I finished Earthbound few minutes ago.
Ask me anything.
Did you feel sadness when you met Gyiyg?
>>2887163
Is Giygas. And no, I felt weirdness.
>>2887169
It's Gyiyg.
Giegue/Gyigas are translation errors, like Pokey (porky).
So, I assume you didn't play Mother 1 before playing Earthbound.
How do you collect for systems with a high failure rate?
Say I want to get a Jaguar CD, or a PS2. How am I supposed to buy games for it, knowing that it could die at any time, through no fault of my own?
$$$ and backups.
If using these systems you should use a method that doesn't use optical discs.
For example, with the PS2 I use FreeMcboot to run Open PS Loader and play games from the IDE hard drive I installed in my PS2.
For Dreamcast and Saturn there are SD card loader options.
Unfortunately for Jaguar CD there isn't anything like that, probably for a good reason.
PS2's are cheap as fuck, buy a load of spare ones.
Why was the silent protagonist so popular in older games? I hate silent protagonists.
Voice acting is hard to put on a chip game.
harkens back to the wrpg idea of role playing, as in: playable characters are empty vessels for you to fill with life. never liked that. never liked it either when jrpgs were stuck with that concept.
Just play the game, who cares if the character speaks or not. I'd rather not, actually.
Does anyone here have one of these? I hear they are actually better than the official N64 controllers.
>>2886409
It looks awkward as fuck if you want to use the dpad.
>>2886502
They look awkward as fuck, period. I could get it being better if your hands were tiny
Mine are not.
>>2886409
I was able to use a friend's Hori pad once. Was really nice, but I can't justify spending $50+ on an N64 controller.
Trying to get into the shining force series. Any tips for a new player?
Just play it homie. Game's easy as fuck, but super comfy.
Gort is a beast
Treat Domingo with care, and he will dominate the field.
Be prepared to rage at the circus level, though...those mannequins(?) are dangerous as hell.
Should you promote people right away?
As a child, Secret of Evermore was my favorite video game. I also liked Secret of Mana, but not as much.
I'd like to make a (game that aims to be a) spiritual successor to Secret of Evermore. However, I know it wasn't perfect. In particular, SoE's lack of two-player capabilities is a significant enough flaw that's been rectified by at least one ROM hack that I know of.
So my questions to you are as follows:
1. What do you feel like SoE did better than SoM?
2. What did SoM do better than SoE?
3. What flaws did they both have?
4. What would you look for in a game that claimed to be a "spiritual successor" or even just an homage to Secret of Evermore? I don't claim my game will live up to that, but it's something to aim for.
Thanks for any help you can provide, /vr/.

>What do you feel like SoE did better than SoM?
I enjoyed the dark atmosphere much more.
>What did SoM do better than SoE?
I can't think of anything. Not saying its a bad game though. I love SoM, but there is nothing that really sets it apart, imo.
>What flaws did they both have?
Dumb partner A.I, at times. Though this didn't bother me that much, SoM seemed to be much worse.
>What would you look for in a game that claimed to be a "spiritual successor" or even just an homage to Secret of Evermore? I don't claim my game will live up to that, but it's something to aim for.
Just more of the same. Maybe touch up the hit detection. If its not broke, don't fix it.

have you checked the rebalance patch?

Would FF9 have been more popular if Zidane was a brooding grumpus like Cloud and Squall before him?
thisisbait.jpg
He would have been more popular if he wasn't a manlet monkey boy that wore a vest without a shirt underneath like vaan the fuccboi

get a load of this obnoxious faggot
"What the hell happened?" The thread
Didn't this game feature fighting game style command moves that weren't explained anywhere outside the manual? I didn't think it was that bad.
>>2885148
Sure you aren't thinking of this?
What is the most disturbing game released before 1999?
My vote goes to Harvester.
>>2884786
i never understood the appeal about harvester, what's the gist?
what in the fuck am i looking at
>>2884825
It's batshit insane hamfisted satire and at the same time was very much before its time in a lot of ways.
Starting with a quite well-known one.
The Darkstalkers series had some really cool and memorable stages.
>>2884534
This one fucks with my mind
>Pascal is the dog is here.
>>2883789
He looks familiar. Is that the wolf from Monster Rancher?

>Games age
Where does this meme come from?
Now that the dust has settled, my wife and I bought a Retron 5 to play GBA games on an LCD with a smoothing filter so we can see which games have aged poorly.
>Where does this meme come from?
>>2880095
Underages and people who can't accept that their tastes have changed so they blame the game instead.
Does /vr/ have any stories of funny and/or terrible bootleg games? Played this a few years ago and recently became curious of other's experiences.
I used to have (well, still have) a bootleg 40 in 1 gameboy cart that had every gen 1&2 Pokemon game on it, the Crystal version was inexplicably the infamous DRUG BAG FUCK Vietnamese Crystal version despite the other games being legit
It also had the Super Mario Land 4 game that's a hack of Crayon Shin-Chan and Pokemon-themed hacks of Super Mario Land and Pinball: Revenge of the Gator
>>2878703
I was in Marocco once and saw a bootleg pokemon game in one of the markets.
As I remember it the box was red with a Gyarados on it. I regret not buying it, but I guess it can be found online if anyone have an idea of what it could be called.
Buying GBA Pokemon games is a fucking crapshoot on ebay, although that isn't retro. I've gotten 3 fucking fake carts from US sellers.
Who /Strife/ here?
>>2873654
I've been meaning to play it for a while now. I probably will once I finish Duke3D Nuclear Winter.
I treated the game like it was just typical Doom, despite all of the changes, and went completely unprepared to the last boss.
Needless to say that when playing on a high difficulty level using the fully upgraded Sigil against the final boss WILL kill you unless you brought in healing items.
dat moment when you rebel thief and cannot correctly speak to that npc
>darker, grittier story.
>more spoopy levels means variety to gameplay.
>supernatural elements like in 'the sword' gave a more unique atmosphere over 'big mansion' levels.
>garret more of a snidey cynic than a bag of hokey one-liners.
>return to the cathedral
Why is Thief 2 so often cited as the best Thief?
>>2839452
Probably because more people would see that list just as much as a reason to dislike thief 1 over 2.
So there's more people out there who don't prefer varied levels and a more unique tone?
Thief 2 is great don't get me wrong, but it feels like the changes made larely weren't for the better. Bigger levels ushered away the tighter feel that many thief 1 maps had, and people point out zombies/burricks in the 1st as silly, while being perfectly content with aiming for portable boiler hatches on talking bipedal robbots with their water arrows.
