Is it genuinely that hard or am I just retarded? Seems that I can't make any progress without the clue book. Also old-school games like the other two or the Savage Frontier Saga.

Make sure you have two pure fighters in the frontline with maxed strength, dexerity and constitution. Have them dual-wield a long sword and a short sword. Keep two magical maces in the inventory for pierce resistant enemies.
Don't use any NPCs until EoB3 as they reduce exp gain.
Don't bother with ranged weapons. Their damage is not worth the tedium of having to pick the ammo back up again after every single battle.
In the first game there is no identify spell so use the stat screen to figure out the effects of magical items.
Keep some extra items oof each type in your inventory for puzzles.
The best tips you can have are:
1. Use or draw a map. It's an old school dungeon crawler, you're going to get lost.
2. The most dangerous area is the spider level on floor 5. Getting poisoned is essentially a death sentence early in the game. A 7th level Cleric can remove the poison, but you won't be by then. Your only options are finding antidote potions (few and far between) or making it to the Dwarven town and having the Cleric remove it off of one of your party members. The latter can be assisted by the second level Cleric spell Slow Poison, giving you a little more time between damage ticks (but you still can't rest and will ultimately die from it).
3. Make sure you have a balanced party. There are doors that can be picked and wasting keys on them can screw you later. Having no Cleric means no access to Create Food & Water (important!), Neutralize Poison and Raise Dead; along with no heal on rest option. Mage spells like Stoneskin and Haste become invaluable in tougher encounters later. Also, try for a variety of races. There are runes that only specific races can read. Elves are needed to read the Drow runes, Gnomes to read the Kobold ones (for some reason...), Dwarves to read the Dwarven ones, et cetera.
Any experience with this emulator?

Why bother when we have Demul?
> He reads EGM over GamePro

>he reads gamepro over next generation

Uk reader here. Never read EGM, but I bought a few copies of Game Pro in John Menzies in the 90s.
Awful magazine. The small size seemed like a cost cutting exercise, the layout was ugly (full graphic zoom in backgrounds etc) but the reviews were the worst thing about it. They were so brief, around 200 words or less and really offered nothing.
Compare that to a magazine from Future publishing in the UK, such as Super Play, and it seems like the US audience was being insulted
I don't read
Hello /vr/
Does anybody managed to make Dagoth Moor Zoological Gardens demo work on period correct machine? For some reason every copy on this demo crashes on start with memory address error.
System specs: PIII 600 Katmai, Asus P3B-F, 128 megs SDRAM single stick, GF256 SDR, Windows 98 SE.
Is there something I don't know? Like some sort of library file or something is missing?
Also, retro tech demos thread.

What's the best way to play DQ 1-3 in English these days? GBC remakes or SNES remakes?
>>4069235
SNES
>>4069235
Snes. Those have the best graphics and music. DQIII on snes looks great as it was made in the DQVI engine.
threadjack: what's the best way to play FF4?
Because Civilization is for me, one of the best strategy games I've ever played. Share your most amazing, curious, random/funny moments or alternate earth timelines created while playing the first game of civ. For example I played as the Russians, I managed to discover nuclear weapons by 1900, the Aztecs and Americans had good relations as countries and the Zulus were killing some poor Frenchies.
I play the SNES version from time to time, it plays well on a CFW'd PSP or with a bluetooth controller. Also I find the Graphics to be easier to distinguish.
It is well known that the enemy AI cheats, but did you know that their bombers need not abide to the laws of gravity? I was cracking down on the Aztecs in the late endgame, miraculously they also managed to discover bombers, but it was already too late for them and their production capacity was laughable at best. When they sent out a couple of them from their last city, I wanted to humiliate them by forcing them to crash, so I surrounded their city with 8 of my own bombers, completely cutting off the way for them.
Well, the enemy bombers tried to retreat to the city in their 2nd turn in the air, moving up towards my bombers and then just... stayed there.
Going to try pic related for the first time. Tips for a beginner?

