Are youtubers bad or good for retro vidya?
>>2921454
Who cares.
Stop flooding /vr/ with off-topic threads.
Post comments about actual retro games.

Well, in one hand they can give games more exposition. On the other hand, some of their opinions get treated as gospel, making a whole audience to not bother to try a game.

Good for reseller jews
Bad for collectorfags
are there fundamentals to shmups like there are fundamentals to fighting games ?
or does it just come down to memory
i suck at shmups and i want to get better, still enjoying them though.
some of the basics are discussed here
http://www.sega-16.com/2005/04/unofficial-shmups-glossary/
honestly though this genre is completely devoid of skill
its pretty simple man
just go where the bullets aren't
Despite what anyone else may tell you, it's largely rote memorization. Not all shoot-'em-ups have the same design principles, though. Some series have more realistic difficulty curves than others, but series like Gradius? Entirely rote memorization. Konami series in general are notorious for that.
As someone who doesn't know a lot about fighting games, what is the difference between mainline Street Fighter and the Alpha series? Ostensibly they look pretty much the same to me. What makes it so different to warrant being an entire spin-off series? It just seems so weird to me that a company would release a spin-off game that plays pretty much the same as its main titles.

Basically, every Street Fighter is it's own series. That's why there's like 8 versions of SF2, 3- of SF3 and what now? 4-5 of SF4? SFA was originally "Street Fighter Zero" in Japan, and took place in between FS and SF2 (if I'm not mistaken), bridged the gap between the two plot wise, and became it's own series. And, much like every other SF game, each new entry effectively replaces the former versions.
Granted, SFA is a little different, because it uses a numbering standard, rather than "Super", "Hyper", "tournament edition" and etc. And SFA3 is seen as a totally separate set of events from SFA and SFA2 (which are not). But it generally follows all of the standards of the entire SF series. It was born as one game, and became a series unto itself.
I could never get into SF2 even though I started gaming on the SNES, bu somehow Alpha 2 with the anime style really got me.
When games got the anime bug all throughout the 90's, it was glorious.

What's the most graphically impressive Genesis game?
...and how does it compare to the best looking SNES game?
Everything looks better on the Genesis, thanks to it's infamous blast processing.
Virtua Racing.
The cart had a built-in Blast Processor though. You could play it on a SNES and it would still be fast.
> I don't emulate, I use ORIGINAL hardware
> I can tell the difference!!!

>what in input lag
>what is sound slow down / issues
>can it run crysis
Who fucking cares. I like Bimini Run.
>>2914982
You do realize that the vast differences in speed between that hardware and modern hardware renders such input lag virtually non-existent on modern computers while emulating?
Like, there's LESS input lag and modern emulators like Higan add input lag to more accurately emulate the weaknesses of the machines the games were made for.
>TL;DR you're wrong and listen to me-me's created by people who think they understand emulation.
>>2914947
I can pick out PS2 emulators, but that's about it. And obviously if they're not configured for accuracy, I'll notice. N64 doesn't have Anti-Aliasing.
Super Mario Bros. 3 is a seemingly innocuous platformer game. In reality, it's a biting allegory of Man's relationship with God.
World 1 is Grass Land. It's an idyllic, easygoing place in an obvious reference to the biblical Paradise.
World 2 is Desert Land. It represents the original sin and exile from paradise, and the hardships endured by man.
World 3 is Water Land, an obvious allegory to the great biblical flood that purged the wicked but allowed the faithful to survive.
World 4 is Giant Land. Mario must face and defeat his giant adversaries, in a vein similar to story of David and Goliath.
World 5 is Sky Land. The first half is actually on earth, and after climbing a tower, Mario finds himself on the cloud tops, where he must make his way to the castle and the King of the heavens (God?). There is debate as to what this world is exactly representing. The duality of heaven and earth might represent how the spiritual awakening of man allows him to live together with God in daily life, as the connecting tower can be climbed up or down at any time. The earthen half could also be a mirrored Israel, and the tower Jerusalem, or the Tower of Babel.
World 6 is Ice Land. It is the site of Ragnarök, or Götterdämmerung; the Twilight of the Gods. It represents the "death" of God as Nietzche put it: man has grew proud and become "enlightened", and no longer bases his morality on the divine, whether for ill or good.
World 7 is Pipe Land, and it represents our world. It consists of six main landmasses, and a large, uninhabited "continent" at the bottom. This land is fragmented, but interconnected, as you can get everywhere with the various bridges and pipes. It represents the first stage of Man separated from God, the building of his empire.
World 8 is Dark Land. It's a gloomy, hellish realm of dark skies and filthy waters. Tanks roll over the ruined countryside and nuclear ash blots out the sun. It represents the downfall of Man separated from God.

