Hey /vr/, I plan on making a 16-bit styled video game (don't worry, it's not retro, so I won't shill it here), however I'm still not sure what kind of game I want to make, so I'm looking for some inspiration. What is your favorite game(s) of the 16-bit era?
>>2799447
what? you don't have your own favorite games? you need help deciding what you want to make, let alone skill or knowledge to pull that off?
Just quit, you'll never go anywhere acting like that.
Will you pay us a consulting fee?
itt: games that were almost decent, but fatally flawed.
pic related, I tried this out and it's almost fun. with savestates, it is fun. but the fact that you only have 1 hp and everything kills you makes it really frustratingly difficult to play through fairly.
also this. it's almost decent, I liked the towers and boss fights. but the dungeons are mindbendingly ridiculous, you start off too weak, you always get sent back to the beginning, too many cheap ways of getting killed, etc. the basic idea is not bad at all and I always liked the atmosphere, but the execution is what ruins it.
I forgot to mention that silver surfer has amazing music.
>>2799337
true, but the walls killing you made it that much worse.
I realize the convention, but silver surfer is ridiculous as is. with HP and/or harmless walls it would be pretty good.
hey /vr/, just beat ninja gaiden on the nes and have to say it was one of my favorite nes games! just wanted to know what you guys think about this trilogy on the nes.
NG1 is my favorite game of all time. It never gets old. Wasn't so into 2 or 3 but they're still good.
Enjoyed all the NES games. NG3US nearly drove me insane, but I cleared it.

I want to try the famicom version but I don't feel like buying a system for 1 game
Does anyone know a good audio video switcher that doesn't have lag and lower the quality? I noticed mine lowers the quality and causes faint lines to scroll up the screen. Pic related. That's the one I use
>>2798918
I'm using a cheap RCA 4 port switcher. Has S-video/Composite for all four ports, haven't noticed any lag and the quality is the same as plugging the cables directly in.
Don't know if it has a part number, and it's kinda tied into a lot of cables, all I see is Audio/Video/S-Video Selector on the front with the RCA logo.
>>2798992
This one?
>>2798918
>have lag
how in the world would a an AV switcher add lag? I swear you lagphobics are superstitious.
Just played through this again for the first time in 15 years. Never played any of the other ones before.
The replayability is awesome. Story is awesome.
Thoughts?
meh

Thanks for your verbosity
If you're not restricted to retro games, you should play 2&3 as they're excellent as well.

Name a videogame released in or before 2000 with better realtime human facial animation than Turok 3.
this facial animation looks better than fallout 4 desu
>>2798917
Pong has better facial animation than Fallout 4 dtebshu
Why does Murasamejou get the occasional nod, but this shining example of classic gaming doesn't get any recognition? Surely Mike Jones, with two games to his name, commands more respect than Takamaru or the various other one-hit wonders that Nintendo trots out every once in a while.
literally whiteboy: the game
Probably because most Nintendo games are made in Japan, and StarTropics was only released for the NA audience.

