A platformer in the engine of Sonic R. Would you have played it? Would it have saced the Saturn?
21 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
It would have been a terrible game. The controls for sonic r wouldn't work for a platformer. They barely work for a racing game.
>>
>>4132981
In theory, maybe. They'd have to change up the controls, but after that it could work. The game was certainly nice to look at, I would have played one like this if it worked.
>>
>>4132984
its almost like they optimized the game to not control like a platformer.

So I picked this up again for the first time in over a decade and... I can't even believe how bad I am at it. I was doing moderately okay for the first while, then I hit Chapter XI for the Orcs and I'm completely brickwalled. I can't even get it started half the time but I refuse to use cheats or lower it to Easy.

I just don't understand how I'm even suppose to play this. It's like the AI builds everything faster than I do and has a massive head start.

Why? That's the whole point of easy. You're obviously not ready for more difficult settings.

Also, try to find a strategy guide. It might help.
>>
>>4132773
I only found one guide and it said two things that I'm finding wildly inaccurate for my experience:

>this mission is easy
>they attack frequently but only small weak groups that should be easy to wipe out

They send a group of like three footmen, five archers, a ballista, and a mage like every three minutes.

Why do people shit on the former, despite the fact that it's essentially a software version of the latter (albeit with missing effects)?

However you may feel about them, the Sound Canvas ROM samples were the sound of 90s DOS game music. Swapping them for a "better-sounding" soundfont is like applying one of those gross smoothing filters to cover up low-res pixelation.

I agree, listening to some midis with the newer soundfonts they just dont have the same punch. I remember duke nukem 3d sounding wimpy as fuck in the one configuration.

MIDI may have had a standardized format, but almost nothing was standard about the implementation. I grew up with a Pro Audio Spectrum for some time, which was OPL2. A little later we got an AWE32 card, which had wavetable sound support. DOS and windows games of the era were synonymous with those pieces of hardware for me. The GS wavetable synth just sounds "off" compared to what I grew up listening to.

The point is that because the hardware was so varied, there's no real "right" way to listen to these songs. I think it's kind of neat going back and having them play through large soundfonts and hearing the difference. I'm sure that the composers of the time would have opted for the most realistic sounding instruments if they would have had the ability to use them.

Is this game hard or do i just suck at sonic games?

>do i just suck at sonic games?
On a subconscious level, you don't feel compelled to become good at sonic games, simply because they're not that good.
>>
>>4132035
I like them but sonic cd levels are like a puzzle and i always try to go for the special stages but thats hard because they are enemies everywhere and traps which makes it hard.
>>
>>4132019
You just suck at Sonic games. This game is easy if you know what you're doing. Keep practicing or at least watch a walk-through video.

I'm looking for a relatively cheap handheld emulator console. Would the gpd XD be a good option? It seems to be a solid product but I don't trust these chinese gadgets. I specially fear for the quality of the buttons. Should I buy one or should I just buy a controller for my smartphone?

Just buy a Gameboy
>>
>>4131846
I had one 1.5 year now.

My buttons are all still fine but then again I always take good care of my stuff.

If you're going to get one make sure to install the legacy rom 1.8 firmware on it. It remove all the bloat it came with and make the experience more snappier, the up clock also allow to make use of the more demanding emulators (Saturn, PSP).

The main problem with the system though is that it's kinda old at this point. There have been rumors that GPD is working on the XD 2 but nothing confirmed.
>>
>>4131884

Glad to hear that. I just heard the d-pad and buttons are "spongy" and since retro games can be quite prone to button smashing I wasn't sure if they could work properly after, say, 2 weeks of Contra and Metal Slug for example.

If it's actually this durable I'm totally getting one. Would prefer a gpd win but it's rather pricey for my budget.

Plot:
Uwe Boll, notorious for his shit movies, challenges his critics to a boxing match. One such critic, Little Tax (as he’s called here) has the balls to accept the challenge. Can Little Tax, a man with no previous boxing experience at all, take on Uwe Boll; a man with boxing experience? I’m gonna go out on a limb and say “no”.

They're just reacting to Sephiroth+Jenova though. They never accomplish anything. They're never a major threat. The party treats them like a joke and steal their shit and kill their soldiers like its nothing. They're clearly secondary antagonists at most.

I see there's an English patch for this, but it's meant for the French ROM rather than the Jap one. I'm guessing that means it's 50Hz.
Is there an english patch anywhere for the jap version?
Is it better to just play this in Japanese?
Is the game even good?

The game is pretty good. I used to play this with my mate in 2001 or so, he had the japanese game and an adapter for the SNES. The hype was unparalleled. It's slow for today's standards, but still holds up pretty well.
>>
>>4131193
AFAIK, the game wasn't 50hz optimized so it should run fine on 60hz (barring the region lock of course).
It's pretty fun, even though the random and broken stuff is found fast.

I know it's the words of a heathen, but what's the best console version of Doom? (PC is the best version, the ports on the PS3/Xbox are good too)

The only ones worth taking a look are PSX Doom and Doom 64, due to their unique cool stuff. The others are all just watered down ports of the PC version.
