What if someone remade space invaders as if it were a next gen game?
So the other day I went to the carnival and they had a cool looking space invaders arcade game with a huge vertical monitor. You used those guns you see nowadays for rail-shootan arcade games and shoot the invaders. It was totally wicked.
>>4065094
They did.
>>4065094
they remade it a bunch of times
but which SPACE INVADER is the best???
What arcade-style Genesis/Mega Drive games would you say are as good as, if not better than, actual arcade games?
>>4065016
Ghouls 'n Ghosts
treasure games
>in b4 anti-treasure fag REEEEE
>>4065048
Every chest contains a trap: The game.
You can only choose one and explain why
There are literally 0 ports that are superior on N64.

>that reload animation for the single action sniper rifle

good day /vr/, any recommendations on arcaidish racing games like outrun?
games from the sixth generation are also more then welcome
Outrun isn't a racing game though
This is DOPE
>sixth generation are also more then welcome
You re missing the point of this board.
>crt shaders can't look goo-
>walk a few feet away from monitor
>still can see the scanlines
Nah, it's still a shitty shader and doesn't, will never look like a real CRT.
>>4063904
who says the ideal is to look like a CRT? its simply another way of hiding the horrible scaling artifacts on an LCD.
>>4063904
not saying its as good as a CRT, but it is much much better (especially in motion) than a flat LCD
Why was the NES port so shitty?
Hardware gimmicks don't compensate for limited memory especially on one screen games.
>>4063846
The NES is limited hardware wise and is inferior to the arcade board especially since the board was created for the game unlike the NES which was just created for 8 bit games.
The NES was a hundred dollar console and arcade machines were a few thousand dollars.
Better than any other home port until Dk64.
Favorite arcade games of the 80's? I'm on a major arcade kick lately and I've fallen in love with Tempest. Gyruss is also amazing
>>4063745
Joust. Love it, even own the arcade machine, as well as Joust 2. Chasing and beating your high scores is fun.
I love vector games so much. So happy to have a Vectrex.
It came with Sonic 3D Blast and Virtua Fighter II.
I usually only play JRPGs but those seem quite expensive for this console.
So I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to get into 2D Fighters and Shmups/BulletHell games.
Does /vr/ have any recommendations for me? Imports are fine, especially if the NA version is expensive.
>>4063236
It only has a handful of exclusives (Panzer Dragoon series notably), everything else are poor arcade conversions that you'd have an easier time playing on MAME.
But hey, if you want to play Metal Slug running at 8fps with half the animation missing, be my guest.
>>4063239
At least you won't have to deal with the horrid Input Lag on MAME and the ass backwards anti-user ROM system.
>>4063239 is right about Panzer Dragoon series, give these a try.
Saga is stupidly expensive but just mod your Saturn.
He's wrong about Saturn having poor arcade conversions, they were always praised, and MAME is still emulation so you don't want to deal with all that laggy shit.
The console versions of these fighters have some extra features that the arcade originals lack, and if you have a buddy who also enjoys fighting games, Saturn is the best couch co-op console for them, besides Neo Geo.
If you want the best of the best on Saturn you'll need a RAM cart, games like Vampire Savior and Street Fighter Alpha 3 use it.
Saturn also has good SNK fighters like Real Bout Special, Fatal Fury 3, KOF.
Those games are all pretty inexpensive in their japanese versions.
Then there are ports of games that don't use the extra RAM; so they are missing a few frames of animation, but still pretty legit, and much better than the PS1 ports, games like SFA 2/Street Fighter Collection, Night Warriors (this one has full animation for mirror matches), great ports that play like the arcade originals and look virtually the same, and again inexpensive on their japanese editions.
Does Dragon Quest have any unique elements that make it a valuable game even today? Or is it's legacy firmly rooted in "making CRPGs accessible to the mainstream" and "it was good for the time?"

I can't think of many games that focuses into the world as DQ does. Travelling to new towns is actually fun instead of 'plot required'.
>>4063073
You're only here to start a fight.
Back in the day it was very groundbreaking, but today it's nothing special. It doesn't help that the latest 4 or 5 entries make a point of being as nostalgic and classical as possible. Its overall contribution to the genre is insane though.
IV does some interesting things with narrative that I haven't seen replicated before.
What's the best Battletoads game?
>>4062524
Battletoads
>>4062538
/thread, nice going OP
Anyone who says arcade Battletoads is following a meme. NES Battletoads seamlessly blends so many adjacent styles of gameplay to make such a flawlessly great experience. The only other game that comes close to that arcade pick up and play action is Battletoads & Double Dragon.
Hey all. What is SEGA Forever? Also anyone got a rip of the tape? I'd like to add it to my library as a playlist/album, I think it'd be cool. inb4 just get the songs individually.
Is it going to be some new subscription service for retro gaming?
>>4061648
>he didn't get one
Seeing shining force included on there makes me cry, good times
I collect tapes.
Would like to own that thing.
Just finished this, having found out it got rereleased semi-recently after so many years of the PC version being unplayable on modern hardware
I'd wanted to get into it since I played a demo as a kid but couldn't due to the aforementioned reason, and man do I regret waiting so long now
How does /vr/ feel about it?Vivienne best girl
I can't kill the final boss
>>4062034
you have to either, use your special attack at just the right angle to hit him orjust block his fireballs the shield you should have reflects them and despite being a giant ass demon he is actually WEAK to his own magic
>>4061071
I bought this on gog years a go, looked like garbage compared to when I played it near release so I haven't bothered much with it. I'll have to check out the re release.
If you've never played pic related on a snes with a crt, can you really say that you know how mario controls and how the game feels? I won't argue that you can say you beat the game because input lag makes things more difficult, but for example, could you properly review the game and critique anything about the controls or the handling of the game at all?
Why does Nintendo's re-releases of their old titles often include lag? Is it something inherent to emulation? I own essentially every format that mario world was released in and even today the least laggy re-release is the gba port.
When I play the game on the new 3ds vc it feels responsive and fun but when I eventually play on the snes again It feels vastly more responsive. Even though in theory the lag is negligible on the 3DS, the original it still feels like unmatched perfection in my hands. I feel like I can be more precise, take more risks in platforming in the game, etc.
>>4060930
agree
>>4060930
it's all in your head
I played it that way 20 years ago.
Perhaps the greatest game of all time in my book. The physics of the game are campy, however the story that spans the 3 games is quite impressive in depth of history to the areas you discover as well as the underlying plot lines.
Calling it the greatest game of all time is quite the stretch, but I do love the Marathon games. I just wish M2 and M3 had background music during the levels. It made many of the levels kinda boring to play imo.
>>4059391
tfw aleph one is shit
Playing the first game on Mac using a modern WASD setup would not be bad if it wasn't for the fact that looking down stops the player. M1A1 is more enjoyable (despite literally being a "duct tape" hack job)
At least M2 is more tolerable, but you still have to use the keyboard to alternate fire.
I actually enjoy playing infinity on my G3 than playing it on A1.
>the game is called Age of Empires
>you barely get to build up one city
>Age of Kings
>you don't build a king
