I'm trying to replay FFVII. My disk is scratched so that Bugenhagen's speech bugs out in the middle and freezes the game. I tried something /vr/ suggested, which was windex and a towel, but that didn't work. Is there anything else I can try?

Get a disc resurfacer/polisher.
>>
I don't know why you bothered to repost this thread. You are only going to get the same replies you got last time.
>>

Disregard this. Once data has been destroyed by physical damage to the disc, you can't put that data back. It's just not possible. How does your resurfacing device know what that data was to begin with? The only thing you're doing is reducing the appearance of scratches by shaving off a thin layer of the disc. If any data on the disc has been corrupted, it's gone forever. No amount of resurfacing is going to bring it back.

You're also screwing over the next person who ends up with your game discs, because they have no idea what sort of damage you've put them through. This is why I'm so adverse to buying games from eBay anymore. Resellers end up with scratched discs that don't work anymore, run them through resurfacing devices and claim they're in like-new condition.

Count your losses and toss the disc.

i'm thinking about saying fuck it and actually trying a traditional jrpg for the first time, but i have no idea where to start. my only experience with anything resembling a jrpg is super mario rpg, and i haven't played the paper mario series or mario & luigi either, so it's incredibly limited.

i'd rather start with a retro game, preferably 16 bit. but where the fuck do i start? dragon quest series? final fantasy series? earthbound? or should i just say fuck it and play the simple mario rpg games?

for some reason i've been leaning towards the dragon quest series, but the question is where to start? what's the definitive version of each release? i could ask the same thing about final fantasy, really, which fucking release is worth the time?

What makes you want to try the genre? That will at least give an indication of what type to recommend.

Also what other games do you like?
>>
>>2882435
Final Fantasy VI (released as FFIII in the US on the SNES) if you want to stay 16-bit or earlier.

Final Fantasy IX if you're willing to include 5th gen. FFIX was my first JRPG and I absolutely adored it. It kind of spoiled me though, because almost nothing since then has come close to it.
>>
>>2882443
no reason to try the genre other than the fact that i have never really given it a fair shot. like i said, the only jrpg game i've played to completion was super mario rpg. although now that i think about it, i did play pokemon red and gold as well.

also the games i usually play seem fairly irrelevant but my preferred genres are fps, platformers and survival horror. i don't even play many wrpgs unless they're a blend of genres like deus ex or system shock

>>2882451
i'm willing to include the 5th gen. i guess the reason i said i would prefer 16 bit is because i feel as if the games from that gen aged a bit better and i wasn't a big fan of 3d gaming until sixth gen

Recently bought an adapter that allows my pc to hook up to my crt tv, but when I plug everything in it just comes up with a green screen. I just wanna emulate some of the older games that I missed. Is the tv incompatible or am I just doing it wrong?

Sounds like your computer trying to detect the monitor's specs and getting confused that it's a converter box. Did you set your resolution as low as it would go at a 4:3 aspect ratio before you plugged it in to the converter?

There may also be some dip switches you have to play with to get the converter to output properly.
>>
>>2881707
Yeah I messed around with all the switches, changed the resolution and was following a guide online, can't remember the guide I used now though. But if it isn't obvious I'm not too familiar with the technicals of Crt and building arcade machines. Regardless I should've mentioned I'm using a Sanyo. Not sure if that changes anything but hopefully it can narrow things down.
>>
>>2881681
I bought a device that looks exactly like that, but it's black.
It does analog > VGA, but not the other way around.
The VGA input is only for post processing, like forcing an aspect ratio, back to VGA.
It doesn't work with 240p systems either.

Maybe yours is different, but read the instructions or store page and make sure that it outputs analog.

I only played 1 and 2 myself, but I loved them. My favorite music is probably Toasty from 1, and Autumn Plains for 2. For World, Dream Weaver's in 1, Autumn Plains for 2. Fav level in 1 is Treetops, 2 is Skelos Badlands

I played all three and I like the first one best. The second was good but didn't feel as magical. The third brought back the magic but had too many characters for my tastes.
>>
>tfw I only played the first game.

With that said I think it is the greatest 3D platformer of it's era. This means it is better than:

>Banjo
>SM64
>Crash

As well as the other platformers during this time.

>What is your favorite level in each game?
Cliff town, just got a strange nostalgia for it that can't be explained.

>What is your favorite world?
Magic Crafters for sure.

>Favorite music in each game
Magic Crafters again
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VV4y4uP6luA

I got to play the other two games one of these days.
>>
I think they're all great desu. I ended up playing them in reverse order over the years and loved all three. My only criticism would be that the camera in the first game isn't quite as maneuvreable as the other games which slows things down a bit.

Kid nikki/Kaiketsu Yanchamaru 1 and 2 are alright but maybe don't stand out among the many other action/platformers on the system, however the 3rd game is actually amazing, was never released outside of Japan though, it was a late Famicom game from 1993.

