>avoid all chocobo spin offs because I figure they will be childish/soulless games
>Finally try Chocobo Racing 15 years later
>it's a childish/soulless game
The one good thing I will say is the graphics/ characters are very well done. As is Story Mode.
The problem though is this is a racing game and the racing fucking sucks. If you fuck up majorly once, you might as well restart the race because the boss will be half way across the map by time you recover.
It uses a system very similar to Mario Kart Racing with powerups/attacks and such, but using them is just boring and not fun at all.
The tracks are very basic and also not fun.
The game is cute, but thats it.
Is chocobo's dungeon 1 & 2 any good?
I somehow doubt it.
To clarify, when I say "childish" I just mean it has no real depth and feels like it was made for a young kid to fuck with, not FF fans.

>Is chocobo's dungeon 1 & 2 any good?
They're decent fun if you enjoy roguelikes.

Just looked up some gameplay..
eh.. again looks cute and like a fun little adventure with mog, but somehow It doesn't look fun.
I think I just hate video games now.
Fuck.
Just bought one on ebay with a bunch of games. Share your stories, opinions, memories, recommendations, etc...
I never experienced any discomfort from the VB screens.
I used to lay on the couch with the VB balanced on my face and play hours of Teleroboxer.

>I used to lay on the couch with the VB balanced on my face and play hours of Teleroboxer.
Same, suppossedly it isn't good to use it that way because even a slight move while the screens are spinning might damage them.
Never had any problem though.
OP, which games did you got? whole library is about 20 games. Most of them are worth playing, just avoid Waterworld unless you can get it for dirt cheap because that game is not very good.
There's also a flashcart called Flash Boy which not only lets you play all the VB games but also homebrew stuff like the newly released Snatcher VB port, or unreleased games like High Bound.
>>2383849
>which games did you got?
Vertical Force, Baseball, Teleroboxer, Panic Bomber, Tennis, Mario Clash, Galactic Pinball, Wario Land, Red Alarm
Sanwa VS Happ sticks.
Pros, cons, general discussion.
>>2372616
Sanwa if you want accuracy and stability for fighting games
Seimitsu if you want accuracy and stability for shmups and/or platformers
Happ / IL if you hate accuracy or tight feel and would rather have the stick value durability over all other features.

I have some seimitsu parts (stick and buttons) incoming for my Saturn stick... Maybe I should've have chosen Sanwa buttons instead of Seimitsu though. Fortunately I got them extremely cheap (150 yen per button), so I might replace them in the future, provided they fit in the case.
Cooking up a spooky cake edition.

Why do the explosions in this game look so goofy? In fact, everything in this game looks silly. Was that a design choice?
It's because they're 3D.

New Umihara Kawase thread again because starting the other one with a webm with a black image as a preview was a bad idea.

Let's talk about overlooked, underappreciated, or Japan-only games for this console.
Diver's Dream (JP: Dolphin's Dream) was an underwater exploration game localized and released only in PAL territories. For a game of its kind it has a very "game-y" bent, unlike the more free-roaming Aquanaut's Holiday or Endless Blue. Your mission is to explore sunken ships and wreckage and recover well over 100 unique treasures, as well as scraps that you can trade in for varying amounts of money. With that you can purchase better diving equipment (you start off with a pair of swim trunks) and weapons (to fend off sharks and dangerous fish). These are also customizeable by the player.
The whole process of venturing ever-father into the sunken ships and caves, only to surface with new treasure and buy even better equipment, is really addictive. There is also a Free Mode so you can explore to your heart's content though, and even during salvage missions you get to roam around very wide areas.
Though the game's cutscenes are pretty ugly and swimming animations are stiff and basic, it's still totally worth playing today. On the PS2, the sorely overlooked Everblue 2 would employ a very similar game structure of diving and salvaging, and I believe it was released in all regions.
>tfw NA version of Ace Combat 3 was a butchered mess
God, I wish project nemo was finished already
The Firemen 2: Pete & Danny is a sequel to the SNES hidden gem which basically functioned like a top-down shooter, except you were shooting out pressurized water to put out the most malicious fire ever.
In this Japan-only sequel protagonist Pete returns, now joined by his buddy Danny for two-player co-op action. You go around putting out several mysteriously-started fires all around New York City on Christmas Eve, which for some reason was a very popular time and place among late-nineties video games. There's a lot more visual variety in the game's stages and the core gameplay remains the same.
Compared to the first game, The Firemen 2's sprite work is sort of bland and dull, but still totally serviceable, and it's also kind of needlessly text-heavy, which will especially be a slog if you don't speak Japanese. It's still a totally worthwhile adventure.
Because you guys wanted it. In this thread you can talk about everything related to ROM hacking: project showoffs, hacking help, good ROM recommendations, you name it.

