DK '94 > any Rare DK game

The original is better played on a Color Game Boy, the brick Game Boy makes sprites too hard to see.
>>
I've only played the first one. It was decent, but the save system was shit.

A whole three titles from that list are retro and only borderline at that.

Did anyone else here play and love Starseige Tribes? These are the only fps games I was ever deep into. Many many wonderful hours though.

So Tribes thread! Thoughts, memories, stories. Whatever. Tribes 2 release day when Shrike physics were super loose was hilarious.

Interesting! I never played aerial assault because it seemed like such a downgrade from 2 but I'm glad to see it had a good following.

It must have always been a very small community then. I never came close to knowing everyone who played PC. Though in Tribes 1 when I played on a lot of Shifter mod servers I had to keep changing my name.

Is there really no difference between how consoles handle ROMs on flashcarts vs. actual cartridges?
25 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Dunno
>>
>>4134360
Depends on what is inside the cart.
Lots of cart-based systems had expansion hardware inside them (NES had the MMC1-5 chips and other mappers, Konami sound chips, etc, SNES has SA-1, SuperFX, DSP, CX4)

If it has no special hardware, then it's just a storage device.

In a cart, there will usually be some SRAM (temporary, battery backed storage) for saves, a Mask rom(s) (silicon chip with read-only data) and some glue logic chips (74 series, or MAD-1) to help the console map locations on cart to the CPU over X bytes (where X is the max the CPU can address directly).

All this data is binary code.
The console sends a signal to the cart "what is at address FFF0-01AC", the cart pushes the 8 bits of data at that address along a parallel 8 bit bus, the CPU stores it, then it requests the next bit of code (FFF0-01AD).

It just does this all very fast.

So, yes, a flash cart is just a newer way to store and let the console retrieve data.

The complex part is when special chips are involved, then you need to either emulate them, or include those chips on the flash cart.

This is the same way that a homebrew or reproduction cartridge works.
On SNES they use a 40 pin TSOP of flash memory with the signal pins routed to match the exact same pins used in a 26 pin DIP mask rom.

A flash cart just has hardware and software that allows that flash chip to be reprogrammed when you swap ROMs.
>>
I guess not? It just writes a rom file into a chip and the console interprets it like any other game.

It does have to emulate/simulate things that are built into some cartridges.

So the /v/s recommended games turned to shit by allowing faggot mods who don't know what /v/ is run it. Rec some games to be added to a new wiki here
Keep it retro.
thevidya.site
Even though the site is based around /v/, I thought it would be good to get some recs from you guys.

Thinking and discovering for yourself will always be better than following lists made by committee.

Don't be a fucking sheep.

Racketboy already did the best rec lists, I don't see the point of another one
>>
>>4134278
It's hardware lists are a little outdated, and I'm hoping to make it a more general guide to everything vidya.

Is there some sort of recommended guide for using MAME? It seems massively complicated, especially when looking at full sets of ROMs, I've no idea which ones I need.

Just use mameui, bro

Another anon here, but I too came to ask a MAME question. I have a retroPi, and my grandpa REALLY wants to play Gravitar.

but it seems to be for MAME 0.184. Does any of the retropi MAME emulators run that?

RetroPi comes with
mame4all-pi
lr-mame2000
lr-mame2003
lr-mame2010
lr-mame2014
lr-mame2016
AdvanceMAME 0.94
AdvanceMAME 1.4
AdvanceMAME 3

Sorry, ive never done anything with Mame before. Any help is appreciated.

Get arcade64 .185: http://www.progettosnaps.net/arcade/packs/ARCADE64_185_26042017.7z

I prefer this version because of all the nifty options it adds over the stock MAMEUI/MAME, but I'm sure some tismo will tell me I'm wrong somehow.

Get the .185 merged set:
https://archive.org/details/MAME_0.185_ROMs_merged

Plop all the ROM zips within to \mamedirectory\roms\, launch arcade64, enjoy.

Never deviate from this version and this romset, MAME is as good as it's ever going to get. All that you'd ever want and more is covered. Don't deal with the heartache and autism of updating. Tab opens the config menu once you've launched a game, all the input bindings are there. This is key because arcade inputs are insanely varied. That's about it, really.

Was Willow reviewed in Nintendo Power? Mobygames says Volume 7 reviewed it. I checked archive.org, and Vol 7 is a preview, 8-9 are guides. No review.

Google Books, says that on page 82 of "Nintendo Power, Volumes 237-239", there appears to be some kind of review. No clue why it'd be in such a late issue.

>>
>>4132927

the "review" is on page 61 of issue 8.
>>
>>4132980

Yeah, I know that. There's no review score since it's just a preview.

Mobygames says Nintendo power in the Sept issue gave it 4/5. Doing the math, it's 3.75. Maybe they rounded up?

http://www.mobygames.com/game/nes/willow-

In any case, it doesn't line up with the later Nintendo Power review, so it's actually a separate one.

Are there still any tournaments for this game? I've played them all and I still feel that this is the best game in the series.

Never heard of any. Not surprising as most older players who still play Tekken really got their starting during Tekken 3 and Tag.
>>
You live in Korea, OP?
>>
Tekken 2 is far often overshadowed by Tekken 3. I feel 2 is criminally underrated. I think 2 has better music and I really miss playing as Devil.

I have a genuine question about the rules.
Are games and fan made stuff like Mega Maker allowed to be discussed here?
36 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>4132698
That's a good question!
>>
Does it run on a console made in 1999 or before? There's your answer.
>>
>>4132698
I'm gonna go with no. The software and the games made with it run on PC and are created after 1999, and I believe the consensus here is that PC games have to have been created before 2000 to count as retro, due to the difficulty of defining "generations" of computers like you can do with consoles.

If you had to choose one of these specific model for portable emulation, which one would it be?

I own both but find myself constantly alternating between them and can't really settle for just one.
The only main draw are their own PSP and 3DS games but those are out of question in this board.

well I just dug up my old psp for emulation and I have to say it has lots of slowdowns during busier scenes in (s)nes games. also, I don't know if it's the size of my hands or I just forgot it being like that back in the day but the dpad isn't that great and my thumbs get really crampy because of the button placement. using the analog stick is no joy at all.
besides all of that I still like it.
psx emulation is really good although the screen resolution was a little annoying at first after being used to hd screens for so long but anyways, they run flawlessly.
if you want to emulate psx games on the go, the psp is a godsend.
