Hey VR,
first time making a thread, hope I don't get anything wrong or offend anyone.
So I just started playing Nethack, played rogue or something like it on my dad's mac 15-20years ago and this brought back the memories. Generally this type of game and am enjoying it but am not starting to get frustrated. Far too little information, so many things just kill you, I get so few scrolls of identification and yet everything, including those scrolls, should really be indentified first, or you risk suddenly being severly punished. Reading the "spoilers" on the wikis gives some much needed hints on how to get somewhere with this, but they are literally just hints (really not spoilers), and then I am getting the hang of this, walk down the steps to level 7, only to be instantly killed by Yeenoghu (apparently spawned by me about 20 attempts ago while quaffing from a fountain).
Seriously wtf!! I like my games challenging, but it sucks to just be killed out of nowhere all the time with basically no chance of avoiding it.
Since there are meant to be many clones out there, is there a version of rogue that isn't quite so randomly unfair and actually gives me a little bit more information about the items and their status that I encounter?
Also general discussion if you think games like nethack are flawed or just should be learned through intense trial and error.
Larn123 was my preferred game. Never liked Nethack compared to larn, then again I was 10 or something. There is a learning curve to knowing the monsters and what to type to cast the spells, but I remember having a ton of fun playing it.

>Yeenoghu
Goddamn Yeenoghu. That's super rare, btw, but he fucked me up once too before I was prepared to take his triple-flail dog-ass down.
The key to nethack is two fold:
1) take notes on EVERYTHING you observe. I have a file of notes over 2000 lines long that I still update and consult while playing.
2) very minor spoilerthere is an oracle not too far into the dungeon; find her and give her money, she'll give you major clues. Fortune cookies are also terrific sources of information. Most features of the game are hinted at by these means, although sometimes cryptically. Once again, write EVERYTHING down.
remember, dying is part of the fun.
also, play as a dwarven valkyrie until you can ascend. you dark vision, gnomes and dwarves are friendly, you can carry a shit ton of stuff, and combat is usually simple melee.
When exactly did you realize Saturn did lose against PS1, with no hopes of coming back?

A dinner plate for a controller. Noice.
There are certain games for every system that get talked about to death. The best ones and the worst ones. But what about the ones in between? Let's have a thread for those 5s, 6s and 7s from your past. Games that didn't change your life but that you still cozied up with on a weekend or summer vacation.
Mystaria is so quintessential for early Saturn aesthetics, it's a kind of mediocre SRPG that we played to fill the Shining Force void. People seemed to like it on release but it was so quickly overshadowed by superior entries in the genre for Saturn as well as PSX.
it's short, weird and easy and I do recommend it
Cool Boarders 2 had serious flaws but I had a great time with it.
Unfortunately it's one of those games no one seems to remember today, as it probably got "replaced" with SSX.

I remember this. I never had a psx back then and preferred it to n64's 1080 (found snowboard kids way later) ironically, I fucking hate snowboarding
Do I talk about retro gaming comics on /vr/ or /co/?
On /vr/.
Either one you like. They belong on both.
What was it like owning demos back in the day? Tfw playing MediEvil 2 and Spider-Man all the time, repeating the beginning level always felt refreshing.
Kinda neat to see what a game was like. Most people I know got more enjoyment out of the little hidden bits, like that one demo disc that had the music video to Korn's Got The Life buried in there.
Before demo CDs appeared on consoles, I used to buy magazines that came with CD-ROMs full of demos for PC. It was kind of a scam because it said "includes [x game] complete!" and it was also just a demo.
On principle demos are great because they let you test games for free. Most of my demo discs were kinda shitty though.
The one demo disc I actually remember enjoying was the Nights sampler on Saturn.
When I got my Saturn, I couldn't get it with any game because the shop I got it from just didn't have any Saturn games in stock, the system itself was hard to find here.
So it came with a Saturn demo CD (included Clockwork Knight, Die Hard Trilogy and others), and the Nights sampler.
Nights was actually more generous than most other demos, it let you play 2 levels, one with each character, and they were fun as hell. Nights is also an arcade kind of game so replaying the levels was fun.
Eventually I got the full game and it felt massive, I was used to play the same 2 levels over and over.

Why?
TFW playing through a game in your childhood nd never learning anything about musterious characters.