TRADER GUIDE (Ali)
>carpets from instabul trade with art from athens
>bu used venetian galeass
>only needs 45 crew all set to navigate
>No guns max cargo space
>trade trade trade
>get enough money to do the madeira gold lubeck silver market manipulation trick
>max out money
>use money to invest inports
>investing in ports develops their economy (means they offer more stuff to trade sometimes) and gives trader fame while making them loyal to your country (good if war breaks out)
>it pisses off other countries when you invest in their ports so do it sparingly and stick to mainly neutral ports
>you can invest 50k in the trading market and another 50k the ship yard each month (can repeat at the first of the month regardless)
>win game
PIRATE GUIDE(Catalina, Otto)
>Get galleon
>upgrade to venetian galeass as soon as possible
>400 crew
>don't even bother with guns
>set crew to 100% combat immediately before you attack
>melee the enemy flagship but do not board it
> win battles
>get fame
>advance plot
>win game
If you want to challenge yourself, you can get good at duels. its like rock paper scissors - look it up. But basically get the best equipment you can (sword and armor) board ships and challenge the enemy commodore to a duel. Do this with with low combat level merchant fleet commodores at first until you get experience. The best equipment is the Crusader armor at riga, and Crusader sword at Timbuktu found in the item shops at 2 am (stores offer an extra item in some places at 2 am you can tell the lady at the inn to wake you up for that). They are expensive, the money is best earned by trading. You only need this to take down the strongest military convoys and pirates. (I never bother with managing a fleet, or guns just max one ship out with crew and melee or duel to death - you need the max crew you can get to force your way on bard and force a duel).
You have to play Joao Franco for your first play through. His storyline is the default one

ADVENTURER(Pitero,Joao, Mercator)
Sign up with a map guild and discovery guild before leaving Europe (Mercator is already assigned a map guild and pietro a discovery guild by the story).
You will make your first discoveries by sailing down the Nile. Sell them back to your discovery patrons and buy a new ship - or follow the story and trade a bit.
The ships you will want to trade up to are the carrack or the nao(roughly 40 days at sea each) you will want about 10% of the crewon look out, 90% on navigation.
These are both good for the first 40% of the game.
The two other ships you may want to move on to are the the trireme rowing ships (because the wind stops or slows at sea some times and can fuck you over)venetian galeass cargo space for food and water and the LaReale excellent speed - simply the best ship for adventurers.
the La Reale is a special ship that can only be built by investing a port (look up the special ships)
Then just sail around the globe and press select now and then, and gradually map out the world and stop at villages and give them food - the highest friendship level with villagers you should ever need is 55 most can be found with 15. There is only one discovery per village.
You can land anywhere (just like landing at a village) and find water. Food is hard to come by so be careful. You will want to get a cat. i know you can get them in Cairo (sail around the horn of Africa) and china. Rat poison might do (they eat your food). Lime juice prevents scurvy (monitor your sailors health with L and R and simply fire them all and hire new when they get sickly). Undeveloped ports with shitty economies produce less sailors. So keep this in mind. You can hire once a day. And go to the inn wake up at 5 pm head to the cafe and do it again - sailors on adventures get attacked by monsters and run off with the natives, and it gets rather frustrating at times.
Selling discoveries and reporting to your cartographer guild get you fame and cash.
Is Bomberman the most prolific character? He has a presence, usually several games, on every system since the NES right? Is there another who has a similar ubiquitousness?

ALLAHU AKBAR
Please help! I need to find this game's name, cause i want to play it but i just remember a few things, hope you can help me guys.
It's this game for Psx it's about an Astronaut, it looks pretty much arcade, you have this gun and have to kill every alien comes to you, they come in waves and they're green with red eyes (they're all cartoonns) and there are also some sort of orange bats that attack you at the same time, the little white astronaut can catch some powerups for his gun and extra lifes . Yu just have to get up and down at the stage wich contains different floors so you can run away form the aliens. I just can't remember this game's name, please help!
>>4068978
Was this on a compilation disk or was it it's own game? The way you describe it as looking like a arcade game is confusing.
>>4068986
it's a full game
>>4068992
It´s a 2D game, it's really simple. i Just don't remember it's name :P
Is there any difference between a gameshark and an action replay 4M plus once flashed with Pseudo Saturn Kai?
The Gameshark doesn't have any RAM expansion capability.
>>4068640
Game Shark doesn't act as a region bypass either.
>>4068673
actually it does you just have to hold down some buttons. Still the AR has the ram shit so there's no reason no to get that instead
This was Enix's best game.
False. Pic related is.
Enix was a publisher, not a developer

It's the best game they published.
How do I download libretro cores manually to use on Retroarch?
I feel like a retard but all the GitHub shit confuses the hell out of me.

I can't think of a better third person action game from the 5th gen with better melee combat.Fuck that snake boss though.
>>4067712
I found the combat in 2 much better however it's worse in pretty much every other regard. Nightmare Creatures has one of the most amazing atmospheres in a game I've ever played, it really feels like you're playing through a lost 19th century horror story at times.
