ITT we post interesting trivia
did you know the western smb2 was actually a reskin of a taiwanese game called donkey kong picnic
did you know the psx was actually an obscure japanese model of the ps2 so you're all using the name wrong

I've heard that NTSC-J has different black levels than NTSC-UC. Is this true?
Maybe it is only for composite video and S video or higher is the same.
I know that NTSC has color differences from PAL but I think that's only for composite.

>I've heard that NTSC-J has different black levels than NTSC-UC
No because NTSC is the exact same everywhere, what you're referring to are region codes for PlayStation games.
>but I think that's only for composite
And S-Video, because it's still being color encoded into NTSC/PAL.
RGB is not NTSC/PAL, so it always looks the same depending on your set and it's also the clearest option.
there is only one ntsc colour standard. if you are worried that you are missing something, get an oled or led with rec. 2020 colour space which covers the ntsc colour space correctly by 99,98%.
They did calibrate for 0 IRE vs our 7.5. Probably why games started including color bars in the 32 bit era.
I want to emulate older consoles and handhelds on a device that's similar to the Wii-U's gamepad. Have any of you had a good experience with things like pic related? I have some misgivings about the build quality and how well the buttons will interface with the software.
I'm aware that the PSP could probably scratch this itch, but I was hoping for some alternative.
You could make your own. I haven't made a compact, or hand-held styled emulator, but it is possible.

Also OP, look into one of those Nvidia sheild things, its like a 360 controller that your phone snaps into from what I've heard.

Jesus Christ, anon, get your eyes checked.
I'll start.

But in the end, what gives it such a retro feel?
>>2821726
I love link to the past as anyone else, but how fun is zelda 2 compared to it? I never played it myself and the different gameplay looks interesting, even if many consider it as inferior and too different from the other games

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!
>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.
Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

i couldn't believe how clean the saturns RGB is.
really puts the snes to shame, looks like i should find me a 1chip/mini...
Those are really cool and not that common in 2D games, so I want to see those that actually exist. Preferably in platformers and with sprites, but other sidescrollers and 2.5 also works.

It was so much darker and mysterious, I had so many friends that I lost contact with because of how the web was setup, people would vanish without a trace. Growing up with no friends my only source of friendship was on the computer, I could easily find people relatable and similar to me, now that the web is full of phone posting scum it's impossible for me to find any sense of friendship. Computer science turned to shit, forums died along with every tiny community, and corporate ran matchmaking servers have taken over every game I once played.
Believe it or not, it's going to get even worse in the coming years, :(
I don't.
I lost most of my childhood vidya friends to fucking Counter-Strike. We used to play lots of vidya together, of varying genres, and suddenly the faggots would ONLY play counter-strike. I tried playing with them for a little while but playing the same shit over and over just wasn't fun. Some of them played 12 hours straight or more. And they wouldn't play anything else.

I've seen you post your story before. My reply to you is the same now as it was then: you have objectively shitty friends.
So, me and some nigger were talking about retro video games. A flashback hits me and I remember this kickass game. Anyone ever played it? Looking back now it's seems a little obscure since it seems no one has heard of it.
>>2824213
Nope, no one else played that game. No one at all. It was just you.

Hey /vr/
I'm thinking of getting either a NES or Famicom and rebuilding my collection of games after all these years.
Long story short, I want to be able to play both on one console, so I was going to get a famicom AV (the toploader) and then just use an adapter for NES games. As far as I can tell, this way I get the AV output and can play pretty much most games. Any thoughts/recommendations?
>>2823142
Don't rule out getting an original Famicom and AV mod it, it's not all that hard (very easy unless you need to remove jailbars when it gets slightly trickier, but not too much)
Also there's quite a few games on Famicom Disk System when it comes to the japanese library. For example: Zelda and Zelda 2. So you should consider getting either an FDS, or just the Twin Famicom which has that built in.
The Twin Famicom also has the added benefit of having the cleanest AV output.
>>2823142
I wouldn't even bother at this point. NES is perfectly emulated and you can download the entire ROM set in a matter if minutes.
>>2823159
Thats a very interesting point about the FDS. I didn't even know about the twin fami either, thanks!
>>2823164
I want to collect the games, I'm already well aware I can emulate.

Awesome game. Gaining a lot of popularity lately. Glad I never sold mine. I prefer the Genesis version a little bit, but both are awesome and pretty good games that have similar versions a cross both consoles.
>>2822726
Yeah same here I only have the Super Nintendo version original box it came in. One of my favorite games, I like the whole horror movie theme so badass
>>2822726
I'm interested, what makes you prefer the genesis version when it was so lazily done?
So, let me guess. The Moon Remix thread got deleted because people started bickering overUndertale. Come the fuck on, guys. Can anybody at least tell me if there's any place were updates of the fan translation are being posted? Last thread (well, 2 threads ago I guess) someone said that NeoGaf discussion about it wasn't being updated because the thread was locked, is that true? I used to lurk there and now I don't know were to check for updates. Do the translators have a blog or something? I really want to play that game.
Yeah I figure it was deleted over the same thing. I'm fine with avoiding comparison to said title if everyone else is.
I also haven't played the game, I don't know much about it. I'd like to, though. Can it be played relatively well with simple Japanese knowledge?
God forbid anything come up in a discussion about retro games other than retro games. It was actually a somewhat interesting discussion about morality in video games. Try having that discussion in /v/ without it devolving into people calling each other faggots and Jews.
>>2822579
Fuck off. /vr/ is not "/v/ but for actually talking about video games"
