This is a thread for retro games you hated playing back in the day, but upon retrying them you find you enjoy them now.

For me it is Ocarina of Time. I couldn't get past how it looked like dogshit initially and felt so sluggish in movement. Now though I can appreciate the level of subtle details in the game as well as the fun dungeons.

Zelda 2. I first played it in 2004 shortly after playing a ton of Zelda 1 and loving it (on Animal Crossing GC, used Action Replay to unlock all of the NES games and proceeded to play those more than the actual game, it was what springboarded me into getting an NES a year later). Zelda 2 was really odd to me, and I didn't really understand the game at all.

It took until my 10th time (at least) trying the game to really get it, that was about October of 2012 or so. Finally beat it a few years later, and I can say it's one of my favorite Zeldas as well as one of my favorite NES games.

Diddy kong racing. I got my N64 + games used back around 98 or 99 or so, and that was one of the games I received, along with Turok 2, some sports shit, and extreme G.

I played DDR, but I never really appreciated it because I wanted to own those *real* N64 games like Mario Kart 64, Donkey Kong 64, Super Mario 64, Zelda OOT, etc. But looking back, it was a very fun and damn unique cart racer that IMO is better than MK64.

Always thought Turok 2 was baller as fuck though. Bewareoblivionisathand

Gotta be Dragon Warrior. That was babby's first RPG, and I tried so damn hard to love it as a kid, but it was nothing but endless frustration and annoyance for me. I remember being especially pissed off about having to go through menus just to open doors, and how frequent the battles were. Shit like that. I just didn't get how RPGs worked at the time, and didn't have the patience for them yet.

Years later, DW was the first game I ever emulated. It was definitely antiquated, but it was still enjoyable to just sit down and experience the game that really sparked off the popularity of a whole genre in motion. It's not one of my favorite games of all time or anything, but the feeling of going back and finishing something you couldn't as a kid can be a pretty great one.

Hey /vr/ are you better at retro games now than you were as kid? I feel people normally say they were better as kids (more time to practice, etc) but I've been playing some old games lately and I feel like I'm much better now. Maybe it's just due to all the practice I've had over 20+ years of gaming.

Is there a game that you didn't finish as a kid but easily beat now as an adult. Pic related.

Better than as a kid? Yeah.
Better than when I was 18? No.
>>
I'm way better in racing games than when I was a kid. Also in Street Fighter 2.

This. Getting older not only made me slower, but now I have giving carpal tunnel. And having more demands on my time as an adult means I don't get enough sleep anymore on top of that.

tfw You want to play Mario Kart Battle Mode and you're all alone and no friends want to come over...

An AI battle mode against the computer would have cheated it's ass off back then... probably a good thing they didn't include a 1P battle mode ever.

I suck at SMK so much. Though I've found recently that I'm really bad at all Mario Kart now, I don't know what happened. I have gone on to beat other racers instead since, like Diddy Kong Racing for example, but I didn't think it would be such a drastic switch away from that game to Mario Kart.

I got pretty terrible at MK64 too, for the record.

It's deceptive so you wouldn't think so right away, but Mario Kart really is one of those "Easy to learn, difficult to master" kind of games.

I've never played it but why would you want a bunch of dorks to tell you about how everything you were told to do in the game was wrong and only furthered the antagonist's plot to wreck buttholes
>>

Buttholes are prominently featured in the LBA games. Just thought I'd let you know, OP.

1 has annoying controls. It doesn't feel as responsive as 2 and you take damage and go through an annoying animation every time you run into a wall.

2 has much better controls and much bigger open environments giving a real sense of exploration. Both are worth playing but 2 is better.

Anyone able to explain to me how the Satellaview worked?

Were games only available to play during the specific broadcast times?

Or were they downloaded to a cartridge/storage space, so they could be played at any other time? Similar to digital games today?

>Were games only available to play during the specific broadcast times?

Pretty much that. I think the data was still stored on the cart though which is how we could extract it. Also there were voices guiding you during the time limit to make it more immersive/cinematic. I'm sure it was actually a pretty unique experience. They ended up "re-airing" the game a couple of times to give people another chance to play it.

How come Sega stuff isn't that collectible and the prices didn't go up that high (except for maybe Saturn)

How come portable games never go up that high in price either?
116 posts and 15 images submitted.
>>
Sega isn't Nintendo but at the same time isn't rare

Portable games and consoles are always loose and beat to shit. New and like new+complete examples are collectible there's just never much shortage of rough condition stuff cheap.