I'm gonna be going on vacation to Japan (Tokyo and Osaka) in January.
What are some good arcades, game bars, and stores to check out?
>>2798545
Super Potato.
>Game Bars
Where do you think you're going? Portland?
In Osaka, I'd recommend Space Station as a video game bar to check out, as it's owned by an American and is very foreigner friendly. Get there at opening though (8pm) as it fills up quick as it's very small. Also, there is a mandarake near by which has a decent selection of games.
Also in Osaka, do to Den Den Town and particularly the Super Potato there. It's loads better than the Akihabara Super Potato, which is utter shit.
If you have to visit Akiba, stop by BEEP Shop for some really lesser-known Japanese PC-related stuff.
What do you guys think of Harvester?
>>2798520
Why you wanna know, homeslice?
Were you one of the developers?
I like it, until you go into the Lodge. That was the worst part for me.
I especially like all those easter eggs and the replayability of the game
>>2798535
I wish I could be insane enough to make this.
I bought it a while ago and found it intriguing, just wondering what everyone else thinks.
I just finished Beneath a Steel Sky and frankly I don't understand why adventure gaming enthusiasts seem to like it so much. The comic panel intro seemed quite innovative and I was expecting something completely different, but the story was a mess, characters bland and backgrounds all drawn in such exciting colours as brown and grey.
It wasn't all bad, but it was just so mediocre that I felt a little betrayed because of the great expectations. I was always wondering whether the start was just slow and the game would get interesting at some point but it didn't.
It was cool to see though some rather crude ideas that were better executed in Broken Sword or that are rather rare or actually non-existent in other games (Virtual reality puzzles).
When have great expectations betrayed you, /vr/?
>>2798367
BASS got overhyped when GoG starting giving it away for free. Because it has a cool cyberpunkish setting, people starting yammering about it like it's some lost gem of the genre, when it's a sometimes cool, sometimes funny, seriously flawed game as you said. It's got quite a bit of the things everyone loves to hate on adventure games for, like pixel-hunting for important objects.
I don't think it's a terrible game but it really doesn't deserve to stand up there with the classics.
>When have great expectations betrayed you
I didn't love System Shock 2. Great atmosphere but kinda boring to play, I thought. I enjoyed going through it once but have no desire to touch it again. Didn't feel betrayed, just that it was overhyped.
>>2798367
I thought Sam & Max was well below other LucasArts adventures like Monkey Island and Full Throttle. Yeah, the humor was there, and I liked the characters, but the puzzles were mostly stupid and the plot was lame. The interface is a pain in the ass too--no mouseover text, and giant mouse icons so it's hard to tell which object you're hovering over.
>>2798602
>I don't think it's a terrible game but it really doesn't deserve to stand up there with the classics.
Sad to hear that, I wanted to play a good, old cyberpunk adventure game. Is Blade Runner worth it?
>never find a second-hand 64 controller that works
>why live?
>>2798358
Where are you buying them from?
If it's Egay and you always go for the cheapest one, what else do you expect????????????!
Go to more flea markets and garage sales. You can also fix them yourself
In the Early 2000s, when the N64 was on the cusp of officially dying, I foresaw this problem and bought up quite a few controllers. Thanks to that I still have 4 like-new controllers with nice, taut joysticks.
Is there any way to make classic PC games look a bit better? Everything is blurred to hell, which I get is due to upscaling it from 480p, but I'm wondering if I can make the image sharper somehow. Any tool/program/wrapper for this?
>>2798168
Afraid not. You'll just have to play it windowed or on a smaller screen.
Search the internet for the name of the game with extras like "high resolution" or widescreen. In various cases that should help.
Looking for the most satisfying platformer.
I want a game that you just turn on and you're instantly jumping around and everything feels snappy and responsive.
Usually I load up a save state in Megaman X where I've already collected the dash upgrade (and then exited the level) so I can just get right into it but I'm looking for something other than Megaman X.
Any recommendations?
>>2798095
I only know the obvious answers, OP.
Super Metroid, Symphony of the Night, Cave Story, the original Mega Man series.
If you don't mind a bit of ero, try Nightmare Sphere. By the end of it, you'll have so many upgrades, you can triple jump, fly, float, dash, shoot in multiple directions, etc.
>>2798101
pretty neat, must've overlooked this one because it sounds like soul blazer. hopefully there'll be some upgrades
>>2798108
I like super metroid but not sure I agree it's one of those games I play for instant platforming goodness. Though the others are obvious and good as well
I'll look into nightmare sphere, thanks
What are some retro games with good romances/or couples that worked well.
sin and punishment
you even get to play as the couple's son on the sequel which makes it more powerful if you've played the first game
any Gundam game is full of successful, healthy relationships
What Tvs do we all use?
>Pic Related: I ordered it as an early christmas present
>Sony Kx-14CP1
LaCie CRT. Very bright, pure colors and high refresh rate.
I love Bush
Tvs
>>2798053
32in sanyo, great TV for all over use.
Also have a decent Philips LCD monitor that was part of a portable DVD that has excellent color and response time despite not having the most clear picture
