Hey /vr/, I've been looking for Tips & Tricks magazine for October 1998 but all I can find is the cover. Do I have any chance of finding scans of it?
Also gaming magazine thread I guess.
>>2789614
I hated Tips & tricks.
>>2789615
> hating a ZD publication written by the same people as EGM
Did it rape your mother or something? It wasn't something to subscribe to but it was cheaper than buying a strategy guide to a new game and often easier to find too.
>>2789625
I read my gaming magazines from cover to cover.
(This was when I didnt have internet) so it was my only source of info.
I dunno, I would just pick one of these up off the shelf in the store and see it's half codes, half reader artwork, and like 2 gaming articles.
I have $100 in birthday money and I want to buy a new retro system to celebrate this new year. I already own a Dreamcast, SNES, N64, and an Atari2600 but I would like to extend my retro gaming collection but be able to stretch this money as much as possible. I'm torn between the Sega Saturn and the NES but those can get pricey and I am open to suggestions.
Which retro systems to you recommend /vr/?
>>2789351
Considering the money you have and the consoles you already have you should definitely be getting a Genesis next, either a model 1 and a Chinese Everdrive to go with it or an integrated CD system like a CDX or X'Eye
>>2789359
I'm a nintendrone and I agree with this guy 100%.
Get a Mega Drive and find Gunstar Heroes, too, that's the best game on the system and one of the best games ever made. You'll also be able to play Master System games on it with a Master System Converter.
I'd only recommend a Saturn if you could speak Japanese.
Congratulations!
You've just been selected as the first foriegn AD! And because you're a gaijin, they want you to select classic titles for the Kacho to play.
The rules are:
Nothing beyond Playstation era
The title must have been developed and published in a country outside of Japan.
What do you put him up against, /vr/?
Star Tropics would be obvious to me
>mfw watching arino try to find the password
>>2788945
X-COM. Would have to be the PS1 version because AFAIK that's the only version that was translated to Japanese. I'm sure Arino would have fun renaming all the soldiers which would add a lot of entertainment value.
Also the Japanese cover art is awesome.
>"Oooo Gameboy, eh? I can go home early today!"
Previous thread(s) - >>2773698 >>2773424
This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!
>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.
Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

I asked in the previous thread too. Where did you find the pinouts to modify this for RGB? I might be interested in doing the same thing myself.
>>2785646
>>2785690
Google 'CGA pinout'. It's not rocket science.

The Final Fantasy VIII website is still up after all these years.
They forgot to take it down.
So if you want some internet nostalgia then there you go.

back when flash was the future of web design
>>2785628
>back when flash was the future of web design
Well back in 1999 most people either had dial-up or early DSL which was only marginally better, so most websites were are entirely completely basic or offered a basic version as an option.
i'm loving the 32kbps sound samples
Anyone else just loves the aesthetics of those top-down GB games?
Something about the technical limitations of the console and small size of the screen forcing devs to make everything look big and cute, by comparison SNES games had more colors and sprites, but end up feeling less warm and charming. It also affects the gameplay and made games more fast-paced.
>>2785010
So.. just like the NES?
>>2785012
Compare Zelda 1 to LA, there's a huge difference obviously
Maybe a few NES games come close, but they usually have less developped designs
Thread about good Retro Video Games Books
Somebody here bought this?
The Untold History of Japanese Game Developers Volume 2
http://www.amazon.com/Untold-History-Japanese-Game-Developers/dp/1518655319/
It's Worth it?
Somebody has already uploaded the pdf somewhere?
I bought the Konami Shmups book from HG101
http://www.amazon.es/Hardcore-Gaming-101-Presents-Unofficial/dp/1500737178
Is a book which copy/paste multiple articles from HG101 webpage about konami shmups.
If you like HG101 articles, shmups and hate to read from his webpage, is a good book, but is a bit overpriced for what it offers.
>>2784903
Do you think that the castlevania book is worth the price? I wanted to get that als a christmas present for a friend.
I watched the entire first volume dvd, didn't really impress me much. The internet drama with the crazy mgs2 translator feminist was a far more fun read.
Are there any games like Spy Hunter or 007 racing? I mean driving with shooting but mission based without open world, so not Vigilante or say Driver.
Crime Killer, one of my favorites.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsOYaM8g7Qk
Gets pretty hard later on. There's car, bike, and aircraft stages.
>>2783696
Looks cool thank you
The first Stuntman game was pretty great. I don't remember if it had shooting segments but it was all about precise driving.
What classic RPGs will induce a lot of feels? Earthbound's final battle came close, but didn't really get much out of me.
No video games has made me cry to date, but so far I've mostly been a casul who's played FPSes.
>>2783376
What do you mean by "RPG"? To role-play requires an audience and is not possible in a single-player game per Gary Gygax.
>>2783401
faggot
>>2783376
Chrono Trigger's music alone gives me the feels, but I didn't really give a shit about the story. Specifically this theme:
https://youtu.be/mEoN_Xe-B-s?t=3m13s
Why people insist ?
Crpg and Jrpgs , they are two completely different genres.
and I LOVE BOTH , my favorite game is Ultima IV , but Chrono Trigger It is the most fun thing in the world for me.
why CRPGs fans usually hate JRPGs? Why JRPGs fans only play jrpgs/weaboothings and don't give a try the first Fallout or any other beautiful CRPG (like Darklands, Wizadry 8 or Might and Magic II ) ?
why the fucking fuck all fucking people thinks CRPGs and JRPGs are the exact same thing ?
why all people read RPG and the first thing they thinks is Final Fantasy/Dragon Quest , like all RPGs in the world are JRPGs completely ignoring the existence of CRPGs ?
all this is so fucking stupid
As someone who played JRPGs my whole life, I want to expand my horizons a little and try some CRPGs.
What would you recommend? The smoother the transition, the better.
How do you define the genre's exactly?
Is Etrian Odyssey a JRPG or CRPG?
Is Morrowind a CRPG or a WRPG?
>>2782923
I guess for the most seamless transition you could try JRPGs with CRPG elements like SaGa Frontier, it features a free scenario system where you can travel the world talking to people and whatnot from the get-go. I personally didn't like it and found it a bit too free but I encourage you to try it and see how it feels to you.
If that's a little overwhelming for you then try Legend of Mana, that game is far more JRPG friendly and only has a few elements similar to CRPGs. You have complete control over your characters battle abilities, right down to equipment crafting (literally the most in-depth crafting system in a retro game, btw) and you get to pick what quests you take in almost any order, not to the degree of Frontier or most CRPGs but it should be enough to give you a sense of it all.
If you really want to dive right into a CRPG and see if you like it you could try Silver. I'll preface this by saying it's a fairly unique game as-is and it's not aged very well but it has a cool feature of being relatively linear and leveling you up automatically as the story progresses.

