Outside of both being incredibly influential, which has better gameplay: Quake, or Doom?
http://www.strawpoll.me/6223345
Quake, but barely.

>>2844260
Gameplay is kind of a broad word, but Doom is thrilling while Quake seems very bland to me.
Manlet edition.
Tibia is a top down MMORPG with all the usual trappings that has been running since 1997. The hermits of /tbg/ hibernate in two servers: the European located world of Secura where we have the guild Yotsubas and the North America located world of Fidera where we have the guild Sengoku. Choose the server you have the best connection to and post your name & world in here for a guild invite.

Slightly off-topic, but what's the offline game closest to Tibia that isn't Ultima VII?

ITT: We post games that may have been popular, but never had much of a legacy. This definitely comes to mind. To this day, I still think this game is better known for all the clones it spawned rather than any significant sequels it may have had.
>>2886186
Only in US. Japan went nuts for Xevious.
It is one of Namco's best games.
>>2886186
Never liked Xevious. It lacks the challenge of other shmups, it lacks the graphics and sound of future shmups, and it doesn't have the charm of early single screen shmups.
Innovative as it may have been, as a game itself I never really liked it. If it didn't have the Nazca lines or the mother ship every once in a while it would be entirely forgettable.
>>2886197
Prior to xevious, you basically had space invaders. It was a big step forward. It was also doing the starfox aesthetic which gets built upon in the follow in games.
What does /vr/ consider objectively some of the very worst retro games?
This has been covered by every two-bit hack on Youtube countless times but most of the time they just suck at the game or take the ideas that were innovative at the time out of context or focus too much on shitty cashgrab licensed games (*cough* *cough* AVGN).
>pic only sort of related.. the whole "ET caused the American Video Games Crash" is a fucking meme, it's not even THAT bad by Atari VCS standards...
>>2886068
Tom and Jerry: Frantic Antics on genesis and Plucky's Big Adventure on PS1 are some of my non-obvious choices for worst games.
>>2886068
IMO E.T. is a pretty solid game, the only bad thing about it is the falling down hole glitch.
Superman 64 though, is a literal pile of shit.
But i'm just taking potshots at easy targets.
Friday The 13th is pretty bad
>>2886068
Dash Galaxy. Fuck that game.
Have any of you pushed past the first level of this clusterfuck of a game? I just cant do it. It is so slow and monotonous. In fact, at one point I got stuck between two platforms with literally no way to get out.
But hey, the music is great.
>>2885850
It's not that bad. The controls take some getting used to. It's actually pretty easy to beat.
>>2885862
It's such as slow paced game though. Does it pick up?
Speed Slider is by far the best zone. Botanic Base, Marina Madness and Techno Tower are ok but very similar to each other, and Amazing Arena is boring.
>saw comment suggesting to replace kiddy with donkey in rom hack
>wtf has this rom hack not been made yet?
>general why does 4chan hate original donkey Kong country
Why? There's a cheat code to only have Dixie the entire game.
>>2885669
Never mind, the TUFST code just removes dk barrels, it doesn't actually remove kiddie. When you start a new level both Kongs appear.
>>2885669
Not good enough i want diddy or donkey, Dixie and kiddie are inferior a and this needs ve bitched about on the internet
So I recently decided to get into the Saturn library, but the used one I bought doesn't read any discs. I tried a few simply tricks like adjusting the laser pot but I'm no hardware guy, so does /vr/ know a reliable place to get a working Saturn? Preferably a JP white one. Is there a place that sells refurbished Saturns?
Also, any tips on basic maintenance / upkeep to hold off the system's demise as long as possible?
I'm planning on using an Action Replay to play NA games on it as I come across them, but my Jap skills aren't too rusty
Just replace the laser. It is not difficult if you follow some online guides.
A new laser is cheap and will work for awhile...though not as long as a fully calibrated one.
>>2884212
Like I said, not a hardware guy. I don't want to solder and disassemble and all that jazz.
I'd just like to know where I can reliably buy a working model
>>2884337
Back to /v/ with you, sir.
I bought this videogame, /vr/. What am I in for?
>>2883498
But with less content.
>>2883503
Does it have all the challenges though?
>>2883498
How about you play the fucking game so you have something to comment on before making a thread dip shit?
Who else remembers Raiden? This game is just fuckin' awesome, even to this day.
>he's a shooter fag
JUST
>>2883462
It's pretty well known though.
What the hell happened to /vr/? Now it's like /v2/.
Hey guys, I found the one redeeming quality of the Phillips CDi... Its music!

holy shit that tetris music
>>2883235
>tetris' music
Damn, I've been miissing out.
One of the Zelda games overuses some instrument like crazy. I don't know the name of it but it makes the sound you get if you take a comb and drag all the tines along the corner of a desk, or if you wind an old-fashioned clock or toy really quickly.
Find a flaw.
>>2883085
Go back to /v/. Nobody post after this.
One interesting & underdiscussed aspect of FF2 is the decay of unused skills. Regarding flaws, however, there is the fact that stat gains don't take effect unless and until you unequip & re-equip equipment.
>>2883101
Why the hate?
>>2883085
The story is shit
Games you regret not playing as a child.
Pic related
I just recently started playing this. I remember always seeing it at the video store but always passing it up.
I would have LOVED it as a kid
nothing, played them all when i foundout about emulators
>>2883043
I remember going to Toy R Us on my 11th birthday to get StarTropics.
I'm interested in getting an original PlayStation for the first time, but there are about a million different versions of the system and its accessories. Which is the best one, and where should I start?
Also, I know the PS2 and PS3 can play PSOne games but I decided I want to get the actual system.
The original PSX models had a serial port that was intended to be used for add-ons, although I don't think Sony produced any first-party add-ons. Some versions of GameShark used the serial port, although later versions of GS were entirely disc-based and worked with all PS models.
The PSOne removed the serial port and also ditched the reset button to subvert even more space, so it's pretty small by comparison. The BIOS screen for the PSOne is also a bit different. The original PSX models had a colorful backdrop screen while the PSOne used a rather generic gray screen with intersecting lines, as pictured in my post.
In my opinion, it boils down to aesthetics. Unless you want to go hunting for an older serial port GameShark to use with your PlayStation, you really don't need to invest in a specific model for compatibility. All actual game software will work with all PlayStation models.
>>2883009
So a PSOne should be fine?
>>2882989
I just picked one up a while back. The bit of research I turned up is that if you're getting an original, big gray one, stay away from the earliest model, the SCPH-1001, I think. It was built with the disc lens far too close to the power source or somesuch and was doomed to failure, if not sooner, than later.
>>2883094
Yeah, these models are all a safe bet.
I've been on a sidescrolling action game kick recently, and I'm looking for suggestions.
So far i've played pick related, alien solider and a bunch of megaman/castlevania/metal slug games, and I need more high quality/speed action games like these.suggesting more modern ones would be nice too, if I've ran through the cream of the crop already[
>>2882885
>if I've ran through the cream of the crop already
You've played some popular mainstream games and now you think you know shit?
>>2882918
If I knew for sure I wouldn't be asking for suggestions in the first place.
>>2882885
Ninja Gaiden series (NES).
What would it have been like?
Super Disc, what's that? Another failed Sony-made format?
>>2882665
The SNES spinoff console that Sony was going to make.
It would have been a shitstorm of bootleg 128-in-1 SNES games on CDs made in China.
