What do we define as retro?
As video game consoles ramp up to 4-5 year lifespans as opposed to the old/expected 7-8 years, why are Xbox, PlayStation 2 and GameCube not considered retro consoles?
Granted, PlayStation 2 lasted until what, 2013? So I can kind of understand discontinuation dates, but, what's the actual reason we can't talk about systems from 2000 and 2001-2002?
You can totally talk about this but I don't it's gonna change anything any time soon.
>What do we define as retro?
This board is for the discussion of classic, or "retro" games. Retro gaming means consoles, computer games, arcade games (including pinball) and any other forms of video games on platforms launched in 1999 and earlier. With the release of the 8th generation of consoles, the Sega Dreamcast will now be considered "retro", though the remainder of the sixth generation (Xbox, PS2, GameCube) will not.

To be more specific,
Why?
Why don't we define the other three as retro? You can't talk about that shit on /v/
Previous thread - >>2842270
This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!
>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.
Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

You got it.
What's a good Western RPG that only has minimal mouse usage (using a trackpad) that I can play on a T61?
What have you already played?
If you're a beginner I'd suggest Might and Magic 3 or 4+5.
>>2869123
I'm open for anything but Daggerfall (forgot my save at home D: )
And the first 2 M&M's (too light on the story content)
Also how playable is Ultima Online with a trackpad?
People always talk about their 90's childhood experiences, though you don't ever really hear of 90's parent experiences, I was a 90's parent, I was 38 in 1996, I had a 6 year old son and a 12 year old son, I tell ya watching them wrestle eachother to figure out how to ace a Donkey Kong level, Back then it was so simple, you'd buy a game and go home and play it, now you buy a game and its glitchy as fuck and you have to wait for day one patches (Batman Arkham Knight)
Nothing was more magical then watching your kid work his way through the wrapping paper of a SNES console you wrapped..
My sons now 25 and one of those annoying
"the 90's were better" people.. Pretty sure he uses 4chan to...
The 80s and 90s were better. You just explained why.
So you failed as a parent?
Hey dad, stop using my secret chinese cartoon board! Back to Facebook!
So I just watched "Get Lamp" and now I want to try a text adventure, where do I start? I played Zork on a whim once and enjoyed it till I got stuck in what I think was hell, should I just go back and give Zork a second try or is there a better starting point?
Zork is great but medium hard. I enjoyed the Monty Python and the Holy Grail one it's easy.

I recommend this (which is on-topic, Z-machine platform dates back to 1979, and this specific z8 version is from 1995):

In general any Annual IF Competition winner is worth playing, see:

I like the TADS era of games, maybe check out "The Legend Lives!"
Hi guy's I recently softmodded my original xbox and am having a bit of trouble any help would be greatly appreciated!
I'm using ZsnexBox 3.7 but it won't let me change screen resolution, any idea why?
Also emulation thread?
>>2871996
But...why?
>>2872006
Seriously? aside from spending ridiculous amounts of money on cartridges i never got to play in my youth? because sticking them all on one console is convenient for me.
This might be because of the video cables you're using. You're likely on composite and yeah, you won't be able to do much with that shit. Go YUV.
>this red nightmare is worth $200 or more
Why?
>>2870409
'cause you faggots keep checking how much they're worth, thus creating a demand for shit.
Pic related.
Also some other actually good games like Teleroboxer and Jack Bros.
Probably not worth $200 though, VBs used to be much cheaper years ago (like $10 cheap). Now they're collector items.
Emulating also doesn't give the same experience, although I've heard emulating with an oculus or one of these VR devices is pretty close or identical.
The controller is pretty boss, too.

>Missing a lot of levels.
Well that sucks, that game was my Epic Mickey
I've recently been jamming the Jojo arcade fighter and that's pretty good, but it made me think about what I might be missing.
they all suck ass, honestly

I've heard a lot about "undertale=shitty earthbound clone"
I never played undertale , care to explain why? From the looks of some screenshots , it looks more like cave story
>>2866992
Just play the game. It's easy to pirate, too.
It's has obvious inspiration from earthbound and the creator even made an earthbound romhack years ago, but it's not an earthbound clone and anyone who says so is a retard.
Also not retro, but I can't blame you because how shitty /v/ is.
>>2866996
Not from /v/ I'm from a famous containment board... but I played and still play a lot of retro games (if you count snes, nes and ps1 as retro) I liked mother 1 over 2
>>2866996
/v/ is cringy as fuck, with the ff7 remake, this board will get flooded with newfags sorry /vr/
Anyone else tried this, or know if it's even worth? I've memorized hiragana k-n but for some reason it's taking me more than a week to remember the other half? Any tips or methods?
why the fuck do you need text for a soccer and a fighting game?
>>2866253
Just picked em off of google bud
>buy imports
>buy eprom programmer
>swap chips, shells, labels
>sell as repros
>find hipsters
profit
This is the best RPG of all time. Prove me wrong.
Can't be very good if I've never heard of it before.

I'm not sure about this
Have you ever played this game?
I remember playing it with a kid. I didn't know wtf I was doing and I would just button mash until I got the character to the exit. Needless to say I didn't get very far.
Now that I am an adult I really like puzzle games like this, where you have to move objects and whatnot to find an exit.
I'm thinking about playing it again since I have all my old Game Boy games.
Any fans of Kwirk here or similar puzzle games?
I remember him from the Power Team cartoon.
Kwirk is an underrated game for sure. It has a catchy soundtrack and the puzzles generally have the right amount of challenge... until the last stages on Level 3 which are brutal. I don't think I got to around 3-5 before I just couldn't solve them anymore.
I'd be interested in trying the 2 player mode, but goddamn what are the chances I'll ever meet someone else with a game boy, link cable, and fucking Kwirk?
>>2873439
Came here to post this. He was literally the only character I didn't recognize from a game.
And thanks to OP, I'm going to give it a shot.
How to git gud at Panel de Pon?
>>2872054
Play vs. a shit ton. No other way to get the 'eye'. Keeping playing until you can cream the computer even on Super Hard. The SNES in hindsight has really bad AI, but it doesn't seem like that until you're good enough.
>>2872054
My girlfriend kicks my ass at Tetris, but I'm far superior at this game. I guess we're even.
>>2872094
You and your GF should play The New Tetris, the only Tetris variation worth a damn (I don't count TA as a Tetris game because they don't share anything in common besides being puzzel games). It may help level the playing field. The added mechanic is trying to create perfect squares with 4 tetraminos, bonus points if they are all the same piece.
Good deals thread
I love people who don't realize that many, many, MANY things are worth substantially less today than they were when they were new. I remember just the other night reading an ad where some guy was talking about how much he paid for some of his laserdisc stuff like it is in any way relevant.
>>2866946
some of them are worth money tho
I paid $50 each for 2 rare laserdiscs
>>2866961
How much did those cost when they were new?