CURRENTLY HOSTING UT99 AT 98.15.234.144
Hey /v/, since September 28th 2010, I've been hosting servers for UT99 and UT2004, and now I host Jedi Knight III: Jedi Academy with JK2 maps as well.
My User Name: InspecktahDeck - Steam Group Name: Speck's Unreal /V/idya. You don’t need the steam version to play, but having steam lets you receive announcements when we play. Discussion boards are now on the group page for users to discuss the games, servers, or suggest tweaks/changes, with some other fun stuff. If you have any problems joining, please post them in the thread, or steam group.

This is all you need to get UT99 and UT2004 up-to-date from a fresh install. For UT99, just make sure you have the latest patch and bonus packs 3 and 4. For UT2004, install the Mega Bonus Pack.

What does /vr/ think about the first two GTA games ?
>>2777230
The best, especially multiplayer and builtin-cheats which made the sandbox experience even better.
GTA 1 was my killer app.
>>2777234
>the best
No, fuck off. Just because something is older doesn't make it better. They were good games for their time but the 3d games blew them out of the water in every single way.
Straight platformers that feel were adventurous without being a metroidvania. One that really feels like a journey where you see and expierence.... stuff. An adventure.
I think SMB2 did that rather well. You know, in the first level you climb up a waterfall to reach the peak of the mountain to fight a dragon. Or the second level in which you steal a magic carpet, go into a giant vase, to find a key and get chased by an evil mask. And then there is the level where you jump from whale to whale, which is kinda beautiful.
The game has some really creative and imaginative places. Probably because it wasn't supposed to be Mario. Whatever, it works. Regular Mario feels like ruining through tileset after tileset, which is also pretty fun, but not adventurous.
Rocket Knight Adventures and Little Ralph come to my mind. In those games all the levels are interlinked, lots of cool locations and many bosses to fight. Very fun games.
So basically adventure platformers that came out before SotN.
>>2775628
It's almost sort of metroidvania so it may not be what you're looking for, but Simon's Quest was one of my favorite games as a kid for that very reason.
Ecco the Dolphin isn't exactly a platformer but gives me a lot of those feelings as well.
Metal Warriors also not exactly a platformer, but very open and adventury feeling.
Sayonara Umihara Kawase was released on steam this week so you don't have to buy a vita(or vita tv) to play it now if you didn't already. Umi thread to celebrate.
Recently got an everdrive for SNES. How is the game on that system? Is it a decent place to start?
>>2730785
The original is still great and you can start just about anywhere in the series(there's only 3 distinct games). The major differences between the games would be line elasticity, enemies and levels.
Never needed a vita to begin with, it was released on 3DS originally

>>2727938
I'm currently playing through Gathering Storms campaigns.
The game has so much wrong decisions in terms of design it's actually funny, but still is kind of entertaining. Not better than III, mind you. I think you will just get tired of it eventually, if not, seek further help.