Somewhere out there someone likes the way that looks. My brain is imploding.

My theory about Bowser being gay and desperately seeking attention from Mario is better.
Hey /vr/ I just got a Model 1 Megadrive today and could use some help.. So I plug everything in where it should be and scan channels. It finds 36 but when I go to play a game all I get is a black screen with a Sega Enterprises message on it and then just a black screen, The quality of the writing that comes on screen doesn't look to sharp either.. Can someone isolate the problem? So far I think it could be the RV cable but I cant be too sure since I haven't had one of these in over a decade..
Using Sharp HDTV and console is plugged into Ariel socket
IIRC the "Licensed by Sega" thing only comes up if the system detects a cartridge in the slot. If no image or sound comes up afterward it's probably either a bad connection between the cartridge and the slot or the cartridge itself is borked.

>scan channels

Stop.

Many thanks, I have ordered an AV cable to get around the problem, hope this works!

What are your favourite soundtracks, /vr/? Most emotional, most atmospheric, most badass, you name it.
For me my favourite ost of all time has to be pic related on the Saturn, not the genesis. Mediocre gameplay, but the soundtrack makes the game completely worth playing, in my opinion.
>>2925301
Genesis version has better OST imo.
Favorite OSTs: Outrun 2 coast 2 coast (I know it's not retro, but kinda related), Deus Ex, Sega Rally, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Snatcher
>>2925304
Is this a NiGHTS ripoff?
I haven't done a playthrough as Brujah or Gangrel yet. Is it worth it?
sure frend

Oh, the other Vampire game. That exists.

Just go max humanity for sappy ending, anon. And remember the enemy resurrection grind technique.
WHERE IS ANEZKA!?
Do you consider any fifth generation video games genuinely beautiful?
A lot of them.
Nights and Burning rangers have a very nice style.
Tron Bonne, Spyro, Crash, etc
OoT, MM, or Mario 64.
Yes. If you account for what they managed to achieve with their polygon and texture limitations, they get even more beautiful, and can appreciated a lot more than the HD remakes

Any?
It was crazy time. What used to be drawn, almost everything went pre-rendered. I don't like this time, but it's history now, we aren't going to see those CGIs once more.
Chrono Cross Anyone? Lovely story as well as a 10/10 soundtrack.
The story was a convoluted mess, and the translation didn't help any. The soundtrack was fairly good, and had some great ambient and orchestral themes. The game has a lot of rough edges, but I nonetheless liked it, and still replay it from time to time.
The setting had a great atmosphere, but a lot of the cast felt really out of place. Most of the recruitable characters were walking stereotypes with cheesy accents, and they embodied cultures that don't even exist in the Chrono Trigger / Chrono Cross world. French clowns? Greek wrestlers? Goth dudes? Lolitas? Just where did all these wacky characters come from? CT's world was much more homogenous than that.
I don't understand why people like Cross's OST. It is generic as hell. Trigger, in my opinion, had much better music.
>>2920971
>the translation didn't help any
The translation was faithful, overseen by the writer, and made the story ten times more understandable and coherent than the Japanese script.
Resident Evil 2 for N64 is awesome. The new C and D control profiles make the game so much more enjoyable.
>N64 version of anything being the best one
The only good thing about the N64 version is the item randomizer mode.

Why is this game treated like it was brought down from the heavens. I recently played this game for 5 hours and i hated it. I just can't see the hype behind this game.
You just hate games.
>>2915196
I love games. I tried to love this game, but i just couldn't. Hated the combat and the puzzles. I did however think the story was decent.
Same happened to me with other sacred cows like Half-Life.
The game is just not for you OP, you don't need to like every single popular or acclaimed game, once you learn that and accept it, you will get angry less often and make less shitty threads like this.
Alright, fuck it. I've been stuck on where to use the bottomless pot for about 4 days now. I talked to the horse and he said to use it in the shallows to the west and it still won't work when I use it in what I assume is the area he's talking about. Can someone point me in the right direction?
As a side note the game has been a lot more fun than the original and II
If you dick around the ocean between the two big continents you'll come across a big pile of rocks that looks like pic related. Use it there. It should be just about directly south of the tiny strait where the two landmasses almost meet.