Who would have known that a common Lion King cartridge would end up being one of the most useful ways of determining what chips your SNES has without having to open it...

>In Options, press B, A, R, R, Y (for programmer Barry Green) to to access the debug menu. This menu deserves special mention for being one of the very few that will easily tell you the CPU, PPU1 and PPU2 versions of your SNES console, which is useful info for testing hardware and software compatibility.

And just in case... When typing the R in "B-A-R-R-Y" use the R shoulder button and not RIGHT on the D-pad.

>useful info for testing hardware and software compatibility

Bullshit. The person who wrote that clearly doesn't know shit about the SNES.

The differences between revisions hardly affect games at all. There is a DMA crashing bug on some of the earliest Japanese systems, that's it.

The 1chip and SNES mini systems apparently don't put as much emphasis on mid scanline changes, but even those things and any other difference you could name will have fuck all to do with compatibility.
>>
Awesome, I actually still own my old cart of TLK, I'll try this tonight when I get home.

My SNES is one of the earliest models so I don't think I'll find any surprise, but I want to see the debug menu anyway.

It's not bad, it's just bland. It's a bit too easy (hence Expert mode, too bad that isn't being translated as far as I know) and while alchemy is introduced as a huge gameplay element it's seldom useful and more hassle than it's worth. It's kinda obvious Falcom wasn't all that familiar with SFC programming because the game feels unpolished in that regard - a bit too sluggish, a bit too laggy in places where it really shouldn't feel like this at all.

The story is unremarkable and all over the place. I mean, Ys III was a huge mess because its plot was hastily put together as an excuse for a side scroller, but it's obvious they were going for an elaborate plot with V and it just goes nowhere. The design documents outline a story that's FAR more coherent and satisfying than whatever the hell V actually was.

Even music, the one thing Ys has always been outstanding at, feels a bit too bland. The entire audiovisual department is bland as hell considering it takes place in Northern Africa and the story calls for tons of cool influences and motifs. Both the sound and visuals are just mortifyingly generic. They did have a vision for it but failed to execute it, pic related is a good example of what I mean: the map makes Kefin look like a hanging gardens of Babylon sort of place, which would look (and sound) amazing, but the music is generic orchestra and the entire place looks like a completely unremarkable European city.

So yeah, it's not BAD, it's just very mediocre. It's the one game I hope they remake, with proper implementation of the alchemy idea AND the actual story they were planning it'd be an awesome game. As it stands it's just an okay effort. It's just disappointing, not bad.
>>
>>2881253
I think I've mentioned this in about 10 different Ys threads at this point, but I'll say it again: It starts out shit, but it gets much better once you buy/find different swords. The starting sword just has an awkward swing.
Also prepare to be disappointed by the magic system. The first spell you get from Massea is actually more useful than most of of the ones you can craft.

>>2881265
I didn't think the story was all over the place. It's basically a simple time travel plot. Just pay attention and it's easy to understand
>>
>>2881316
Time travel? The only time travel plot is the Stoker/Foresta side story, and it's completely disconnected from the main Kefin story to the extent that its resolution has to be tacked on right before the final boss. While you're destroying Kefin a mcguffin literally sends you into the past to resolve this side plot, then you come back and keep destroying Kefin. It has no relevance to anything else, if anything it just breaks the flow of the main story even more by making the final events seem less coherent. I mean, even less than what they actually are.

Also every other sword has awkward swing arcs or styles. It was a cool feature having different swords control differently, but some styles are poorly implemented. The last sword is especially aggravating, since it makes you do a rather slow estoc-type of thrust. Fighting the final boss, who requires jumping all over the place, with such a sluggish attack, is a bit too annoying.

Eternal Punishment is much more grindy then it should be, and the psx battle system is pretty slow. Still, the all-adult party cast is pretty nice.

Innocent Sin has Hitler, and that's great.

Since they're so connected I can't put one above the other storywise.

Maya is my waifu, so I guess I like that she has a personality in IS. Good ol' hearttits.

So all in all, IS>EP, although they're both good and enjoyed best as a whole story rather than as parts.

Forgot to mention it was DK64.

In high school (1999-2003) I was loaned Goldeneye 64 and a couple of junk titles and we lost touch. Last year I found the guy on Facebook who, coincidentally, lived in the same city as I did (we grew up in a small town), I asked if he wanted them back, he enthusiastically responded, and I got to go hang out with his wife and child and we played goldeneye 64 all those years later!

Who here has played the video game version of The World is Not Enough? I've never seen any discussion on here about it. It's rarely brought up anywhere, for that matter.

It's obviously not anywhere near as good as Goldeneye for a number of reasons, but I'm still curious to see what others thought of it.

Personally, I think it's fun and expanded on a bunch of things Goldeneye did. It's not nearly as smooth as Goldeneye and the multiplayer maps are some of the worst I've ever played, but it's pretty decent.
