Is there a clear cut definition as to what's a J-RPG and what's not? I understand most J-RPG's have similar game play (Final Fantasy, Mother series, and Dragon Quest) but whenever I cal games like LoZ and Pokemon J-RPG's people always have a problem. They're Japanese, and you play a role.

The important part isn't playing a roll but rolling a play.

In the context of video games, RPG has mostly meant that the game has stat-based combat and character power-growth systems modeled after table-top RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons.

Some people don't like the term "RPG" meaning that and want it to mean the same thing it means for actual table-top games, where it refers to actual role-playing/impromptu acting.
Of course, that's impossible with current computer technology, so they wind up arguing about which games have enough choose-your-own-adventure menu branches to count as role-playing in their eyes.
>>
Usually I call them Japanese adventure wargames. Horii made his own adventures for Japanese PCs before making Dragon Quest with Nakamura and the rest. He generally said, in an interview alongside J.B. Harold/Hotel Dusk writer Rika Suzuki (http://shmuplations.com/adventuregames/), that he thought mainly of how to make a better kind of PC adventure but for console players when developing DQ. The game feels like Portopia in enough ways, and then DQ provided the base for many genre titles after it (though guys like Kawazu got inspiration directly from tabletop games both imported and domestic, so a game like SaGa feels unorthodox for reasons).

Is that REALLY just a Doom reskin? Because I remember there being damaging floors in Doom, but no damaging floors in Chex Quest.
>>

They were basically Doom WADs made to advertise cereal.

It ended up being combined together and finished later though.
>>
This game was fucking awesome. I got it at an age when my hippie mom still wouldn't let me play violent video games, but "zapping" "flugelmonsters" or whatever the fuck was totally fine.

I didn't realize it was a Doom reskin until much later, which explains why it played so well.

As an adult I notice the game's shortness and relative lack of secrets but as a kid playing in 20 and 30 minute bursts it never bothered me.

10/10 would zap those slime bastards again

MGS PC is missing some effects. But it has fixed all the awful PS1 3D issues that most games have. I say the PC version is worth it.

Shame it doesn't work on modern systems.

HD PS1 graphics, that shit never gets old.
If you want a fancy remake with bad cutscenes just play Twin Snakes.
>>
>>2800239

The only issue with PS1 in HD are the wobbling and parkinsons. I can accept the rest. It's just an old game.

>Twin Snakes

Is a cheap, half-assed remake by incompetent devs. The environments are just so soulless. I'd much rather play the original.

What are some retro games that use flavor text?

I know Vagrant Story has flavor text for item descriptions and Parasite Eve has flavor text for examining the environment multiple times.

King's Quest has flavor narration, particularly 5 and 6. The fan remakes of 1-3 actually expanded on it, and I loved it. I enjoy it a lot. Does it count?

For those consoles I don't have I must emulate.
My video card has a composite port.
When I plugged it into my CRT and turned on the computer it showed the POST and boot sequence and then the display turned black when it got to the login screen. The computer monitor still showed the desktop.

I looked on google but they only have tutorials for modern flat TVs.
I tried a bunch of options in the control panel such as resolution and monitor select but I can't get it work.

Check your driver if you can set up the TV as a secondary or primary monitor with the correct format.
>>
simple question with very complicated answer.

ideally you want to output 15khz 240p using soft15khz or arcadeVGA . You then need an RGB capable monitor or RGB-YUV transcoder.

this is assuming your looking for best quality.

Hey, /vr/.

Legend of Mana is one of my favorite games ever, despite of its flawed story and overall development.

So, the question is:
Does difficulty matter?

well dude you're asking /vr/, this boards only call in life is bragging about their 1cc in some obscure japanese arcade board no one heard about. of course they will shit on your thread
>>
>>2799503
The game's still piss easy even at the highest difficulty setting, mostly because as per the tradition of the series the combat system is a goddamn clunky mess and whoever designed it and thought it was good should seriously reconsider his whole life.

Everything else is top tier though, immortal graphics that could only be rivalled by SaGa Frontier 2, great score, good writing, it is even non linear.

It's not so much that it's just really easy. The programming is messed so that even on Nightmare mode where everything is level 99 and extra buffed, it doesn't apply to bosses.

The combat does kind of suck because you're stuck to just facing left and right, but it doesn't ruin the game and pic related is a good example that a game doesn't have to be hard to be fun.