I'm already in world 2 of Super mario 3 Mix.
I fell in love with that romhack. The level design is great (inspired by the three NES mario games, plus some super mario world), and getting all the star coins on each level is a fun challenge.
Also, playing with toad is great.
Go play that shit. You'll fall in love as soon as you see the title screen.
I have a bunch of SMW rom hacks downloaded, and they all seem pretty diverse, but I'm curious if there's one that just feels like a proper sequel to SMW. Good, consistent level design, good difficulty curve that isn't too hard, good length, secrets, etc.
I'm looking for someone to romhack or create how to romhack instructions for this game (see pic) and I'd be willing to pay via commission work.
Hey /vr/ do you know of any demos to games that had different content from the main game itself? I think its a great idea and good incentive to even bother trying the demo since its a unique experience. Half life uplink did this do you guys know of any others?
>half-life uplink
I ended up selling that PS2 demo that contained that content for 20$ to some desperate bastard

HL Uplink was great, you could build maps and stuff and use them with the demo, so it was like a little game in its own right. A lot of enemies and weapons were missing from it though, so you didn't get a lot of variety.
Sadly, I can't think of any games that had totally different content from the real deal, though FF8's demo didn't have you in your SeeD uniforms.
Earthworm Jim is what happens when you have an artist lead a game project and focus more on cool ideas and style than actual gameplay.
Usually that would end up badly
EWJ was damn fun
>>1897369
the music of that game was boring and bad,
whats with those battles against the snot, they were damn hard and stupid also the fucking hell boss
>>1897376
It's not a bad game, and you can certainly do a lot worse in the 16-bit 2D platformers department, but it's overall not very well designed from a gameplay perspective. Almost every level is a completely different style of gameplay, the difficulty is all over the place, and certain things just aren't suited for being a game. Sure, Jim eating Bob the Goldfish instead of actually fighting him is funny, but it's not a satisfying way to conclude a difficult level. The whole game was clearly designed with "what would be a cool or funny situation for Jim to be in" rather than "what would make for a fun level?"
Did anyone else avoid picking the girl characters in video games as a kid? Now I feel like I usually pick them first to make up for all those times I neglected playing as cute girl characters back in the day.
I always picked the girl character

What's wrong with you?
What do you guys think of this site?
I have noticed many errors on the site. Would a wiki to list them and add corrections help? I know the articles are often times written by amateurs, and they seem to fast forward through the games in fast forward.
Has anyone here written for them? Does anyone plan on writing for them?
>>1866078
It's my favorite reviews site ever, and that's saying a lot considering I agree with you on the errors thing. And absolutely DO make an account on the forums, they're very well receptive to criticism.
It's been around for a long time, and has just now gotten a Patreon (continuous crowdfunding platform) so they're now under huge pressure to perform better.

Bump, the previous thread was great.
Are SM64 hacking tools hard to work with?
It's basically the one game I've always wanted to try making levels for, but I've never been sure if I could work with the toolsets or not.
Isn't "fighting game rom hack" kind of redundant?