Frequently the rarest portable games are undesireable i.e. not at all fun. lolcamecom wtf? Ngage is even a neat little flash of a transitional platform but little collectibility so far.

Because sega doesn't have an army of artuists skyrocketing pack in games like Mario World to the $20 range.

Getting back into emulation, and curious as to what your hidden gems of games are for the SNES.

I'm not talking about Chrono Trigger, FF2 and 3, Legend of Zelda LTTP, games everyone has.

I'm looking for hidden Jew gold of games. Games that kicked some ass, but I was never able to get ahold of.

I just saw this cocktail Space Duel on my CraIgslist and it's so special and rare I had to share it even though the guy is some "I know what I got" Boomer.

Pretty much everybody on Craigslist seems totally insane with their far above eBay prices bit I've met this particular guy and he has a whole warehouse full of arcade stuff and he'll probably die there without selling much. I guess I should preemptively get friendly with his likely inheritors

Is this game actually quite hard or am I just shit at it?

I find myself having to take on one group of enemies at a time, then run back to find somewhere to rest or go back to temple to cure disease/poison.

>I find myself having to take on one group of enemies at a time, then run back to find somewhere to rest or go back to temple to cure disease/poison.
Yeah, that's how it starts. It will be a while until you have some real firepower.

PROTIP: Take advantage of being able to dodge arrows and shit in real-time and kite enemies while shooting at them.

Anyone like the Disciples games? Are they better or worse than HoM&M?
6 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
I like the first one I played the shit out of it and beat a bunch of the campaigns. I wouldn't even really compare it to HoM&M either it's its own game and is good for being a variation on heroes. I liked leveling up my characters and the roleplaying aspects of it.

I just wrote a really long post about Disciples but before sending it my pc died so fuck it.

I played the second one. When I bought it it was on the elf-themed expansion, I think. But I didn't play the expansion content anyway so that isn't too important.

It was a fun enough game. The in-battle sprites were really nice. I played through the undead campaign and found it to be a normal turn-based strategy game, meaning that it was fun but almost always either too easy (because the AI was extremely stupid) or too hard (because I became lax and didn't make a serious enough effort to win). I had exactly one truly challenging battle in that campaign. I had managed to randomly save my game in a position where I HAD to beat a particular enemy group, but I was only juuuust barely strong enough to do it, and only if I used just the right sequence of moves at that. That was a really fun puzzle.

Otherwise, just a normal strategy game, for better or for worse. Worth playing if you like that sort of thing.

I haven't played HoMM.

There is tons of level on workshop if u have steam version + you get mods like dn3d beach and l.a etc..
>>
Yeah the support for the game is really good. And for good reason.
>>
>>2805070
The workshop is a good start, and it's good to bring a renew popularity to the game and some usermaps, but in terms of quality and quantity of user created content for the game it barely scratches the surface.
I did upload quite a lot of maps there myself (mine and some of my friends or fav maps) but tons of people never bothered to upload their maps there, and also tons of maps and mods aren't compatible with Megaton anyway.

What is your opinion on Solar Jetman?

It's a pretty unique game in the NES library.

Physics-based 360 degree movement. Big open levels with various degree of gravity. Pretty cool.

That last level/boss when it suddenly turned into a side scrolling shooter was awful though.

Is there any way to play a 32x on a 16-bit Sega Genesis? I recently went to a Disk Replay store and saw Doom for $3.55, but the clerk was kind enough to inform me I had to have some sort of thing that would connect into my Sega that would allow this. It sounded cryptic at the time and I possibly am misremembering what he said, so I came to you guys wondering what kind of hardware he might have meant.

I'm not a lazy ass kid so I did my own research into it and did indeed find that there are more kinds of Sega Genesi than just the 16-bit one, but I wasn't able to find any kind of hardware that would connect into my Genesis that would allow a 32x cartridge to plug in on top of it (like a Game Genie). Does such a hardware piece exist or did the clerk mean I had to have a 32-bit Sega Genesis with a 32x compatible piece? Whenever I search "Sega 32x adapter" I am getting nothing... if there is a more specific name I'm sure that would help. And yes I know Doom was for the N64 as well, but I can't find a decently priced copy anywhere...

Final question, if such a hardware component DID exist... how would a Game Genie work in that? The hardware piece, Game Genie, then 32x game on top, or Game Genie, hardware piece, then 32x game on top?