Batman and Flash? Who's Flash? Why are they together? Why Flash has Bat ears? Why are they tiny?
Only in aduldhood, thanks to internet you learn you played a chinese sprite hack.
Something something retro

ITT: retro games you've never ever beaten (and you tried)

I got close as a kid but the final dude has multiple forms and got me close to his end, hard game but i loved it as a kid.
Actraiser and the Lion King. The Lion King especially frustrated me because I didn't even enjoy playing it; I just felt compelled to put it behind me.
Flying Warriors on the NES
also Ninja Gaiden, I ended up deciding other games would better justify my time than doing that same shitty level set over and over just to die at Jaquio and go all the way back.
Can we talk about suffering for a moment
4th of July thread, lets celebrate
Go to Google maps, pick a place anywhere in the USA where you do not live.
Search for a retro game store in the area, not named Gamestop or Goodwill.
Post best picture of inside and impressions based on the images.
Limit 1 store/pic per anon, but you can comment on other images.

Why the fuck would I want to waste my time doing that?
Here, I'll start. Chose a place called 8-bit Retro Video Games in New Mexico. Can't say anything about the prices, but setup's nice with two arcade cabinets.

because ... America! A random place to keep everyone anonymous and non-Americans can join in and see what America's got.
What the fuck is this thread?
Crusaders of Might and Magic
Suggest some good starter stats for fallout 2 as well as some interesting mods for it.
>>4095131
Any stat, as long as in had AGI at least 6, the higher the better. I also recommend INT no lower then 5 and at least one combat perk (the best option for someone new is guns). I also like speech for quest related reasons. Make sure CHA and AGI are even numbers, as you get the bonus for every 2 points you spend.
Don't take fast shoot on your first playthrough.

Not him but I just got FO1,2, and Tactics on the Steam Summer Goy Sale. Any useful tips for 1? I'm interested in concentrating on energy weapons at some point.

If you've read Season of Sakura you've read every VN ever. All anime girl archetypes of the past 30 years show up here in this game, all of them, no exceptions. There's no reason to pick up new VNs anymore.
So play older ones like Tenshi-tachi no Gogo. Or ones without girls.
>>4094802
Season of the Sakura was a pretty cool visual novel. I wish I bought in its day. I still want it too. Shame there wasn't more with not-Katsuragi Misato. Even back then I recognized the Evangelion, St. Tail, and Rayearth ripoffs but I think part of the charm was that it took the characters and jammed them into the same school setting.
I think there are plenty of visual novels that offers stories that are different from just school love. I've gone through a few that were mystery thrillers, some explore horror, some are fantastical. The venerable Chrono Trigger had a visual novel sequel in Radical Dreamers. I think Elf's Yu-No game is pretty good. The C's Ware titles like Eve Burst Error, Eve: The Lost One, Desire, etc. are compelling too (I have not played Eve Zero yet) that goes beyond character archetypes and focus on their narratives.
I visit my local Walmart (in the middle of nowhere US, they are the center of our lives) and I see they still sell visual novels like The Walking Dead, Life Is Strange, The Wolf Among Us, etc. so I am guessing people are finding reasons to pick up new VNs anyway. I think of the genre like those pulp paperback fiction books you'd find, disposable entertainment where some enjoyment can be had. I think I even read that some of those games won awards, so I guess they are getting recognition even with their anime girl archetypes.

How would you feel about a remake of the first installment in the persona franchise, or the duology?
Personally I don't believe the combat system would mesh well with modern mechanics, so I'll just keep hoping for the Eternal Punishment remaster to get localized.
>>4091994
A complete remake? I'd love it. They really don't need one though, and it's highly unlikely anyway. Atlus will probably just bundle the PSP ports together in a collection and release them on PSN or something because they know it won't get any mainstream success the way P3-P5 did, unfortunately.
The battle system needs to just be scrapped entirely IMO. P1's is just clunky and feels like an unnecessary change to make the game feel less like "SMT with highschool students" and 2's is alright, but the way to get new Personas needs some streamlining.
Do you know how fast I would give ATLUS all my money if they completely remade the P2 duology? Best plot and casts, by far. I'm really sick of the highschool dating sim aspect of Persona.
>>4095326
One of the best things about P2 is how the characters and plot mesh well with the high school setting without delving into a slice of life and dating simulator like the later games. Of course, you can date best boy Jun, but the relationship is subtle and feels realistic for the characters, unlike the rushed 'romance' in P3/4/5. It was nice to have the negotiation option with Jun and Tatsuya as well, it felt like my choice actually affected the gameplay, albeit subtly.
