are allowed ONLY for the purpose of taking screenshots and ONLY if your emulator/game in question does not have a pause function.
2) Rerolls are allowed under the following conditions:
-The game you get requires some sort of hardware functionality that cannot be accurately emulated to complete (eg, Boktai)
-The game would otherwise require cheats, hacks, or alteration of the software to complete due to a bug (eg, Cheetahmen II)
For games that have a high score or no end, the rule is
>if no high score has been established, set a goal and beat it
>if you.re playing something another anon already has a high score on, beat their high score
>if you are playing extended rpgs/pokemon/whatever you get a week (Depending on the game: needs to be asked in thread)

AND BRING ME SCREENSHOTS PARKER

IRC channel: #gauntlet on irc.rizon.net (Mibbit link on site)

NEW RULES/GUIDELINES TO POSTING IN THE GAUNTLET THREADS:

-Do not post screenshots every other screen, make them few and meaningful
-Do not start a new thread before current one bump limit is exceeded

It's fantastic, but a lot of people don't like the change in physics for SMB1 (it's a really minor thing though, I doubt most people actually noticed it while playing, most just read about it and proceeded to notice later).
SMB2 is probably the best looking of the remakes.
SMB3 also looks pretty good but sadly it's missing some of the trademark art direction elements, like the transparent powerup signs on the sky, or the spacey background on underground levels and the cool silver terrain texture.
I also think the music on the NES original (SMB3) is better, especially the ending theme, that's not to say the SNES one isn't good, but it could have been better, it's just okay.
SMW has an actual separate sprite for Luigi on this collection.

I disagree that it's minor. The physics feel completely different. But I've played a lot of SMB and blow through the original like nothing whenever I pick it up.
